Le français est une langue opaque dont l'orthographe ne respecte pas la correspondance graphème phonème, et dont la particularité est de contenir de nombreuses lettres muettes. Des études ont montré un traitement particulier pour celles-ci, car même si elles ne permettent pas une correspondance graphème phonème stricte, elles mettent en jeu des connaissances orthographiques implicites faisant appel à la morphologie de la langue et à la fréquence d'apparition des séquences de lettres (bigrammes). La présente étude a pour but de montrer quel rôle jouent ces connaissances orthographiques implicites dans la mémorisation de nouvelles formes orthographiques. Cette recherche, menée chez des enfants de CM2, se base sur la théorie de l'auto-apprentissage de l'orthographe par la voie phonologique. La présence de lettres muettes empêchant la correspondance graphème phonème stricte, influence l'apprentissage des formes orthographiques proposées dans l'étude. Les résultats suggèrent qu'un auto-apprentissage orthographique par le décodage phonologique est possible en français. Toutefois, l'apprentissage est modulé par le fait que les enfants s'appuient sur la fréquence d'apparition des bigrammes dans la langue pour orthographier de nouveaux mots, en particulier quand ils contiennent des lettres muettes.

Book excerpt: Cette étude présente un protocole de mise en relief des irrégularités orthographiques dont l'objectif est d'aider les enfants à mémoriser l'orthographe des lettres finales muettes. Nous avons proposé à des élèves de CE2 (n = 44) et de CM1 (n = 53) une liste de 57 mots : des items sans lettre finale muette, des items avec une lettre muette fréquente et des items avec une lettre muette rare, ainsi que 10 items tampons se finissant par une consonne prononcée. Après une dictée préalable, les enfants ont eu à copier l'ensemble des mots avec ou sans mise en relief de la fin du mot (entourer et copier la dernière syllabe en rouge). Les résultats ont montré une progression plus importante entre le pré-test et le post-test lorsque les items avaient été mis en relief que lorsqu'ils avaient été simplement copiés, de façon significative pour l'orthographe des mots entiers et tendancielle pour l'orthographe de la dernière syllabe uniquement. Cependant, contrairement à ce que l'on aurait pu croire, l'effet de l'entraînement n'a pas été supérieur pour les items présentant une lettre muette rare que pour ceux ayant une lettre muette fréquente. De plus, l'intervention a diminué le nombre d'erreurs d'omissions au profit des erreurs de substitution, montrant que la mise en relief avait attiré l'attention des élèves sur les formes finales des mots. Ces résultats sont en faveur de l'efficacité d'un entraînement de ce type, mais souligne également la solidité des régularités graphotactiques. Un entrainement plus long et avec plusieurs présentations des mots avec mise en relief pourrait permettre de montrer des effets plus importants sur les graphies finales rares. Néanmoins cette recherche montre que la saillance est une piste intéressante pour travailler sur les difficultés graphotactiques, en orthophonie comme dans le système scolaire

Les inconsistances entre les configurations sonores et leur production orthographique sont nombreuses. Elles concernent notamment les consonnes qui peuvent être présentées en format simple ou double. Selon l'hypothèse de l'auto-apprentissage formulée par Share en 1995, le décodage est la procédure qui permet la formation des représentations orthographiques car elle sollicite l'attention des enfants sur l'identité et l'ordre des lettres. Cela suppose que la structuration du stock orthographique se fait lorsque l'enfant identifie les formes orthographiques non familières rencontrées au cours de la lecture de tous les jours, et indépendamment de l'enseignement explicite de l'orthographe. Ce mémoire a étudié le rôle du décodage phonologique dans la mémorisation des doublements de consonnes.Nous avons observé l'apprentissage orthographique de huit pseudo-mots lus à haute voix par des élèves de CM2. Certains pseudo-mots contenaient des doublements de consonnes fréquents et d'autres contenaient de doublements rares. Les résultats de l'expérience avec un groupe de 60 enfants tout-venant mettent en évidence un auto-apprentissage des pseudo-mots, avec un effet de la fréquence du doublement de consonnes sur la mémorisation de ces items. Les résultats d'un groupe d'enfants dysorthographiques révèlent un auto-apprentissage plus faible et une sensibilité amoindrie à la fréquence du doublement de consonnes.
