Book excerpt: Interrupting the Soria family’s holiday feast, childish teenager Emily requires the hospital emergency room for an apparent attack of appendicitis. But a blunt nurse explains the truth: Emily is giving birth. The seventeen-year-old has tricked her mind and body into believing she isn’t pregnant, when—in a rare but not unheard of occurrence—the baby is full term and already being born. A life-affirming, feel-good story of love, family and the special way new babies can inspire, Making Hearts introduces a character readers will strongly care about and root for. Noelle wins the hearts of all with her loving enthusiasm for life, her wit, and by personally defeating the villain’s lowdown scheme in an astonishing climax readers will never forget. Praise for MAKING HEARTS: “Wow! I’ve never read a book like this! Totally engrossing, Making Hearts is an absolute tour de force. Jack Getze has done himself proud with this work. I’ve never read a story with an infant as the protagonist and more—an infant who acts proactively against formidable opponents with overpowering advantages and wins out. This is a book of supreme imagination, originality and most of all—heart. I am in complete awe of Getze’s talent displayed supremely in this work. This is the book the cliché—you gotta read this!—was invented for.” —Les Edgerton, author of The Genuine, Imitation, Plastic Kidnapping; Bomb; The Bitch and many others

From the moment Leilani Hart stepped foot into our quaint town, I knew she was trouble. With her big-city ideas and hotel heiress reputation, our picturesque island was at risk of becoming a tacky tourist trap. Well, I had news for her—she'd have to go through me first. From our first meeting, we were like fire and ice, and I couldn't help but imagine melting away all those frosty layers of hers—one smoldering kiss at a time. Love had always been synonymous with heartbreak for me. But for her, I might be willing to risk everything. Even if it means falling... for the enemy.

Each breath we take from birth until death sustains our fragile lives, yet most of the time we think very little about our breathing unless we have a problem. But breathing is always with us in everything we do. Through fascinating stories, Dr. White, a cardiologist, writes about real people and their challenges with breathing. This inspiration book provides much insight on something we each do several times a minute for a lifetime.

Book excerpt: “A volume brimming with humanitarian lessons in medicine and life alike.” —Kirkus Reviews "A generous, compassionate book about what it is to be human and what it is to care. Paul Seward writes in language so clear and compelling you can see straight through it and into the beating heart beneath." —Kate Cole–Adams, author of Anesthesia Drawing on a career launched in the first days of the specialty of emergency medicine, Dr. Paul Seward takes the reader with him into the ER in his riveting memoir. Told in fast–paced, stand–alone chapters that recall unforgettable medical cases, Patient Care offers the fascination of medical mysteries, wrapped in the drama of living and dying. A snap judgment about a child nearly kills him, and a priest who may be having a heart attack refuses treatment. An asthmatic man develops air bubbles in his shoulders, and a pharmacist is haunted by a decision he makes. But the book goes beyond these stories. Each chapter explores ethical questions that remind us of the full humanity of patients, nurses, coroners, pharmacists, and, of course, doctors. How do they care for strangers in their moments of crisis? How do they care for themselves? Dr. Seward rejects doctor–as–God narratives to write frankly about moments of failure, and champions the role of his colleagues in health care. And, for all the moral dilemmas here, there is plenty of wit and humor, too. (See the patient who punches our doctor.) Readers of Patient Care will find themselves thinking along with Dr. Seward: “What is the right thing to do? What would I do?”

Book excerpt: America’s health care delivery system is in disarray. Politicians on both sides of the aisle believe that they have the answer. But, fixing this problem does not lend itself to a political solution. Ultimately a meaningful solution is one that only physicians can offer. This is as it should be, but it is not happening. This book is my attempt to recast my journey in medicine as one that I believe has isolated the problem and found a solution. It begins with my observations in medical school, my fledgling attempt to be a good doctor, and ultimately my discovery of the problem and its solution. There is no question but we have the most marvelous and sophisticated health care system in the world, but our patient outcomes leave much to be desired when compared with those of other industrialized countries. Our rising health care expenditures, the asymmetry in the delivery of our health care system, and the calcified ideology of both the political right and left are sources of concern. I have attempted to share my insight with our citizenry in hopes that a concerted voice will be forthcoming demanding those changes from the health care industry that it and the government have been unable to accomplish. Without these changes a political solution will win out and mediocrity will replace quality. Time is short. Both political parties are sparring in an effort to imprint their ideology on a roadmap ostensibly designed to fix the problem, but one that does not come close to dealing with the salient issue. The strength inherent in a unified voice of the people will galvanize the industry and my hope is that this book will serve as a stimulus.
