Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Books and Cities This rambling hotchpotch of irresponsible comment was conceived in sin and grew (to its present state of deformity) without benefit of any discipline whatever. It has known no home but the hotels the street, and the smoking-car; no parent but a wastrel and a vagabond. That the culprit stands before you a monstrosity in essay form is small wonder. That it will come to any good in the world is hardly problematical. Upon its appearance in the pages of The Bookman the author of its being (for reasons best known to himself) sought to conceal his identity under the alias of Murray Hill. I said I was afraid that, as I was only born on the day of the Reform Bill passing, I should not be considered as a qualified authority. I do, however, recollect a long long way back, and have seen many men and many changes, which are here reproduced as answers to questions some times put to me by the younger generations. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traits of Travel, or Tales of Men and Cities Airman of what is intended to be (like the present volumes) light reading, are sometimes temptel to make prefatory acknowledgments that illness and other de pressing circumstances have attended the progress of their work. I doubt the policy of this plan either in propitiating the critic or in interesting the public. It is very questionable whether the state of mind or body ia uences the pen when it is able to move at all. Many a farce has been composed 'in moods of hypochondria, and the deepest tragedies have often been the produc tions of the merriest fellows. But even admitting the contrary of my theorems, the captions reader is too fond of his privilege of finding faults, to receive a warn ing that he is to meet with them at every turn; while the most tolerant must be prejudiced against an c 'ort to amuse, prefaced by a desponding face or a suit of mourning. The better way is, surely, to let readers be cheerful and contented while they may. On this prin ciple, I hope mine will believe that the following pages were written in high health, high fortune, and spirits. With a friendly few, who may find reason to imagine the contrary, I have little fear of its doing any mischief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Home City The west is growing fast, and there is room for our new town, and an excellent chance for growth. Finer villages, towns, and cities than any on the map will yet be built in the United States. This does not mean larger. While still keeping close to practical enactments we may yet take the best from other cities in the way of good government. It is easier to build a new house than to remodel an old one; and 'better to start out living under good laws than to struggle for their introduction afterwards. There is plenty of unknown ability to design and build a model municipality. Engineers, architects, landscape men, electricians - all the wonder workers who have given us of their best in many fields can join in this city, and not only make a career for themselves, but a contribution to American progress. We do not need the old established men. They would charge us two dollars for doing the work, and three for their reputation. Those with a living to make, men and women in search of a new home, will be our chosen ones. One of the essential beliefs of a real democracy is that there is always plenty Of un discovered talent ready to do any kind of work about as well as those who are already famous. We have seer) many beautiful expositions since the best one at Chicago. There have been Buffalo, Omaha, St. Louis, Portland, Jamestown, Seattle, and soon there will be one at San Francisco; but their beauties have been only for a season. Our architects and engineers can design a miniature exposition that will be permanent, and that will ever grow better looking. By planning in advance each new feature can be added when the time comes, when the money is ready, when the people say, Yes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, Cities and Events Twenty-nine years have elapsed since I first took journalistic service, and was told off for special duty "in foreign parts." It has been written that poets are "born," not made; which I take to mean that the poetic faculty is a natural gift, not an artificial acquirement. This statement may be true; indeed, the presumption is in favour of its correctness, for it emanated from a poet, who " ought to know." No journalist, however, to the best of my remembrance and belief, has ever ventured to pronounce the nascitur, non fit theory as being applicable to members of his own profession.
