Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this project was to explore and develop the area of technetium metal-metal multiple bond chemistry. At the outset of the project, examples of metal-metal multiply bonded complexes of technetium were primarily limited to those supported by halide and carboxylate ligands. As a result, we intended to significantly expand the number of complexes containing Tc-Tc multiple bonds using ligands other than carboxylates or halides. In order to achieve this goal, the results obtained from years of dirhenium research was used as a guide for the development of new technetium compounds. Our emphasis, however, was on pursuing unanticipated results and exploiting the inherent differences between technetium and rhenium in order to develop chemistry beyond that which exists for rhenium. We have focused our attention on the preparation of dinuclear complexes with ligand sets that are known to support dinuclear metal-metal bonded cores in a variety of different metal oxidation states. Investigation of the consequences of electron addition and removal from metal-metal bonding manifold on the structural and physical properties of such dinuclear species will provide vital information regarding the electronic structure of Tc-Tc multiply bonded compounds.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in machine learning or artificial intelligence for vision and natural language processing that have enabled the development of new technologies such as personal assistants or self-driving cars have brought machine learning and artificial intelligence to the forefront of popular culture. The accumulation of these algorithmic advances along with the increasing availability of large data sets and readily available high performance computing has played an important role in bringing machine learning applications to such a wide range of disciplines. Given the emphasis in the chemical sciences on the relationship between structure and function, whether in biochemistry or in materials chemistry, adoption of machine learning by chemistsderivations where they are important

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the bond valence model, a description of acid-base bonding which is becoming increasingly popular particularly in fields such as materials science and mineralogy where solid state inorganic chemistry is important. Recent improvements in crystal structure determination have allowed the model to become more quantitative. Unlike other models of inorganic chemical bonding, the bond valence model is simple, intuitive, and predictive, and can be used for analysing crystal structures and the conceptual modelling of local as well as extended structures. This is the first book to explore in depth the theoretical basis of the model and to show how it can be applied to synthetic and solution chemistry. It emphasizes the separate roles of the constraints of chemistry and of three-dimensional space by analysing the chemistry of solids. Many applications of the model in physics, materials science, chemistry, mineralogy, soil science, surface science, and molecular biology are reviewed. The final chapter describes how the bond valence model relates to and represents a simplification of other models of inorganic chemical bonding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the series Chemical Thermodynamics provides a comprehensive review and critical evaluation of experimental data available for the chemical thermodynamics of inorganic compounds and aqueous species and complexes of technetium. The objective of the reviews in the series Chemical Thermodynamics is to provide a set of reliable thermodynamic data that can be used to describe the behaviour of the elements reviewed under conditions relevant for radioactive waste disposal systems and various geochemical environments. Data and their uncertainty limits are recommended for the formation energies, enthalpies and entropies of selected aqueous complexes, solids and gaseous compounds containing technetium. The data are internally consistent and compatible with the CODATA Key Values, as well as with the data in the earlier volumes in the series Chemical Thermodynamics. The book contains a detailed discussion of the selection procedures used
