Book excerpt: Advance praise for Memories of the Beach: "Lorraine O’Donnell Williams has given us a charming and evocative memoir of the Beach district six or seven decades ago, when it was a separate world in the southeast corner of Toronto. Everyone who knew the Beach that was, and everyone who knows the Beach of today, will enjoy her account of growing up in that special place." – Robert Fulford, author of Accidental City: The Transformation of Toronto "In this richly rendered memoir of a Catholic girl growing up in Toronto’s Beach community in the 1930s and 1940s, Lorraine Williams not only vividly captures the feeling of a more innocent age, but at the same time touches on a universal truth – that the place in which we are nurtured forms an integral part of the person we become. Simply wonderful." – Michael Bedard, author of the Governor General Award-winning Redwork In this rare combination of history and memoir, Lorraine O’Donnell Williams details life within Toronto’s Beach community in the 1930s and ’40s from the vantage point of her front verandah, which abutted the boardwalk. Her extensive research has uncovered numerous hidden facets of the heritage of this exceptional neighbourhood, including the stories of what was in its time one of North America’s most remarkable amusement parks, the popular dance hall, and how the area was transformed from cottage to urban living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autobiography is a kaleidoscope of a person’s life. This memoir is no different because it offers the reader insights into Bryan Hogan’s family origins, early farming life, the religious observance of his family, the life of the communities in which he lived and any number of anecdotes and stories that make for a most engaging tale. Every stage of his ‘journey’, as he likes to call it, is marked with a keen sense of observation regarding human nature – including his own foibles – and the vagaries of life. He is impacted by tragedies that beset his family and the local communities, but never falters in a positive outlook: ‘a man can find joy and peace wherever he is born.’ Although the story is a continuous tale of the author’s family adventures, travels and passage through life, it is possible to delve into any section and enjoy a thought-provoking read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An exceptional book that should make an immediately positive impact on the study of Irish Americans in the Civil War.” —The Journal of Southern History Drawing on records of about 5,500 soldiers and veterans, Shades of Green traces the organization of Irish regiments from the perspective of local communities in Connecticut, Illinois, and Wisconsin and the relationships between soldiers and the home front. Research on the impact of the Civil War on Irish Americans has traditionally fallen into one of two tracks, arguing that the Civil War either further alienated Irish immigrants from American society or that military service in defense of the Union offered these men a means of assimilation. In this study of Irish American service, Ryan W. Keating argues that neither paradigm really holds, because many Irish Americans during this time already considered themselves to be assimilated members of American society. This comprehensive study argues that the local community was often more important to ethnic soldiers than the imagined ethnic community, especially in terms of political, social, and economic relationships. An analysis of the Civil War era from this perspective provides a much clearer understanding of immigrant place and identity during the nineteenth century. The author focuses on three regiments not traditionally studied—rather than those of New York City and Boston—and supports his argument through advanced quantitative analysis of military service records and a wealth of raw data, an unusual and exciting development in Civil War studies. Shades of Green’s impressive research provides a significant contribution to scholarship sure to bring something valuable to several fields of study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his enthusiastic explorations and fervent writing, Michael J. Yochim "was to Yellowstone what Muir was to Yosemite. . . . Other times, his writing is like that of Edward Abbey, full of passion for the natural world and anger at those who are abusing it," writes foreword contributor William R. Lowry. In 2013 Yochim was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). While fighting the disease, he wrote Requiem for America's Best Idea. The book establishes a unique parallel between Yochim's personal struggle with a terminal illness and the impact climate change is having on the national parks--the treasured wilderness that he loved and to which he dedicated his life. Yochim explains how climate change is already impacting the vegetation, wildlife, and the natural conditions in Olympic, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yellowstone, and Yosemite National Parks. A poignant and thought-provoking work, Requiem for America's Best Idea investigates the interactions between people and nature and the world that can inspire and destroy them.
