Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theareaofgraphtransformationoriginatedinthelate1960sunderthename “graph grammars” – the main motivation came from practical considerations concerning pattern recognition and compiler construction. Since then, the list of areas which have interacted with the development of graph transformation has grown impressively. The areas include: software speci?cation and development, VLSI layout schemes, database design, modeling of concurrent systems, m- sively parallel computer architectures, logic programming, computer animation, developmentalbiology,musiccomposition,distributedsystems,speci?cationl- guages, software and web engineering, and visual languages. As a matter of fact, graph transformation is now accepted as a fundamental computation paradigm where computation includes speci?cation, programming, and implementation. Over the last three decades the area of graph transfor- tion has developed at a steady pace into a theoretically attractive research ?eld, important for applications. Thisvolume consistsofpapersselectedfromcontributionsto the Sixth Int- national Workshop on Theory and Applications of Graph Transformation that took place in Paderborn, Germany, November 16-20, 1998. The papers und- went an additional refereeing process which yielded 33 papers presented here (out of 55 papers presented at the workshop). This collection of papers provides a very broad snapshot of the state of the art of the whole ?eld today. They are grouped into nine sections representing most active research areas. Theworkshopwasthe sixth in a seriesof internationalworkshopswhich take place every four years. Previous workshops were called “Graph Grammars and Their Application to Computer Science”. Book Synopsis Multiple Representations in Chemical Education by : John K. Gilbert
Download or read book Multiple Representations in Chemical Education written by John K. Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry seeks to provide qualitative and quantitative explanations for the observed behaviour of elements and their compounds. Doing so involves making use of three types of representation: the macro (the empirical properties of substances); the sub-micro (the natures of the entities giving rise to those properties); and the symbolic (the number of entities involved in any changes that take place). Although understanding this triplet relationship is a key aspect of chemical education, there is considerable evidence that students find great difficulty in achieving mastery of the ideas involved. In bringing together the work of leading chemistry educators who are researching the triplet relationship at the secondary and university levels, the book discusses the learning involved, the problems that students encounter, and successful approaches to teaching. Based on the reported research, the editors argue for a coherent model for understanding the triplet relationship in chemical education.
Book Synopsis The Language of Images by : Maria Giulia Dondero
Download or read book The Language of Images written by Maria Giulia Dondero and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with two fundamental issues in the semiotics of the image. The first is the relationship between image and observer: how does one look at an image? To answer this question, this book sets out to transpose the theory of enunciation formulated in linguistics over to the visual field. It also aims to clarify the gains made in contemporary visual semiotics relative to the semiology of Roland Barthes and Emile Benveniste. The second issue addressed is the relation between the forces, forms and materiality of the images. How do different physical mediums (pictorial, photographic and digital) influence visual forms? How does materiality affect the generativity of forms? On the forces within the images, the book addresses the philosophical thought of Gilles Deleuze and René Thom as well as the experiment of Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne. The theories discussed in the book are tested on a variety of corpora for analysis, including both paintings and photographs, taken from traditional as well as contemporary sources in a variety of social sectors (arts and sciences). Finally, semiotic methodology is contrasted with the computational analysis of large collections of images (Big Data), such as the “Media Visualization” analyses proposed by Lev Manovich and Cultural Analytics in the field of Computer Science to evaluate the impact of automatic analysis of visual forms on Digital Art History and more generally on the image sciences.
Download or read book Spatial Computing written by Terry Caelli and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a special workshop on Spatial Computing which brought together experts in computer vision, visualization, multimedia and geographic information systems to discuss common problems and applications. The common theme of the workshop was the need to integrate human perception and domain knowledge with developing representations and solutions to problems which necessarily involve the interpretation of sensed data. The overwhelming conclusion was that these different areas of spatial computing should be communicating more than is done at present and that such workshops and publications would help this process.
Book Synopsis Artists and Patrons in Post-war Britain by : Courtauld Institute of Art
Download or read book Artists and Patrons in Post-war Britain written by Courtauld Institute of Art and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An examination of art and patronage in Britain during the post-war years. It consists of five case studies, initially written as MA theses, that closely investigate aspects of the mechanisms of patronage outside the state institutions, while indicating structural links within it. The writers have sought to elucidate the relationship between patronage, the production of art and its dissemination. Without seeking to provide an inclusive account of patronage or art production in the early post-war years, their disparate and highly selective papers set up models for the structure of patronage under specific historical conditions. They assume an understanding that works of art are embedded in their social contexts, are products of the conditions under which they were produced, and that these contexts and conditions are complex, fluid and imbricated in one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a unique collaborative effort to bring together the multiple aspects of the semiotics of images into a coherent approach based on Greimasian and post-Greimasian theory. Starting with a critical discussion of epistemological and theoretical issues and continuing with methodology and numerous examples of applied analysis, it aims to provide the educated reader with a consistent and unified theoretical framework for the semiotic study of visual cultural texts. It offers a comprehensive overview of the semiotics of static images such as painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, but also dynamic images such as cinema, animation and digital games. Readers will benefit from the special emphasis placed on the analysis of the pictorial signifier, visual syntax and the structuring of the semantic universe.

Functional Grammar as understood in the ICFGs and in this volume is the linguistic model as proposed by Simon Dik, and to date most extensively described and discussed in Dik (1989). The indebtedness of the FG-community to Simon Dik, who died six months after the conference was held, is great indeed. The editors hope that this volume is a fitting tribute to his work.
Book Synopsis Science Teachers’ Use of Visual Representations by : Billie Eilam
Download or read book Science Teachers’ Use of Visual Representations written by Billie Eilam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the diverse use of visual representations by teachers in the science classroom. It contains unique pedagogies related to the use of visualization, presents original curriculum materials as well as explores future possibilities. The book begins by looking at the significance of visual representations in the teaching of science. It then goes on to detail two recent innovations in the field: simulations and slowmation, a process of explicit visualization. It also evaluates the way teachers have used different diagrams to illustrate concepts in biology and chemistry. Next, the book explores the use of visual representations in culturally diverse classrooms, including the implication of culture for teachers’ use of representations, the crucial importance of language in the design and use of visualizations and visualizations in popular books about chemistry. It also shows the place of visualizations in the growing use of informal, self-directed science education. Overall, the book concludes that if the potential of visualizations in science education is to be realized in the future, the subject must be included in both pre-service and in-service teacher education. It explores ways to develop science teachers’ representational competence and details the impact that this will have on their teaching. The worldwide trend towards providing science education for all, coupled with the increased availability of color printing, access to personal computers and projection facilities, has lead to a more extensive and diverse use of visual representations in the classroom. This book offers unique insights into the relationship between visual representations and science education, making it an ideal resource for educators as well as researchers in science education, visualization and pedagogy.
