Book excerpt: Mercy Flights--America's first not-for-profit air ambulance service--was created in 1949 in direct response to the polio epidemic and medical transportation problems in Southern Oregon and Northern California. At that time, two small general hospitals provided basic medical care for the community of 17,000 residents. The nearest specialty hospitals for injuries and more complex care were in Eugene (167 miles), Portland (274 miles), and San Francisco (363 miles). Since the Interstate Highway System had not yet been built, these distances were very slowly traveled on two-lane roads. George Milligan, a young air traffic controller--and a pilot himself--mobilized the community to create Mercy Flights and recruited volunteer pilots and nurses to staff the service. The story of Mercy Flights is a grassroots account of heroism, service, creativity, tenacity, and strong community leadership.

Beyond The Palace takes you on a ride through the city's long and illustrious music history; from the Upstage Club where musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Chinnock, David Sancious and Southside Johnny used to jam all night to early clubs like The Student Prince and Sunshine In; from the legendary Stone Pony to clubs like T-Birds Cafe and The Saint. The book contains interviews with over 45 artists and features over 50 photographs from the world-famous photographer Debra L. Rothenberg. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Henry “Red” Duke Jr., MD, was an icon of twentieth-century medicine, a pioneer and visionary, and a lifelong son of Texas who, far from forgetting his roots, reveled in them. Bryant Boutwell’s entertaining and meticulously researched biography of Red Duke, based on years of interviews with Duke and his family, friends, and colleagues as well as painstaking exploration of both public archives and personal papers and effects, not only pays tribute to a great surgeon and his influence but also crafts a detailed and intimate portrait of the man behind the larger-than-life television image. Not only did Duke found the Life Flight air ambulance service that helped place Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Texas Medical Center at the forefront of the nation’s trauma units, he also advanced the use of media communications for reaching the public with both common-sense and cutting-edge health information. His famous tagline—“From the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston . . . I’m Dr. Red Duke”—delivered in the deadpan drawl of a Texan, could be heard in countless homes during the broadcast of the local evening news during the 1980s and 1990s. Beyond these accomplishments, Duke was an Eagle Scout, an ordained minister, a medical missionary, a conservationist, a hunting guide, and a tank commander. Featuring a wealth of previously unpublished images that help to chronicle Duke’s life and storied career, I’m Dr. Red Duke opens with a foreword by fellow Houstonian George H. W. Bush, who calls Duke “one of the brightest Points of Light Barbara and I have had the privilege to know.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Stay Black and Die, I. Augustus Durham examines melancholy and genius in black culture, letters, and media from the nineteenth century to the contemporary moment. Drawing on psychoanalysis, affect theory, and black studies, Durham explores the black mother as both a lost object and a found subject often obscured when constituting a cultural legacy of genius across history. He analyzes the works of Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, Marvin Gaye, Octavia E. Butler, and Kendrick Lamar to show how black cultural practices and aesthetics abstract and reveal the lost mother through performance. Whether attributing Douglass’s intellect to his matrilineage, reading Gaye’s falsetto singing voice as a move to interpolate black female vocality, or examining the women in Ellison’s life who encouraged his aesthetic interests, Durham demonstrates that melancholy becomes the catalyst for genius and genius in turn is a signifier of the maternal. Using psychoanalysis to develop a theory of racial melancholy while “playing” with affect theory to investigate racial aesthetics, Durham theorizes the role of the feminine, especially the black maternal, in the production of black masculinist genius.

Book excerpt: Life is good: it’s a phrase I use all the time. Sometimes I’ve even said it when I’ve just crashed my motorbike, fallen with my horse, or had to make an emergency landing when flying an aircraft through thick cloud. I believe in seizing every opportunity that life offers you. That’s why, when I was on a motorcycle holiday in Germany and saw a fairground, I immediately signed up to become a Wall of Death rider. It’s why, when I was first at the solo controls of an aerobatic aircraft, I thought I’d try to loop-the-loop. It’s also why I accepted every job offer that came my way, whether it was as a stunt rider, saddlery maker or snake hunter. It’s how I’ve lived my life: I hope you enjoy reading about it.

Their father and grandfather is also married with two more children and will probably outlive them all by many years. Even as things in their world begin to settle down, Mykel is pulled away to unite others involved in that clandestine heavenly project. This will take him and others on a search around the globe. When all is said and done, Mykel and Nichole warmly weave together wayward members of a heavenly ordained project. Yet still, when a remnant of a long-forgotten evil rears its head once again, it claims an angelic prince. So angels must gather in a final thunderous conflict.

Vast forests, high mountains, stark deserts all beckon the adventurous, whether they are hiking the Pacific Coast Trail, scaling the challenging faces of Yosemite, or out for a day hike along the Columbia Gorge. Yet along with this natural beauty comes risk, even for the most well-prepared. Search and Rescue Pacific Coast collects the stories of the mountaineers, rangers, and ordinary volunteers who step in to help when the terrain and conditions show no mercy. Covering historical and recent events, this collection includes: Stories of rescues on Mt. Rainier and Mt. Hood, including two in which the rescue volunteers’ helicopters crashed. Dramatic rescues along the Pacific Coast Trail. How the oldest volunteer search and rescue organization in the nation rescued 144 hikers from a raging forest fire in Eagle Creek, Oregon. The story of a search and rescue veteran who required his own rescue while attempting to help a family trapped by rising floodwaters in California. The tale of a woman who was charged with 98 felonies after a dramatic search and rescue operation on the Oregon coast. The grit and determination of these search and rescue volunteers will inspire readers—and give them appreciation for the lessons of the wilderness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My inspiration for the name of this memoir is derived from the superstitious wives tale about cats having nine lives. The notion of that myth, while the origin is unknown to me, seemed to be a fitting title line. In the course of a 26 year career as an Air Force Pilot, there were the usual sorts of in-flight emergencies and associated difficulties. Yet there were still other life or death situations wherein it seemed things were entirely out of my control; it was if I was merely along for the ride as a spectator. Those events constitute the eight very distinct occasions wherein, but for the Grace of God and Divine Intervention, I believe it is most doubtful that I would still be around to author the memoirs embodied in this autobiography.
