Book excerpt: This volume describes engineering methods for the prediction of the aerodynamic and stability and control characteristics of STOL aircraft employing internally ducted jet flaps, externally blown jet flaps, and mechanical flap systems with vectored thrust. These methods are intended to be used in conjunction with the theoretical methods and the associated computer program (STOL Aerodynamic Methods Computer Program) discussed in Volumes I and II, respectively. These engineering methods are intended to provide a rational approach for the aerodynamic analysis of complete STOL aircraft configurations and to provide semi-empirical methods to account for those effects not treated by the theoretical methods. These methods have been applied to configurations representative of each of the powered high-lift concepts, and the results of these analyses have been presented along with available experimental data to indicate the validity and range of applicability of the methods.

Book excerpt: The report describes the STOL Aerodynamic Methods Computer Program, which is intended to aid the engineer in the design and analysis of STOL aircraft employing internally ducted jet flaps, externally blown jet flaps, and mechanical flap systems with vectored thrust. The program provides capabilities to predict either the overall aerodynamic characteristics of a configuration or the aerodynamics of the following: Jet-wing (in or out of ground effect); wing and vectored jets; fuselage in the flow field of the jet-wing and/or vectored jets; empennage in the flow field of the jet-wing and/or vectored jets. The program includes the capabilities for investigating the effects of arbitray wing planforms with arbitrary high lift systems, including partial span flaps, slats, and jets; arbitrary camber, twist, and jet deflection; fuselages with arbitrary cross-sections and upsweep; arbitrary empennage arrangements, including conventional tails, mid-tails, and T-tails; and a capability to calculate the off-body flow field induced by the jet-wing and/or vectored at arbitrary points.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of the study has been the development of a unified set of analytical methods which would provide the capability to calculate the stability and control characteristics of an arbitrary STOL aircraft configuration that might employ the internally ducted jet flap, externally blown jet flap, or a mechanical high lift system with vectored thrust. This volume presents the complete theoretical development of the relevant analytical methods. In addition, it presents comparisons of these methods with other analytical solutions and with experimental data.

Book excerpt: An experimental evaluation of analytical techniques for predicting certain stability and control characteristics of a large flexible aircraft is presented. Analytical methods based on both the model approach and flexibility influence coefficients are developed to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a flexible airplane. These methods are then applied to a flexibly scaled model of a supersonic transport configuration. Comparisons of wind-tunnel data, calculations based on the model approach, and flexibility influence coefficients are presented over the Mach number range from 0.6 to 2.7. An examination of the results obtained from this study indicates that both analytical techniques predict reasonably well the effect of flexibility on the basic longitudinal characteristics and that both techniques give generally comparable results.

Book excerpt: Analytical engineering methods are developed for use in predicting the static and dynamic stability and control derivatives and force and moment coefficients of lift-jet, lift-fan, and vectored thrust V/STOL aircraft in the hover and transition flight regimes. The methods take into account the strong power effects, large variations in angle of attack and sideslip, and changes in aircraft geometry that are associated with high disk loaded V/STOL aircraft operating in the aforementioned flight regimes. The theoretical development of the prediction methods is presented in this volume.
