A method of calculating the changes in the ideal angle of attack, the angle of zero lift, and the design lift coefficient of a propeller blade section having a trailing-edge extension flap was utilized to calculate the performance of a six-blade dual-rotating propeller with extension flaps varying up to 40 percent chord. The method was used to determine the angle that the flap extension must make with the chord in order to obtain a particular load distribution. Although the analysis in this report was made for a wind-tunnel propeller designed to operate at low advance-diameter ration, the method is directly applicable to any propeller section under any operating condition.

The efficiency is determined for any design condition by evaluating separately from charts the induced losses and the profile-drag losses. The estimated efficiency is compared with experimental results for a wide range of operating conditions and found to be in agreement near peak efficiency. The present analysis covers single-rotating propellers of two, three, four, six, and eight blades and includes charts showing the rotational-energy loss for the given operating condition in order to assist in estimating the gain in efficiency for dual-rotating propellers. The change in efficiency to be expected from body interference is discussed. Two examples illustrating the use of the method are given in an appendix.

The application of this theory to either performance or design calculations of dual-rotating propellers is found to involve a modification to the value of the mass coefficient, which is shown to be affected by the ratio of the spinner radius to the propeller radius. The effect is very important and, since it has not been considered in previous work on this subject, the required modification and the method of application is explained in the present paper.
