Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominica is an island rich in culture and with a history that encompasses various forms of the country's transformation from colonialism to independence. African slaves, brought to the island to work on the British plantations, carried with them their various myths, beliefs, languages and art forms and these have passed down through the generations. Today they are still an integral part of this country's heritage. The characters in Mesy Kwik Kwak are used to portray some of these and other aspects of Dominican life which still have their bearing from years past. The young boys in The Stone and in The Pilgrim introduce us to the belief of Dominicans in evil spirits, the lougarou and la diabless, and the power of religion. Grandpa Was in America shows us Dominica's fixation to the American way of life and in A Father's Hope we see the widening gap between generations in the country-and there's more. So read along with Giftus as he tells his story. Mesy Kwik Kwak

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giftus Johns Ma William and her Circle of Friends recreates the idyllic life in the village of Senjo with a shopkeeper, Ma William, at its center. Her shop is a mecca of sorts; one where the villagers assemble to discuss the issues that impact their lives. John constructs an edenic landscape where communal activities such as playing mas, helping the local fishermen, attending mass, or going to a religious wake occupy center stage in the lives of the villagers. However, the impression of a settled and close-knit village is illusory. Politics fragments the community. Migration takes a toll as young and old seek supposedly greener pastures. The village is slowly changing as a result of these external forces. The reader is left to wonder whether or not these changes are indeed for the better. Written with great sensitivity and attention to local speech rhythms, Giftus Johns most recent work recreates a life which is slowly witnessing its demise. This book confirms Johns reputation as one of Dominicas finest writers. Justice Irving W. Andr Ontario, Canada Giftus John has done it again! His Ma William and Her Circle of Friends continues his great tradition of entertaining and enlightening Caribbean prose. This is a must-read for people of the Caribbean and for those who love the Caribbean or want an education in Caribbean culture. Vaughn E. Book excerpt: Author Giftus John's goal for his home island of Dominica is to reach to the top of the mountain-a milestone of greatness-despite all the difficulties it faces. Although Dominicans may leave their home in pursuit of other dreams, he believes that someday they will return to a better land. Building on this idea, Verses from atop the Mountain expresses John's passion and concern for events in his homeland and his hopes that its negative situations will soon be remedied. This anthology of poems focuses on an array of topics: politics, nature, culture, love of country, abuse, life and death, and human behavior. Poems such as "The Migrant's Song," also explore the conditions that Dominicans may encounter in their adopted homelands, like the United States. Although there are hurdles to navigate for Dominica, as John makes clear in the last poem of the collection, "Living in Hope," there is hope for the future. Sharing one man's deep love for the land he still calls home, Verses from atop the Mountain presents poetry that invites you to experience the beauty and unique life of Dominica.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1954, The Orchid House, Phyllis Shand Allfrey's only published novel, is a classic of Caribbean literature. In this markedly autobiographical story of the three daughters of a once-powerful but now impoverished white family, Allfrey interweaves her family's history with the history of her home island of Dominica in the twentieth century. The novel is written in a sensuous style and the story remarkably told through the eyes of Lally, the black nurse of the three sisters. Often praised for the clearsightedness of its analysis of the Dominican historical process, The Orchid House stands at a crucial intersection of West Indian politics. It was during this period that the colonized took over from the colonizer the direction of local governments. Allfrey, a Fabian socialist and founder of Dominica's first political party, articulates in this novel the central tenet of a political philosophy that guided a lifetime of grassroots activism: that profound changes had to take place in the power structures of Caribbean societies to bring social justice to its peoples, and that those who persevered in seeking to revive the past were doomed. Phyllis Shand Allfrey, novelist and poet, was born in Dominica, where her father was Crown Attorney. Her work has often been compared to that of her compatriot and friend, Jean Rhys. The novel has been made into a film for British television. Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert is an associate professor in the Department of Hispanic Studies at Vassar College. She co-edited Green Cane and Juicy Flotsam: Short Stories by Caribbean Women (Rutgers University Press).

But when an overly-enthusiastic attempt at squeezing herself into them leads her to fall and lose consciousness, she is faced with just that possibility. When she awakens with both a bruised ego and a bump on her head, she's not in her tiny apartment but her childhood bedroom circa 1999-the spring of her senior year in high school. Jillian knows that time travel isn't logical. But then again, neither was her decision to wear skinny jeans. As she attempts to navigate her way through the halls of Reynolds High, walking the same path and making the same choices she made years before, she knows that any change she makes can have a catastrophic effect on her future. But when she strikes up an unexpected friendship with motorcycle-riding, cigarette-smoking Luke Chambers, can she pretend to be the same shy girl she once was? At least she has her pink sparkly flask to take the edge off. One little change won't hurt, right?

Tim is immediately a little uneased by the voice of his dead father; he is very much uneased by the words of that voice declaring the destination of this bus is Hell. With no need to rush to arrival at the promised eternity waiting at the end of this ride, Tim will take the scenic route through what his alternative might have been. Introduced to a reality of Heaven a bit different from what he had expected, his questions of what he possibly might have done to warrant Hell are quickly replaced with questions of how much worse Hell could possibly be than the Heaven he finds himself journeying through. Caught between the horror of the certainty of the present, and the uncertainty of how much worse the future might be, Tim finds himself wondering as the wheels roll 'round whether he ever wants to get off the bus he is sure he wishes he had never boarded to begin with.

With their own gifts of magic, freakiness, and the ability to control animals, the three were able to survive its madness. Also, by allying themselves with the inhuman misfits that live there, the teens were able to defeat psycho Charlie, the circus' only clown. However, during those three years of quiet bliss, Charlie plans his revenge in the spirit world. It's on the night of the senior Halloween Carnival that the clown makes his Astounding Return before all of Spoonersville. Now, Daniel, Kyle, and Christy-Anne attempt to regain their former power from the Dark Circus to destroy him. If that wasn't enough, the trio must face off with three newcomers to their town who also demonstrate powers given to them by the Dark Circus.
