Book excerpt: This work presents novel simulation techniques for injection molding of fiber reinforced polymers. These include approaches for anisotropic flow modeling, hydrodynamic forces from fluid on fibers, contact forces between fibers, a novel fiber breakage modeling approach and anisotropic warpage analysis. Due to the coupling of fiber breakage and anisotropic flow modeling, the fiber breakage directly influences the modeled cavity pressure, which is validated with experimental data.

Book excerpt: This work describes a method for weighted least squares approximation of an unbounded number of data points using a B-spline function. The method can shift the bounded B-spline function definition range during run-time. The approximation method is used for optimizing velocity trajectories for an electric vehicle with respect to travel time, comfort and energy consumption. The trajectory optimization method is extended to a driver assistance system for automated vehicle longitudinal control.

Book excerpt: In this book, a new three-dimensional approach for the process simulation of SMC is developed. This approach takes into account both, the core layer that is dominated by the extensional viscosity and the thin lubrication layer. In order to transfer the information from the process to the structure simulation, a CAE chain is further developed. In addition, a new rheological tool is developed to analyze flow behavior experimentally and to provide the required material parameters.

Book excerpt: Ihrer Arbeit in der Originalsprache: This work aims at identifying relevant road surface characteristics to mitigate tire-road noise of free-rolling tires using a systematic approach. As using open porous roads is already known as an efficient measure to reduce tire rolling noise, this study will focus on compact road surfaces which have a low acoustic absorption. Measurements on standardized ISO 10844 test tracks and on public roads are used to study the norm's representativity and its completeness.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Compression Resin Transfer Molding (CRTM), the fiber preform is placed in the mold; the top of the mold is lowered until there is a small gap between the preform and the mold. The measured amount of resin is injected through one or more gates into this highly permeable gap. Then the resin injection is switched off and the mold is closed by moving the mold platen towards the preform until it reaches the desired thickness. This action compresses the preform and pressurizes the resin to flow into the preform and occupy the empty regions between the fibers. This process is very attractive for high volume production of net shape composite structures and is being considered by automobile manufacturing industry for structural components. The challenge is to create void free structures with reasonable applied force with filling times of the order of a few minutes. A model and simulation of the process can help identify the important parameters in the process that will aid in achieving this goal. An existing numerical simulation that can model the RTM process has been modified to accommodate the presence of gap elements, compression of preform and reduction of mesh size during the process. The process is modeled in three stages: (i) resin injection into the gap, (ii) closing of the gap with negligible compression of the preform and (iii) preform compaction. An analysis of the process has been conducted to identify the important non-dimensional parameters that influence the process. A parametric study reveals the relationship between the material, process and the geometric variables in this process. To validate the numerical model, an experimental set-up was constructed. The set-up includes a semi cylindrical transparent mold which is compressed using pressurized water in a collapsible tube. Independent experiments are conducted to measure the permeability of the fabric and the force required for compression. Various process parameters such as the location of the resin front during the compression, the rate of compression and the force are recorded as a function of time. These results are compared with the simulation to gauge the accuracy of the model and the reliability in the characterization of the material parameters. This simulation should prove useful in development of process inputs for large scale structures to produce void free parts with optimal compression rates and pressures.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern engineering materials subjected to unfavorable mechanical and environmental conditions decrease in strength due to the accumulation of microstructural changes. For example, considering damage in metals we can mention creep damage, ductile plastic damage, embrittlement of steels and fatigue damage. To properly estimate the value of damage when designing reliable structures it is necessary to formulate the damage phenomenon in terms of mechanics. Then it is possible to analyse various engineering problems using analytical and computational techniques. During the last two decades the basic principles of continuum damage mechanics were formulated and some special problems were solved. Many scientific papers were published and several conferences on damage mechanics took place. Now continuum damage mechanics is rapidly developing branch of fracture mechanics. This book is probably the first one on the subject; it contains a sys tematic description of the basic aspects of damage mechanics and some of its applications. In general, a theoretical description of damage can be rather compli cated. The experiments in this field are difficult (especially under multiax ial stress and non-proportional loading). Therefore, experimental data, as a rule, are scarce. Determination of functions and constants, which play a role in the complex variants of the theory, from available experimental data is often practically impossible. ix L.M. Kachanov The problems of damage mechanics are mainly engineering ones. Therefore, the author tries to avoid superfluous mathematical formalism. Some more details of the book's subject can be found in the list of con tents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book extensively reviews Polypropylene (PP), the second most widely produced thermoplastic material, having been produced for over 60 years. Its synthesis, processing and application are still accompanied by vigorous R&D developments because the properties of PP are at the borderline between those of commodity and engineering thermoplastics. Readers are introduced to various tacticities and polymorphs of PP, and their effects on structural properties. Further, the book addresses the control of optical properties using nucleants, provides strategies for overcoming the limited cold/impact resistance of PP, examines in detail the effects of recycling, and presents guidelines for the property modification of PPs through foaming, filling and reinforcing with respect to target applications. Special attention is paid to descriptions and models of properties as a function of morphological variables. Last but not least, the book suggests potential practical applications of PP-based systems, especially in the packaging, appliances, building/construction, textile and automotive sectors. Each chapter, written by internationally respected scientists, reflects the current state-of-art in the respective field and offers a vital source of information for students, researchers and engineers interested in the morphology, properties, testing and modeling of PP and PP-based systems. The content is indispensable to the appropriate application of PPs and related composites.
