Book Synopsis Folktales of Newfoundland Pbdirect by : J.D.A. Widdowson
Download or read book Folktales of Newfoundland Pbdirect written by J.D.A. Widdowson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Newfoundland folk narratives, first published in 1996, grew out of extensive fieldwork in folk culture in the province. The intention was to collect as broad a spectrum of traditional material as possible, and Folktales of Newfoundland is notable not only for the number and quality of its narratives, but also for the format in which they are presented. A special transcription system conveys to the reader the accents and rhythms of each performance, and the endnote to each tale features an analysis of the narrator’s language. In addition, Newfoundland has preserved many aspects of English and Irish folk tradition, some of which are no longer active in the countries of their origin. Working from the premise that traditions virtually unknown in England might still survive in active form in Newfoundland, the researchers set out to discover if this was in fact the case.

Book Synopsis Translations of the Carnival Comedies of Hans Sachs (1494-1576) by : Hans Sachs
Download or read book Translations of the Carnival Comedies of Hans Sachs (1494-1576) written by Hans Sachs and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work contains a general introduction to Sachs's carnival comedies together with nine plays in translation. The short situation comedies offer us brief but vivid enactments of scenes from daily life in the sixteenth century, humorously illustrating the petty foibles and weaknesses which govern us all. Yet in the few hundred lines which each occupies, he also touches on profound human truths, as well as highlighting current political and social ills. The plays will be of general interest to students of history, sociology, drama, and of the human condition in general, as well as to those who simply enjoy well-crafted comedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merry Tales and Three Shrovetide Plays Though the most famous of the Meister-singers, the great popularity that Hans Sachs enjoyed was due, not so much to the elaborate production of meister songs under the two hundred and thirty formulated rules that governed such compositions, as to the more familiar versification in which he appealed directly to the hearts of his neighbours and countrymen. Therefore his simple tales have been selected for translation in this volume, though doubtless their author considered them the lighter and less artistic of his work. He was a most prolific writer; the number of his pieces of verse being more than six thousand with over half a million of lines. He was born on November 5, 1494, and died on January 20, 1576; thus completing a life of a little more than eighty-one years. His father, Jorg Sachs, was a tailor, a burgher of Nuremberg, in moderate circumstances, but of sufficiently liberal mind to give his son, until he was sixteen years old, the advantage of one of the four Latin schools of Nuremberg, which were then at their highest standard of excellence.
