This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of fibre composites in the design of load carrying aircraft structures has been increasing over the last few decades. At the same time, aluminium alloys are still present in many structural parts, which has led to an increase of the number of hybrid composite-aluminium structures. Often, these materials are joined at their interface by bolted connections. Due to their different response to thermal, mechanical and environmental impact, the composite and the aluminium alloy parts are subject to different design and certification practices and are therefore considered separately. The current methodologies used in the aircraft industry lack well-developed methods to account for the effects of the mismatch of material properties at the interface. One such effect is the thermally induced load which arises at elevated temperature due to the different thermal expansion properties of the constituent materials. With a growing number of hybrid structures, these matters need to be addressed. The rapid growth of computational power and development of simulation tools in recent years have made it possible to evaluate the material and structural response of hybrid structures without having to entirely rely on complex and expensive testing procedures. However, as the failure process of composite materials is not entirely understood, further research efforts are needed in order to develop reliable material models for the existing simulation tools. The work presented in this dissertation involves modelling and testing of bolted joints in hybrid composite-aluminium structures. The main focus is directed towards understanding the failure behaviour of the composite material under static and fatigue loading, and how to include this behaviour in large scale models of a typical bolted airframe structure in an efficient way. In addition to that, the influence of thermally induced loads on the strength and fatigue life is evaluated in order to establish a design strategy that can be used in the industrial context. The dissertation is divided into two parts. In the first one, the background and the theory are presented while the second one consists of five scientific papers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first Structural Dynamics book focused on this indispensable aspect of liquid rocket engine design. This book begins by reviewing basic concepts in Structural Dynamics, including the free and forced response of SDOF and MDOF systems, along with some discussion of how numerical solutions are generated. The book then moves to a discussion of specific applications of these techniques in LREs, progressing from component level (turbomachinery and combustion devices), up through engine system models, and finally to integration with a launch vehicle. Clarifies specific topics including the Campbell and SAFE Diagrams for resonance identification in turbomachinery, the complications of component analysis in the pump side due to a host of complication factors such as acoustic/structure interaction, the "side-loads" fluid/structure interaction problem in overexpanded rocket nozzles, and competing methods for generation overall engine system interface loads. Includes specific examples for illustration while closing with rotordynamic analysis, dynamic data analysis, and vibroacoustics.

Book excerpt: Mathematical models power the modern world; they allow us to design safe buildings, investigate changes to the climate, and study the transmission of diseases through a population. However, all models are uncertain: building contractors deviate from the planned design, humans impact the climate unpredictably, and diseases mutate and change. Modern advances in mathematics and statistics provide us with techniques to understand and quantify these sources of uncertainty, allowing us to predict and design with confidence. This book presents a comprehensive treatment of uncertainty: its conceptual nature, techniques to quantify uncertainty, and numerous examples to illustrate sound approaches. Several case studies are discussed in detail to demonstrate an end-to-end treatment of scientific modeling under uncertainty, including framing the problem, building and assessing a model, and answering meaningful questions. The book illustrates a computational approach with the Python package Grama, presenting fully reproducible examples that students and practitioners can quickly adapt to their own problems.

There are many civil and military aviation organisations and regulatory bodies. The functions and responsibilities of several of these organizations are summarised in this chapter. Owing to the importance of aircraft structural fatigue, a survey of fatigue design philosophies is also given. This is followed by (i) a discussion of the airworthiness certification methodology for materials and structures, starting with the initial mill products and proceeding via incremental levels to the finished aircraft; and (ii) an example of material certification for an aluminium–lithium (Al-Li) alloy that is a candidate for use in the airframes of light combat aircraft (LCA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the field of hybrid technology, describing the current state of knowledge concerning the hybrid material concept of laminated metallic and composite sheets for primary aeronautical structural applications. It is the only book to date on fatigue and fracture of fibre metal laminates (FMLs). The first section of the book provides a general background of the FML technology, highlighting the major FML types developed and studied over the past decades in conjunction with an overview of industrial developments based on filed patents. In turn, the second section discusses the mechanical response to quasi-static loading, together with the fracture phenomena during quasi-static and cyclic loading. To consider the durability aspects related to strength justification and certification of primary aircraft structures, the third section discusses thermal aspects related to FMLs and their mechanical response to various environmental and acoustic conditions.
