Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodism and Literature: A Series of Articles From Several Writers on the Literary Enterprise and Achievements of the Methodist Episcopal Church This book is believed to be a demand of the times, and especially in the denomination whence it emanates. Among the numerous agencies which Methodism has employed in her evangelizing labors, none has been more potent than the printing-press. This instrumentality was early recognized by the founders of the Church, who wisely took measures for its growth and perpetuity, and builded better than they knew. With them a prime object was to create and foster a taste for reading, and to regulate the cost of literature, so that it might be brought within the reach of the great masses to whom they preached. Methbdism was, indeed, 'the pioneer of cheap religious reading, organizing a system of col portage before the term colporteur had been engrafted upon our Saxon stock. Time, far from obliterating its memory, serves only to emphasize more clearly neglected aspects and accentuate main features. No evangel can live if cut from its roots. It is wise, therefore, to recall that early Methodist faith and practice were rooted and grounded in a rich cultural and devotional tradition.” — From the preface

This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-Century Women's Writing and the Methodist Media Revolution argues that Methodism in the eighteenth century was a media event that uniquely combined and utilized different types of media to reach a vast and diverse audience. Specifically, it traces particular cases of how evangelical and Methodist discourse practices interacted with major cultural and literary events during the long eighteenth century, from the rise of the novel through the Revolution controversy of the 1790s to the shifting ground for women writers leading up to the Reform era in the 1830s. The book maps the religious discourse patterns of Methodism onto works by authors like Samuel Richardson, Mary Wollstonecraft, Hannah More, Elizabeth Hamilton, Mary Tighe, and Felicia Hemans. This provides not only a better sense of the religious nuances of these authors' better-known works, but also a fuller consideration of the wide variety of genres in which women were writing during the period, many of which continue to be read as 'non-literary'. The scope of the book leads the reader from the establishment of evangelical forms of discourse in the 1730s to the natural ends of these discourse structures during the era of reform, all the while pointing to ways in which women - Methodist and otherwise - modified these discourse patterns as acts of resistance or subversion.

Download or read book Methodism and the Rise of Popular Literary Criticism written by Brett McInelly and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Methodism and popular review criticism intersected with and informed each other in the eighteenth century. Methodism emerged at a time when the idea of a ‘public square’ was taking shape, a process facilitated by the periodical press. Perhaps more so than any previous religious movement, Methodism, and the publications associated with it, received greater scrutiny largely because of periodical literature and the emergence of popular review criticism. The book considers in particular how works addressing Methodism were discussed and critiqued in the era’s two leading literary periodicals – The Monthly Review and The Critical Review. Focusing on the period between 1749 and 1789, the study encompasses the formative years of popular review criticism and some of the more dramatic moments in the textual culture of early Methodism. The author illustrates some of the specific ways these review journals diverged in their critical approaches and sensibilities as well as their politics and religious opinions. The Monthly’s and the Critical’s responses to the Methodists’ own publishing efforts as well as the anti-Methodist critique are shown to be both multifaceted and complex. The book critically reflects on the pretended neutrality, reasonableness, and objectivity of reviewers, who at times found themselves negotiating between the desire to regulate literary tastes and the impulse to undermine the Methodist revival. It will be relevant to scholars of religion, history and literary studies with an interest in Methodism, print culture, and the eighteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Developments in Methodism The title of this book may be construed in two different ways. It may be taken as having to do with the evangelistic, rather than the ecclesiastical, side of Methodism, and particularly with the organisations and movements which have been started in recent years; or, it may be taken as having reference to the origin, the polity, and the history of the various Methodist bodies. The former interpretation has not been left entirely out of view. It has been considered, wherever convenient, in most of the chapters, and it has occupied the whole of the chapter on "Methodism As It Is."
