Book excerpt: This memorandum deals with the metallurgy and properties of thoria-strengthened nickel, a material which shows promise as a structural metal for use in the temperature range of 1900 to 2400 F where the present nickel- and cobalt-base superalloys lose most of their useful strength. Discussed in the memorandum are methods of producing dispersions in metals, and the processing variables involved in making dispersion-strengthened nickel. An entire section on the mechanical properties of thoria-strengthened nickel is included. Given in this section are tensile, creep-rupture, shear, and fatigue properties, as well as the effect of various thermal and mechanical treatments on the material. Physical-property data comprise one section of the memorandum, and oxidation resistance another. In a section on joining the following joining processes are discussed: resistance welding, flash welding, brazing, diffusion bonding by hot pressing, electron-beam welding, fusion welding, and others. In the last section of the memorandum the author presents an outlook for future developments of dispersion-strengthened nickel. (Author).

Thick plate of Ti continues to be of interest to the aerospace and defense industries for possible use in submersibles, armored vehicles, large space boosters, high-speed aircraft, and for pressure vessels. This memorandum generally is limited to information on welding Ti plate that is (1) at least 1 in. thick and (2) that is not covered by DMIC Report 185, The Status and Properties of Titanium Alloys for Thick Plate, June 14, 1963. The general requirements for welding Ti are not repeated here, since they are well documented in references mentioned in the inroduction to the memorandum. Sections have been prepared to cover material developments, welding-process developments, weld properties, and residual welding stresses. (Author).

This cooperation was demonstrated not only at the 1966 Cryogenic Engineering Conference but also at the International Institute of Refrigeration, Commission I Meeting, which was also hosted by these two organizations immediately following the Cryogenic Engineering Conference. These two meetings have provided attendees with one of the most comprehensive coverages of cryogenic topics that has ever been presented at one location. Emphasis on major international advances in helium technology at the International Institute of Refrigeration, Commission I Meeting has been possible largely through the National Science Foundation Grant GK 1116 to the University of Colorado. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee gratefully acknowledges this support because of its valuable international contribution to the Cryogenic Engineering Conference.
