As an official army manual, it was primarily intended to increase the potential of Special Forces and guerrilla troops, however, "Improvised Munitions Handbook" represents perfect reading for all arms enthusiasts, as well as civilians considering their safety. This edition offers simple instructions, enriched with a large number of illustrations, on various techniques for constructing many different weapons and devices made of materials that can be bought in a drug or hardware store or found in a junkyard. The instructions are presented in a way that even people normally not familiar with making and handling munitions can use them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination was made of the metal strips of copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, mild steel, mild steel coated with acid-proof black paint and mild steel plated with copper, cadmium, nickel and zinc after storage for two years at atmospheric temperature and 50C. in contact with the explosives PETN, 50/50 Pentolite, Haleite, 60/40 Ednatol, 75/25 Tetrytol and RDX compositions A and B, both dry and containing approximately 0.5 percent moisture. After two years of continuous storage, the dry explosives had little or no effect on any of the metals. The action of the moist explosives on these same metals varied from a light to a heavy tarnishing effect with the exception of moist Haleite and 60/40 Ednatol, which had a decidedly heavier corrosive action on all metals except stainless steel. Stainless steel and aluminum appear to be the most corrosion-resistant of the metals considered. The report also contains the results of similar tests made using magnesium metal and a magnesium-aluminum alloy, J-1. It is considered that both are also satisfactory for use in ammunition components with all the explosives tested except Amatol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a hands-on approach to demilitarization and environmental aspects of energetic materials and munitions This book gives an overview of the environmental impact of the production, use, and cleanup of energetic materials and munitions. It provides scientists, engineers, environmental specialists, and users with the understanding of environmental issues for munitions and of the ways to improve design and manage potential risks. It covers the various aspects of how chemical properties influence fate, transport, and toxicity of new formulations and prescribes tools for reducing or alleviating environmental risks. In addition, it discusses pyrotechnics and the problem of dealing with munitions underwater. Chapters in Energetic Materials and Munitions: Life Cycle Management, Environmental Impact and Demilitarization look at demilitarization in general, as well as in the future. Topics covered include logistics, costs, and management; life cycle analysis and management; and greener munitions. Another introduces readers to the "One Health" approach in the design of sustainable munition compounds. Following that, readers are taught about land assessment for munitions-related contamination in military live-fire training. The book also examines the development and integration of environmental, safety, and occupational health information. -Brings together in one source expertise and in-depth information on the current and future state of how we handle the production, use, and demilitarization of explosives and weaponry -A handy reference for experienced practitioners, as well as for training young professionals in the field -Every chapter contains real-life examples and proposes future directions for the field Energetic Materials and Munitions: Life Cycle Management, Environmental Impact and Demilitarization is an important book for explosives specialists, pyrotechnicians, materials scientists, military authorities, safety officers, health officers, and chemical engineers.

This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has a stockpile of approximately 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions. About 60,000 tons are added to the stockpile each year. Munitions include projectiles, bombs, rockets, landmines, and missiles. Open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of these munitions has been a common disposal practice for decades, although it has decreased significantly since 2011. OB/OD is relatively quick, procedurally straightforward, and inexpensive. However, the downside of OB and OD is that they release contaminants from the operation directly into the environment. Over time, a number of technology alternatives to OB/OD have become available and more are in research and development. Alternative technologies generally involve some type of contained destruction of the energetic materials, including contained burning or contained detonation as well as contained methods that forego combustion or detonation. Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.
