Book excerpt: In Baghdad, Iraq, in 1939, nine-year-old Heskel Haddad, then the most fervent of Iraqi nationalists, first heard a fellow Iraqi call him "lousy Jew." Iraq, which for centuries was called Babylon, housed the world's oldest continuing Jewish community, largely concentrated in the capital city of Baghdad. By the late 1930's spurred by pro-Nazi elements, the Arab community had become increasingly anti-Semitic. On the eve of the holy day of Shuvuot, small roving bands of M'silmin killed 900 Jews in Baghdad, among them Heskel Haddad's cousin, his closest friend, who had been stabbed in the back and left to die in slow agony. Heskel Haddad swore the solemn oath to avenge his cousin, and began to organize an underground movement to protect his fellow Jews from further slaughter. As conditions worsened in Iraq, more and more Jews dreamed of escaping to Israel, but attempts to flee through Syria and Trans-Jordan meant death in the desert or at the hands of the Bedouin. The only way out was into neighboring Persia, now called Iran. Between 1948 and 1950, the Underground led 20,000 Jews to safety. An anonymous informer put Haddad on the "wanted list," and eventually Haddad was forced to leave Iraq forever. After a grueling journey through the desert into Iran, Haddad was forced to leave Iraq forever. After a grueling journey through the desert into Iran, Haddad arrived in Israel, where he was reunited with his family, which had left Iraq penniless as a result of the mass expulsion of Jews. Born in Baghdad is a gripping, richly atmospheric book about exotic lands poised between ancient tradition and modern change--and about the human values that must ultimately transcend both.

Book excerpt: Therapeutic Residential Care For Children and Youth takes a fresh look at therapeutic residential care as a powerful intervention in working with the most troubled children who need intensive support. Featuring contributions from distinguished international contributors, it critically examines current research and innovative practice and addresses the key questions: how does it work, what are its critical “active ingredients” and does it represent value for money? The book covers a broad spectrum of established and emerging approaches pioneered around with world, with contributors from the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Spain, Australia, Israel and the UK offering a mix of practice and research exemplars. The book also looks at the research relating to critical issues for child welfare service providers: the best time to refer children to residential care, how children can be helped to make the transition into care, the characteristics of children entering and exiting care, strategies for engaging families as partners, how the substantial cost of providing intensive is best measured against outcomes, and what research and development challenges will allow therapeutic residential care to be rigorously compared with its evidence-based community-centered alternatives. Importantly, the volume also outlines how to set up and implement intensive child welfare services, considering how transferable they are, how to measure success and value for money, and the training protocols and staffing needed to ensure that a programme is effective. This comprehensive volume will enable child welfare professionals, researchers and policymakers to develop a refined understanding of the potential of therapeutic residential care, and to identify the highest and best uses of this intensive and specialized intervention.

Book excerpt: "This volume addresses the question of how societies with developed welfare and social service systems are assessing current needs and future directions in their residential child and youth care sectors. This includes dealing with the historical concerns raised about the placement of children and youth in residential care settings as well as identifying innovative strategies, which offer new pathways for the integration of this often neglected area of service with families and communities. This review builds on an emergent and growing literature of cross-national child welfare policies and practices including child protection arrangements (Gilbert et al., 2011) and meeting the needs of migrant children (Skivenes et al., 2014). Our contributors share a common child welfare goal of seeking to ensure healthy growth and development for children served in order to achieve desired social outcomes for the community at large. Each of the sixteen countries selected for inclusion will be viewed through a common template including the policy context (historical developments, key trends and policy initiatives), promising programmatic innovations, and information obtained from a matrix developed in an earlier research effort (Erasmus+ Project) by Sigrid James and colleagues from five European countries (James et al., 2021). The Erasmus+ project, along with the matrix and rationale for its use, is described in detail in Chapter 3"--

The information in this edition will support a general pediatrician’s understanding of recently developed diagnostic and therapeutic tools--for instance, techniques for the assessment of transfusional iron overload in chronically transfused patients – resulting in better surveillance of medication side effects and improved support for patients who are prescribed with complex chelation regimens. New, improved therapeutic approaches to treatment of children with venous thromboembolic disease have recently been introduced; affected patients often require close monitoring in their communities through the general pediatrician whose practice will be enhanced by information that has been prepared by pediatric specialists with pediatric patients in mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of courtesans and slave girls in the medieval Arab world transcends traditional boundaries of study and opens up new fields of sociological and cultural enquiry. In the process it offers a remarkably rich source of historical and cultural information on medieval Islam. 'The Slave Girls of Baghdad' explores the origins, education and art of the 'qiyan' - indentured girls and women who entertained and entranced the caliphs and aristocrats who worked the labyinths of power throughout the Abbasid Empire. In a detailed analysis of Islamic law, historical sources and poetry, F. Matthew Caswell examines the qiyans' unique place in the society of ninth-century Baghdad, providing an insightful and comprehensive cultural overview of an elusive and little understood institution. This important history will be essential reading for all those concerned with the history of slavery and its morality, culture and importance in the early Islamic era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of theatre plays on different themes. Stefan is the dramatisation of a notorious miscarriage of justice in which Stefan Kiszko served 16 years in prison after he was wrongly convicted of the assault and murder of an eleven-year old girl. The protagonist is his mother Charlotte, a working class immigrant widow; she waged a one woman campaign to secure the freedom of her only son which eventually came about when it was forensically established that he could not have committed the offences. May Day New is a political satire, the events taking place in the period immediately before the May 1997 election of the first ‘New Labour’ administration under Tony Blair.La Mort De Roland is a one act play featuring three actors of whom only one is heard to speak, another responds inwardly while the third remains silent throughout. The dialogue is overlaid by an ambiguity that remains unresolved to the very end of the play. The Garden is a tragedy in which the protagonist, a traditional trades union official, is seen holding doggedly to his ideals in the face of the tide of changes swirling around him, and struggling at the same time to resolve inner contradictions. He is brought down by inflexibility and a single lapse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of the Arab Streets is a collection of ‘popular’ Arab saws and epithets, with an introduction dealing with the relationship between the classical and the demotic forms of Arabic, and the social, cultural and political consequences of that relationship – as well as the attempt to combine them as illustrated by a review of the colloquial poetical Dīwān of ‘Abbūd al-Karkhī. Mullā ‘Abbūd al-Karkhī was born in Baghdad in 1861. Known as a poet of the common man he produced a large volume of poetry, which was published in four volumes between 1933 and 1938 and is a historical record in colloquial verse of the political, social and cultural conditions of Iraqi society during the early days of the country’s emergence as a state after the First World War – first under British mandate, then as a modern constitutional monarchy which, while it had gained its independence, remained under the tutelage of Britain. The Dīwān is also a treasure house of the Baghdadi language of the street, and of the saws, epithets, proverbs and epigrams used by the common man to express hopes and desires, wants and hardships, criticisms and discontents, the whole distinguishable by being both colloquial and in verse. F. Matthew Caswell’s work explores ‘Abbūd al-Karkhī’s work and is of academic and general interest. It should be essential reading for students of Arabic as well as those engaged in Arabic and Middle Eastern studies. It is also readable, entertaining and would engage the interest of the general reader.
