Book excerpt: The first thing to note about this book is that it is small, only the size of a paperback. The blurb on the inside of the dust jacket declares that this is one of four volumes to be published in a series, Merchant Ships of the World in Color, "a pictorial survey of the merchant ship - ocean liner, tramp steamer, freighter, tanker - and its development during the last one hundred years". The introduction is an essay about the design, appearance and use of merchant ships between 1910 and 1929, "the period covered by this book was one of particular interest and variety...various borrowings from the era of sail still showed in many of the older steamers...The advent of the First World War cut right across the hitherto steady line of evolution...born of the war were many new ideas...actual hull design, the grouping of deckhouses and superstructure, new cargo handling gear and alternative forms of propulsion." The most obvious attraction in the book is the set of 96 color plates, each one illustrating a different ship, "each has been chosen either for her own particular interest or as repesentative of a particular type or hull layout". Each illustration also includes a depiction of the house flag for the shipping line, which brings me to the less obvious, but equally worthwhile, attraction of the text! Each ship has slightly more than a page of text describing its characteristics, and outlining the history of the vessels in that class. The print is small, which is good news in such a small book - plenty of information is packed into a small space! At the back of the book there is a section of diagramatic comparisons, so you can get a better idea about the various design features described. There is also a list of ships illustrated, grouped according to nationality, and another list grouped according to type and trade. Finally, there is a list of all the ships in the book, including all those mentioned in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1985. When modern sovereign states were first established in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries they did not immediately assume full control over their national economies. The arrangements inherited from the middle-ages survived for some time so that ports, inland commercial centres, provinces and even private persons retained a wide measure of control over the movement of goods from one place to another. This study looks at the rise and development of the great industries of Western Europe through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Common Market of the twentieth century owed much to the pioneer work of nineteenth-century statesmen who attempted in various ways to liberalize European trade.

She was built as the schooner Margarethe for German owners. A sale in 1927 saw her renamed Olga and she was lengthened in 1936. During the Second World War, she was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine and served as an auxiliary ship between 1941 and 1943. In 1953, the ship was again lengthened to 133 feet 9 inches (40.77 m). In 1959, she was sold for conversion to a floating radio station and was renamed Bon Jour. Subsequently, she was renamed Magda Maria in 1961 and Mi Amigo in 1962. She served, intermittently, as a radio ship, until 1980, when she sank in a gale. The ship, was built, as a three masted schooner SS Margarethe, by Deutsche Werke, Kiel in 1921, for Ernst Simon A.G. As constructed, she was 96 feet 8 inches (29.46 m) long, with a beam of 23 feet 1 inch (7.04 m) and a depth of 9 feet 5 inches (2.87 m). The overall weight being 129 tons at this time. Simon sailed the boat around various Baltic ports carrying general cargo. She was sold to Heinrich Koppelmann in 1927. Koppelmann renamed her Olga after his wife. In 1928, she was strengthened and a four cylinder engine installed. The weight increased to 159 GRT, 97 NRT. One of her wooden masts was replaced by a steel mast. Olga had Hamburg as her port of registry. She was allocated the Code Letters RBGF. In 1936, Olga was lengthened and a new Klockner-Humbolt diesel engine fitted (six cylinders of 8 inches (22 cm) diameter...
