Book excerpt: Wood is formed in an essentially water-saturated environment in the living tree, and the cell wall remains in this state until the water flow from the roots is interrupted, such as by felling the tree. The wood then begins to lose most of its moisture by drying, resulting in changes in most of its physical properties. These changes, and their relationship to the environment to which the wood is subsequently ex posed, are the subject of this book. The text consists of six chapters. The first chapter discusses cer tain empirical relationships between wood and water, methods of measuring wood moisture content, factors which affect its equilib rium moisture content, and the effect of moisture content on wood strength. The second chapter treats the thermodynamics of moisture sorption by wood, inc1uding enthalpy, entropy, and free energy changes. The third chapter discusses some of the theories which have been proposed to explain the sorption isotherms for hygroscopic ma terials such as wood. Chapter 4 considers hygroexpansion or the shrinking and swelling of wood associated with moisture change. Chapter 5 is concerned with how moisture moves through the cell wall of wood in response to both moisture and temperature gradients. The sixth and final chapter discusses the theoretical and practical aspects of the electrical resistance and dielectric properties of wood, in c1uding the principles involved in their application in electrical moisture meters.

Book excerpt: Dimensional movement with changing moisture content is among the main performance characteristics of wood flooring. The U.S. wood flooring industry has relied on values and equations published by the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in its Wood Handbook to provide critical information about how different woods move. This paper discusses key information previously published by FPL relating to dimensional change coefficients (DCCs) and includes laboratory measurements of board width over a range of moisture contents for four types of prefinished commercial solid wood flooring: hickory, red oak, Acacia cf. confusa, and Acacia cf. mangium. Floorboards were initially conditioned to equilibrium at 80% relative humidity (RH), remanufactured to new target widths, and installed on subflooring assemblies according to industry guidelines. The assemblies were subsequently equilibrated at 30% RH and then again at 80% RH. Time-lapse videos are provided for each wood type, showing shrinkage and swelling with changing moisture content (MC) at two image magnifications. DCCs for installed floorboards were calculated based on measured widths and MCs at the two conditions. In addition, DCCs for uninstalled floorboards of the woods in this study were experimentally determined across a range of moisture conditions using two different calculation methods. Comparison of experimentally determined DCCs for uninstalled and installed floorboards indicates that there is no practical installation constraint on shrinkage of installed floorboards. No practical difference in DCC was found between tongue-and-groove floorboards and matched boards cut to a rectangular profile. Experimentally determined DCCs for hickory and red oak are within a reasonable range of Wood Handbook values, and we report the first published DCC values for the two Acacia. Reporting DCCs to two significant figures (rather than three) is recommended given the variability underlying the DCCs in the Wood Handbook and the variability in DCCs experimentally observed in this work. Practical methods for determining DCCs are discussed for species lacking published data. Incorporating variability in width measurement, MC, and DCC value in the calculation of moisture content at the time of manufacture results in a range of initial MCs that spans the actual MC, whereas using single, average values does not accurately predict the initial MC in three of four cases.

Today we are in a position to apply the title "wood science" to the field of wood technology that is based on scientific investigation, theoretical as well as experimental. It is this research that fosters new uses for wood as a raw material and that creates the foundation for new industries for the manufacture of wood-base materials such as plywood, laminated products, particle and fiber board and sand wich construction. Wood technology in its broadest sense combines the disciplines of wood anatomy, biology, chemistry, physics and mechanical technology. It is through this interdisciplinary approach that progress has been made in wood seasoning, wood preservation methods, wood machining, surfacing and gluing, and in the many other processes applied in its utilization. In 1936 the senior author published a book entitled, "Technologie des Holzes", which was a first approach to a universal reference book on wood technology. The first edition of Volume I of the Textbook of Wood Technology, co-authored by H. P. BROWN, A. J. P AN SHIN , and C. C. FORSAITH, was published in 1948. An indication of the rapid development of this field can be gained from the fact that the second edition of "Technologie des Holzes und der Holzwerkstoffe", completely revised, was needed by 1951. It contains 2233 pages compared with the 764 pages of the 1936 edition.
