Book excerpt: Annotation Kaufman prevents this summary of data on the fracture characteristics of aluminum alloys, broadly based on a publication by Alcoa in 1964, Fracture Characteristics of Aluminum Alloys. Coverage includes tensile properties as indicators of fracture behavior; notched-bar impact and related tests for toughness; notch toughness and sensitivity; tear resistance; fracture toughness; the interrelation of fracture characteristics; toughness at subzero and elevated temperatures; subcritical crack growth; and metallurgical considerations in fracture resistance. Most of the data is presented in only the English/engineering units, contrary to normal ASM International and Aluminum Association, Inc. policies. The author's credentials are not stated. c. Book excerpt: The report includes fracture toughness studies on some new titanium alloys as well as results of an initial feasibility study aimed at raising the optimum strength and toughness limits for titanium alloys through an approach involving thick section composites. The results of salt water stress-corrosion- cracking studies on a number of titanium alloys are described including a study concerning the effect of vacuum heat treatment on stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of titanium alloys. Fatigue crack propagation studies in air and in salt water on the pressure vessel steels A302B, A201B, and A517F are discussed; and the results compared to the actual service performance of these same materials in PVRC program studies. Preliminary fracture toughness correlation diagrams are presented for high strength steels based upon fracture mechanics and engineering test methods. The latest versions of the Fracture Toughness Index Diagrams for steels, titanium alloys and aluminum alloys, a usual feature of this report series and which are based upon engineering test methods, are presented and the significance of the features briefly discussed. Fracture toughness studies on thick plates of 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V, and a 'new' 9Ni-4Co steel are reported. In addition, the results are presented for similar studies on welds of 2Mn-2Ni in 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels and welds of 9Ni-4Co, 12Ni-3Cr-3Mo and 17Ni- 2Co-3Mo compositions.

Book excerpt: A relationship between the stress concentration factor and the fracture toughness parameter was examined for the case of an elliptical hole in an infinite solid. Edge-notched specimens from three high-strength aluminum alloys were tensile loaded to failure. The resulting data from these tests were analyzed, using this relationship. It was indicated that the predicted proportionality between the fracture toughness parameter and the square root of the notch root radius does exist. Further examination of the relationship showed that the fracture occurs at a fixed state of strain within a plastic zone having a size proportional to the original root radius. A departure, however, from the predicted behavior was evident with the introduction of plane strain components at the notch root. This is also discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminium-Lithium (Al–Li) alloys have been of interest since the 1950s when they were first used on a military aircraft. Having lithium as the main alloying element in Al alloys is attractive since (i) each 1 wt% Li reduces the density by ~3% and increases modulus by ~5%, and (ii) high strengths can be achieved by precipitation-hardening. During the 1980s, extensive research and development was carried out on alloys with high lithium contents (>2 wt%≡~8 at%) such as AA 8090 (Al 2.4 Li 1.2 Cu 0.7 Mg 0.12 Zr) (wt%). The mechanical properties of these ‘second-generation’ Al–Li alloys, however, did not match those of conventional Al (-Zn)-Mg-Cu alloys, and the lower fracture toughness of these alloys (for equivalent strengths was a particular problem. Thus, 2nd generation Al–Li alloys did not see widespread use. The experience with 2nd generation Al–Li alloys led to the development of ‘3rd generation’ alloys with lower Li contents (0.75–1.7 wt%), and some of these alloys have a better overall balance of properties, including fracture toughness, than the best available conventional Al alloys. These 3rd generation Al–Li alloys should therefore see extensive use in future civil and military aircraft. This chapter on fracture toughness and fracture modes of aerospace Al–Li alloys outlines why fracture toughness is important for aerospace structures and components, and summarises testing procedures and terminologies in regard to plane-strain and plane-stress fracture toughness. The relationships between fracture toughness/fracture modes and microstructural features such as grain morphology, constituent particles, impurity phases, matrix precipitates, grain-boundary precipitates, and grain boundary segregation, are then discussed. Proposed explanations for the low fracture toughness of 2nd generation Al–Li alloys, associated with low-energy intergranular and transgranular shear fractures, are discussed in some depth, followed by a summary of the alloy-design principles behind the development of 3rd generation Al–Li alloys with a much improved resistance to low-energy fracture modes. Quantitative data for fracture toughness of 2nd and 3rd generation Al–Li alloys in comparison with conventional Al alloys are provided, showing that 3rd generation Al–Li alloys have outstanding combinations of toughness and strength combined with reduced densities. The superior toughness of 3rd generation Al–Li alloys compared with 2nd generation alloys is reflected in the differences in fracture-surface topography and fracture path. The chapter concludes with a summary of the current and proposed uses of 3rd generation Al–Li alloys in aircraft structures and components

Book excerpt: Interpretations of fracture toughness characteristics as measured by various test procedures are presented for structural aluminum alloys. Quantitative definitions of the significance of engineering fracture toughness tests are provided by extension of analytical procedures evolved from fracture mechanics theory. The procedural simplicity of the engineering tests coupled with the analytical capabilities of fracture mechanics theory provides for a significant advancement in fracture-safe design procedures for aluminum alloys covering the full range of yield strength. Book excerpt: A systematic investigation was conducted to examine the fracture behavior of the structural aluminum alloys 2024, 6061, 7075, and 7178 (in selected heat treatments) tested under several controlled conditions. The investigation included both time independent (tensile, shear, and precracked notch-bend) fractures and time dependent (fatigue and stress corrosion) fractures. Specimens were obtained from both sheet and plate material and tested in longitudinal and transverse orientations. Strain rate effects on fracture morphology were examined in tension and shear tests. Fatigue fracture studies included an examination of the influence of minimum-to-maximum-load ratio on fracture morphology. Second-phase particles observed on fracture surfaces and metallographically prepared sections and corrosion products associated with stress corrosion fractures were analyzed chemically using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Fracture morphology was related to the microstructural features, the testing conditions, and the form of commercial product. The characteristic and distinguishing fracture features were reported for the different alloys. The information obtained from the systematic and controlled studies described here should prove useful in the analysis of service failures that often occur under complex service conditions.

Book excerpt: The effects of the various small, intermediate, and large precipitates on the fracture toughness and fatigue properties of aluminum alloys based on the 2024 and 7075 compositions were studied. Different concentrations and sizes of the precipitates were obtained by systematic variations in the chemical composition and also in the homogenization and aging treatments. The roles of the various precipitates in deformation and fracture were determined by slip-line and fractographic studies, and these results were carefully correlated with the fracture toughness data. The dispersion hardening effect of the intermediate precipitates appeared to have only a minor effect on the fracture toughness of both alloys, but the intermediate precipitates did exert a major indirect effect on the fracture toughness of the 7000-series specimens because of their effect on recrystallization and grain size. As expected, the large precipitates formed during ingot solidification were detrimental to both alloys. The fatigue properties of the 2000-series alloys appeared to be relatively insensitive to the range of metallurgical variables investigated, but significant improvements were obtained in the 7000-series specimens.
