Book Synopsis Paraguay and the Triple Alliance by : Harris Gaylord Warren
Download or read book Paraguay and the Triple Alliance written by Harris Gaylord Warren and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the War of the Triple Alliance—the most terrible conflict in South American history—Paraguay was almost annihilated by the armed forces of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The chaotic postwar decade began with the Allied occupation of Asunción, which lasted seven years, and was marked by Brazilian-Argentine rivalry and interference in Paraguayan affairs and by the efforts of Paraguay’s governments to revive their stricken land, efforts often thwarted by corruption, factionalism, and revolutions. It ended with the arbitral award eliminating Argentina as a claimant to the Chaco Boreal and with the ascendancy of the Colorado Party, which dominated Paraguayan politics for most of the next century. This is the first book in any language that examines political, economic, and social developments to provide a well-integrated study of this significant and eventful period. It is based on archival resources, largely unused before, in England, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, as well as on newspapers, books, pamphlets, and published documents in many libraries. As one historian has said, the study is “a masterpiece of sleuthing and historical synthesis.” It will be of interest not only to students of Paraguay but also to those concerned with Brazilian, Argentine, and Latin American history.

Book Synopsis Voice in Political Discourse by : Antonio Reyes
Download or read book Voice in Political Discourse written by Antonio Reyes and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicians enact three main roles in political discourse - narrator, interlocutor and character - to achieve specific goals. This book explains these roles and how they constitute discursive strategies, correlating with political aims. In short: politicians evoke voices in discourse to strategically position themselves in relation to social actors and events. The book describes these strategies and analyzes the manner in which they are employed by three very different politicians - Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and George W. Bush. The roles are studied cross-culturally and from different ideological backgrounds. This book explains how political ideologies are constructed, defined and redefined by linguistic means, showing specific ways in which politicians manipulate language to achieve the goals on their political agenda. It applies new methodological approaches to the analysis of political discourse and also contributes to the sparse literature on political discourse analysis of Spanish-speaking politicians.

Book Synopsis Diccionario de procedimiento parlamentario / Dictionary of parliamentary procedure by : María Cristina Magee
Download or read book Diccionario de procedimiento parlamentario / Dictionary of parliamentary procedure written by María Cristina Magee and published by Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The translation of the different steps of the parliamentary procedure in our country has always raised difficulties, which at times, have led to serious misinterpretations, not always solved even by the passing of time. As it happens with the jargon of any specialty, the vocabulary used in Congress and provincial and local legislatures in the consideration of their legislative initiatives is specific, and all attempts to move away from it may lead to misunderstandings and awkward situations. Long before the creation of the Argentine Congress, our legislative houses attempted to reproduce—through translation—terminology and procedures to be able to successfully hold their meetings. To that end, it was found appropriate to resort to the old legislative bodies, such as the British Parliament, the Congress of the United States of America and the Legislative Assembly of France. Among the many specialty dictionaries in these latitudes, it is difficult to find one on parliamentary procedure; and up to the present, there is no other bilingual dictionary containing the number of specific terms that this dictionary contains. Being aware of this deficit, I have dared to build up, word by word, this work of unknown characteristics in the country, employing, to that end, the jargon of our National Congress and that of the Congress of the United States.
