Download or read book Messel written by Stephan Schaal and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located near Frankfurt, Germany, the oil shales of Messel are known around the world as the site of one of the most magnificent collections of preserved paleontological remains in existence. Rivalling and in some respects surpassing the famed La Brea Tar Pits, the Messel site contains in an exceptional state of preservation the abundant remains of animals and plants that lived some 50 million years ago. Not only are the skeletons and other hard parts preserved in detail, but also the soft tissues that are normally lost in the process of fossilization: the skin, scales, feathers, fur and hair that give a rare life-like appearance to the remains. Among the animals found here, virtually intact, are insects, lizards, birds, bats, horses, and primates. The fossil plant remains include ferns, conifers, and palms--complete with the fine detail of leaves and structure that make these specimens so remarkable. This book offers a spectacular chronicle of the Messel site--in lavish full-color photographs and expert textual descriptions that describe the biogeographical significance of the findings. The book will be of value not only to palaeontologists but also to zoologists and botanists, and indeed to all who are interested in the ancient history of life on Earth.

Book Synopsis Electron–Photon Shower Distribution Function by : H. Messel
Download or read book Electron–Photon Shower Distribution Function written by H. Messel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 1519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron-Photon Shower Distribution Function: Tables for Lead, Copper and Air Absorbers presents numerical results of the electron-photon shower distribution function for lead, copper, and air absorbers. Electron or photon interactions, including Compton scattering, elastic Coulomb scattering, and the photo-electric effect, are taken into account in the calculations. This book consists of four chapters and begins with a review of both theoretical and experimental work aimed at deducing the characteristics of the cascade produced from the propagation of high energy electrons and photons through matter. The next two chapters discuss in some detail the method of simulating the electron-photon cascade on a digital computer and present the cross-sections for all processes that are simulated in the program written for the English-Electric-Leo KDF9. The manner in which each process is subjected to computer simulations is described. The results come from two computer programs: the first was written for SILLIAC and the second for KDF9. This monograph will be a valuable resource for computer scientists, mathematicians, and physicists.

Download or read book Earth and Life written by John A. Talent and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-28 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the broad pattern of increasing biodiversity through time, and recurrent events of minor and major ecosphere reorganization. Intense scrutiny is devoted to the pattern of physical (including isotopic), sedimentary and biotic circumstances through the time intervals during which life crises occurred. These events affected terrestrial, lacustrine and estuarine ecosystems, locally and globally, but have affected continental shelf ecosystems and even deep ocean ecosystems. The pattern of these events is the backdrop against which modelling the pattern of future environmental change needs to be evaluated.

Book Synopsis Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems by : Paul Selden
Download or read book Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems written by Paul Selden and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems was widely praised for its coverage and approach in describing and illustrating 14 well-known fossil sites from around the world. The authors have now updated the text and added 6 new chapters with many new color illustrations. Following a general introduction to fossil Lagerstätten, each chapter deals with a single site and follows the same format: its evolutionary position and significance; its background sedimentology, stratigraphy and palaeoenvironment; a description of the biota and palaeoecology; a comparison with other similar Lagerstätten; and a list of relevant museums and suggestions for visiting the sites. This study of exceptionally well-preserved fossil sites from different periods in geological time provides a picture of the evolution of ecosystems through the ages. Covers several sites that are not listed in other Lagerstatten books making this the most comprehensive book on the topic; Beautifully illustrated throughout with more than 450 color photographs and diagrams; Provides value to a wide range of students and professionals in palaeontology and related sciences.
