CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH It has occurred to me that some reminiscences of a long life would be of interest to my family and friends. My memory goes back for more than eighty years. I recall distinctly when about five years old my mother took me to the school of Mrs. Westbrook, wife of the well-known pastor of the Dutch Reformed church, who had a school in her house, within a few doors. The lady was a highly educated woman, and her husband, Doctor Westbrook, a man of letters as well as a preacher. He specialized in ancient history, and the interest he aroused in Roman and Greek culture and achievements has continued with me ever since. The village of Peekskill at that time had between two and three thousand inhabitants. Its people were nearly all Revolutionary families who had settled there in colonial times. There had been very little immigration either from other States or abroad; acquaintance was universal, and in the activities of the churches there was general co-operation among the members. Church attendance was so unanimous that people, young or old, who failed to be in their accustomed places on Sunday felt the disapproval of the community. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Eighty Years: Autosketches, Random Notes and Reminiscences T has seemed to me desirable to perfect, so far as possi ble, the Genealogical Records of the Hollister and Chamberlin families, with which I am connected. To this end I have sought their records from various sources and recorded them at length in our Family Bible, a brief synopsis of which is here given. Of our English ancestors but little can be learned, from the fact that, by reason of the War of Independence, so alienated were the colonies from the mother country that few of our American families cared to maintain relationship with their kindred in England and were indifferent as to the records which might relate them to their ancestors. SO far as I have been able to connect our families with their antecedents the results are here briefly outlined. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes, Memories, and Travels of Eighty-Two Years: And Short Sketches of the Lanphear and Potter Families Soon the settlers organized a society for worship, and for a time held meetings from house to house, or in log schoolhouses, until they were able to build a meeting-house. I was brought up to attend church and read the Bible. The preaching was very plain. I remember the first sermon I heard. The preacher had no shoes to his feet, or coat to his back, yet revivals followed his preaching. Let me say right here that my father and another man by the name of David Stillman put their heads together and talked it over that the preacher ought to have some shoes. So after meeting, my father stepped out to the door, picked up a stick, and walking along by the side of the preacher, took up his foot and measured it. The next Sabbath the preacher had some shoes. Possibly one half of the men, and some of the women, came to church barefooted. I remember I went to church barefooted in warm weather until I was sixteen years old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Memories, 1842-1920 I had thought somewhat of it before, but probably it never would have been attempted, but for his let ter. Often, I said of my father, who lived to be eighty nine: With him were buried historical treasures of family and State, which would have been priceless if I had only had the patience to have gotten them from him. Now that I am growing old, perhaps I owe it to my children, my friends and my brethren, to delve into the nearly-forgotten things of the past and hand down to them historical data, they may appreciate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of Eighty Years: An Autobiography This little book tells the life story of a good man. It makes no pretension to literary finish. It is purely a record, simply phrased, of more than fifty years in the Christian ministry. The writer has been known through all these years as a man of real humbleness, great faith, deep devotion and tireless activity in the work of the Lord. His work has been abundantly blessed. The results of his consecrated service are not alone in the large number won to the faith of Jesus, in churches established, and in the care of the flock of God, but in the number of young men converted under his ministry, who became preachers of the gospel and successful winners of souls. Rarely has a minister a more striking record in this respect. The story furnishes some knowledge of religious conditions in earlier years in New Brunswick, and of the difficulties which confronted the servants of God. Incidents of great faith and of the triumphs of faith are numerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He called out: "Senator Depew, do you know that man going out?" I answered: "Yes, he is a colleague of mine in the Senate." "Well," he shouted, "he is a crook." His judgment subsequently proved correct.-from "Theodore Roosevelt"CHAUNCEY M. DEPEW (1834-1928) was, over the course of his long life, in the business of law, of the railroads, of politics... and of speechmaking. Whether he was heading up the New York Central Railroad as its president or serving the state of New York in the U.S. Senate (which he did from 1899 to 1911), Depew's deepest love was telling captivating stories to as many listeners as possible. He found his greatest audience with this wonderful 1921 book, a series of tales and reminiscences of his encounters with generals (Grant, Garfield), presidents (Lincoln, Roosevelt, and others), and giants of journalism, business, and entertainment. Graced with an abundance of wit and more than a dash of charm, Depew was a master storyteller, and his memories of eight tumultuous decades in the life of America are as uniquely insightful as they are grandly entertaining.
