Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following pages contain my memories of many years spent in the African bush, where I did little else than hunt game and study their habits and tracks. In 1906 my friend the late Major (then Captain) C. H. Stigand and myself brought out Central African Game and its Spoor, and then we both wrote further volumes on the game independently. I doubted whether I had enough material for another volume, but on looking up my diaries I found that there was quite a lot I had left unsaid. The first chapter deals with some of my experiences when tea-planting in Eastern India, but I had so little opportunity there to get really good sport that I think it best here to mainly confine my attention to Africa, where I had a glorious time Eastern India is so jungly that without the use of trained elephants it is impossible for a man to do much with the rifle. On the other hand, Central Africa is a country where anyone can get (or perhaps I should say could get) as much shooting as he wants if he is a good walker and able to rough it in a bad climate; for it is not a health resort. Naturally a hunter’s life in tropical Africa is not “roses all the way,” although there are wonderful compensations for the hardships and fevers

Book Synopsis African Adventure by : Denis D. Lyell
Download or read book African Adventure written by Denis D. Lyell and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS small volume contains some of the letters I have received during the last thirty years or more from well-known big-game hunters and field-naturalists, many of whom have now passed away. They were so interesting to me that I thought they might interest others who have shot in wilder Africa. Moreover, they describe conditions which are no longer possible considering the way many parts of that continent have been opened up since the Great War. Whether the spread of a so-called civilization is a good thing I do not wish to discuss, but I know there are many men, including myself, who would prefer the older times when things were less complicated and conventional. Many people are now going in for photography more than shooting, and in a way this is a good thing as it will naturally help to conserve the game. It is, however, a much less risky amusement to take animals’ pictures—I mean dangerous animals—than to try to kill them, for game such as lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros are seldom dangerous until they are wounded and followed up in thick cover. Some people may doubt this statement, but it is nevertheless true, as all experienced hunters can vouch.

Download or read book White Hunters written by Brian Herne and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brian Herne's White Hunters: The Golden Age of African Safaris is the story of seventy years of African adventure, danger, and romance. East Africa affects our imagination like few other places: the sight of a charging rhino goes directly to the heart; the limitless landscape of bony highlands, desert, and mountain is, as Isak Dinesen wrote, of "unequalled nobility." White Hunters re-creates the legendary big-game safaris led by Selous and Bell and the daring ventures of early hunters into unexplored territories, and brings to life such romantic figures as Cape-to-Cairo Grogan, who walked 4,000 miles for the love of a woman, and Dinesen's dashing lover, Denys Finch. Witnesses to the richest wildlife spectacle on the earth, these hunters were the first conservationists. Hard-drinking, infatuated with risk, and careless in love, they inspired Hemingway's stories and movies with Clark Gable and Gregory Peck.

Book excerpt: I am greeted by the petrifying sight of thirty or sixty or seventy buffalo looming large at a distance, each of them staring at me. Just staring would be okay; I could handle that. But these are also coming at me. I just stand there turned to stone, waiting for something to happensomething other, that is, than having a herd of cape buffalo running toward me. If it werent for Peter, they surely would have trampled me to death. Fortunately, he recollects himself just in time to yell at me to get my ass behind the tree. The tree. Hmm . . . What tree? I t takes a few seconds of scanning the land around me before I see Peter hugging a tree trunk not more than a foot in diameter. I get there in three gigantic leaps and with such verve that I knock Peter out from behind his tree. I yank him back, of course. Both of us are trying to be wafer thin (not an easy feat, that) so both of us can fit behind the tree. In less than four seconds, the buffalo storm past on either side of our measly cover. These hunting stories abound in thrills and merry moments yet remain truthful to life. The author invites the reader to an enchanted world where anything can happen around the next bush and where often a decision must be made in the blink of an eye. Each event described here becomes instantly tangible and sharply conveys the scents and colors, the sheer magic of the African wilderness. The photos stand as witness of the authors love and dedication to the African continent. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to experience the unrivalled spell of Africa. Book Synopsis Sunrise On The Zambezi by : Robert Berndt
Download or read book Sunrise On The Zambezi written by Robert Berndt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the following write up I have recreated my experiences and adventures covering safaris over a dozen year period ranging from the Cape to the Caprivi in discovering Africa . It's a story that tries to capture the feel of safari, the smells, the sounds, and sights one experiences in the African bush. Despite all the game taken and the travel to remote and exotic locations, it was the experiences, the adventure, and most of all the memories created by the journeys that were the real essence of what an African hunt is all about. Someone once suggested that I should write a book about my safari adventures and my love affair with Africa. Well, I have. I take you along on my hunting adventures and experiences, some serious and some humorous, ranging from a charging angry 12,000 pound elephant to a battle with a little 30 pound bullet proof sharpes grysbok. Those who have hunted in Africa have many memories of their own from safari. In the following I share my memories so that both the African safari veteran and someone who is still dreaming of going on safari can share in my hunting experiences and the memories I have collected. The book is not just about shooting but it’s about experiencing the feeling of hunting wild animals on their own turf, the unexpected events, and the dangers in the thick bush going face to face with a dangerous animal that can quickly turn the table making you the hunted, and to test yourself when a tough situation arises. But, most importantly, it’s about collecting memories.
