The first phase of an effort to determine the relationship between physiologic heat stress and flight performance was conducted using the new NAWCADPAX flight simulator installed in an environmental chamber. Performance scores declined after subjects were exposed to the hot alert conditions relative to control, though the difference was not statistically significant. Correlation analysis indicated a marginal relationship between the change in performance and rectal and mean skin temperatures (r = 0.59 and 0.55, respectively). The experimental design did not account for the increased generation of metabolic heat associated with straining against high G forces, though it did include radiant heat loads. The next phase will include physical work in the cockpit to account for this additional factor.

Book excerpt: "With the advent of the full pressure suit, the problems of increased work load on the pilot's metabolic rate becomes important. A F7U mock-up was used wherein a simple pilot’s task was performed, which consisted of pushing the stick and two throttles forward and backwards every 10 seconds for six minutes. Metabolic rates were obtained while subjects were wearing the full pressure suit pressurized to 2 p.s.i and the full pressure suit in the unpressurized condition; the rates obtained were compared to those of subjects wearing summer flight suits. The results revealed that there were no statistically significant differences between the subjects’ metabolic rate when wearing the summer flight suit and when wearing the pressure suit unpressurized. There was a statistically significant difference between the subjects’ metabolic rate when wearing the pressure suit pressurized and when wearing the pressure suit unpressurized or the summer flight suit. It is recommended that more extensive studies for longer periods of time be carried out in a flight simulator representative of the type aircraft that requires the use of a pressure suit. In this way, the interaction between such stress conditions as emergency, work task, and suit pressurization could be studied."--Abstract.
