Book Synopsis Ecology and Management of Paper Birch and Black Cottonwood in Southern British Columbia by : Suzanne Simard
Download or read book Ecology and Management of Paper Birch and Black Cottonwood in Southern British Columbia written by Suzanne Simard and published by Forest Science Research Branch, Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 1992 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardwoods have long been disposed of to create coniferous forests of high quality. Recently, there have been concerns that this policy is a mistake, not only because the demand for hardwoods is growing but because of the negative aspects of growing coniferous monocultures. This analysis examined hardwood inventory, ecology, management, and use issues through a summary of hardwood inventory in the Kamloops Forest Region, a field assessment of management practices and stand conditions in two subzones in the region, and a review of literature related to paper birch and black cottonwood, the predominant species in the productive subzones. The field assessment consisted of the sampling of regeneration stands younger than 20 years to identify management practices that were successful for hardwood, conifer, or mixedwood production. Immature-mature stands older than 20 years were sampled across a range of ecosystems to assess their stand structure, species composition, and growth and yield.
Book Synopsis Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management by : John M. Pye
Download or read book Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management written by John M. Pye and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2006, more than 170 researchers and managers from the United States, Canada, and Mexico convened in Boulder, Colorado, to discuss the state of the science in environmental threat assessment. This two-volume general technical report compiles peer-reviewed papers that were among those presented during the 3-day conference. Papers are organized by four broad topical sections--Land, Air and Water, Fire, and Pests/Biota--and are divided into syntheses and case studies. Land topics include discussions of forest land conversion and soil quality as well as investigations of species' responses to climate change. Air and water topics include discussions of forest vulnerability to severe weather and storm damage modeling. Fire topics include discussions of wildland arson and wildfire risk management as well as how people precieve wildfire risk and uncertainty. Pests/biota topics include discussions of risk mapping and probabilistic risk assessments as well as investigations of individual threats, including the southern pine beetle and Phytophora alni. Ultimately, this publication will foster exchange and collaboration between those who develop knowledge and tools for threat assessment and those who are responsible for managing forests and rangelands.
