Download or read book Cooking Fluorescent Lamps: An Evaporation-condensation Process to Recycle Mercury from Fluorescent Lamps written by Scott J. Ammon and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that over 120,000 kg of mercury will be released annually into the environment. Mercury is a poison and a hazardous material that must be managed as a hazardous waste upon disposal. One source of mercury has been from the improper disposal of inoperative fluorescent lamps. A fluorescent lamp is a tube of glass filled with mercury vapor that is sealed at both ends and when an electrical current is passed through the mercury vapor, light is emitted. This experimental research investigation designed, assembled and tested a machine that used an evaporation-condensation process to capture mercury from four-foot fluorescent lamps. This process known as cooking fluorescent lamps was not completely successful in removing mercury from the 347 inoperative four-foot fluorescent lamps to a non-hazardous determination. Lab analysis revealed the process missed non-hazardous determination by only 0.017 milligrams per cubic liter.

Book Synopsis Life Cycle Assessment Handbook by : Mary Ann Curran
Download or read book Life Cycle Assessment Handbook written by Mary Ann Curran and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind, the Life Cycle Assessment Handbook: A Guide for Environmentally Sustainable Products will become an invaluable resource for environmentally progressive manufacturers and suppliers, product and process designers, executives and managers, and government officials who want to learn about this essential component of environmental sustainability. As the last several decades have seen a dramatic rise in the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in decision making, the interest in the life cycle concept as an environmental management and sustainability tool continues to grow. The LCA Handbook offers a look at the role that life cycle information, in the hands of companies, governments, and consumers, may have in improving the environmental performance of products and technologies. It concisely and clearly presents the various aspects of LCA in order to help the reader better understand the subject. The content of the book was designed with a certain flow in mind. After a high-level overview to describe current views and state-of-the-practice of LCA, it presents chapters that address specific LCA methodological issues including creating life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment, and capturing eco-systems services. These are followed by example applications of LCA in the agri-food industry; sustainable supply chain management; solid waste management; mining and mineral extraction; forest products; buildings; product innovation; and sustainable chemistry and engineering. The international success of the sustainability paradigm needs the participation of many stakeholders, including citizens, corporations, academia, and NGOs. The handbook links LCA and responsible decision making and how the life cycle concept is a critical element in environmental sustainability. It covers issues such as building capacity in developing countries and emerging economies so that they are more capable of harnessing the potential in LCA for sustainable development. Governments play a very important role with the leverage they have through procurement, regulation, international treaties, tax incentives, public outreach, and other policy tools. This compilation points to the clear trend for incorporating life cycle information into the design and development processes for products and policies, just as quality and safety concerns are now addressed throughout product design and development.
Book Synopsis The Economics of Waste by : Richard C. Porter
Download or read book The Economics of Waste written by Richard C. Porter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this concise, engaging, and provocative work, Richard Porter introduces readers to the economic tools that can be applied to problems involved in handling a diverse range of waste products from business and households. Emphasizing the impossibility of achieving a zero-risk environment, Porter focuses on the choices that apply in real world decisions about waste. Acknowledging that effective waste policy integrates knowledge from several disciplines, Porter focuses on the use of economic analysis to reveal the costs of different policies and therefore how much can be done to meet goals to protect human health and the environment. With abundant examples, he considers subjects such as landfills, incineration, and illegal disposal. He discusses the international trade in waste, the costs and benefits of recycling, and special topics such as hazardous materials, Superfund, and nuclear waste. While making clear his belief that not every form of waste presents the same amount of risk, Porter stresses the need for open-minded approaches to developing new policies. For students, policymakers, and general readers, he provides insight and accessibility to a subject that others might leave out-of-sight, out-of-mind, or buried under an impenetrable prose of statistics and jargon.
