Book excerpt: Winner of the Michael Ramsay Prize 2016 Dementia is one of the most feared diseases in Western society today. Some have even gone so far as to suggest euthanasia as a solution to the perceived indignity of memory loss and the disorientation that accompanies it. Here, John Swinton develops a practical theology of dementia for caregivers, people with dementia, ministers, hospital chaplains, and medical practitioners as he explores two primary questions: • Who am I when I’ve forgotten who I am? • What does it mean to love God and be loved by God when I have forgotten who God is? Offering compassionate and carefully considered theological and pastoral responses to dementia and forgetfulness, Swinton’s Dementia redefines dementia in light of the transformative counter story that is the gospel.

In Spiritual Power in Motion, authors Ned Byron Pendergast and Lynne Pendergast Ferdon invite you to join them in writing down your own thoughts and ideas in this touching, heartfelt, and faithful collection of inspirational essays, poems, and reflections. Sharing their own quiet moments and meditations on such themes as emotion, healing, the majesty of creation, the character of our loving God, and more, Ned and Lynne express in words the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit in offering us daily revelations. God and his Holy Spirit are with us throughout this lifetime, and by taking time to listen for the Lord in prayer, we can hear, see, and feel this abiding presence each and every step on the way. But in order to hear Gods voice or words, we must also tell him of our need, be willing to listen, and have faith that our prayers are heard.

Book Synopsis Spirituality and Ageing by : Albert Jewell
Download or read book Spirituality and Ageing written by Albert Jewell and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituality and Ageing presents the experience of ageing as an opportunity for spiritual reflection and affirmation of life. The contributors are religious and spiritual leaders and ethical thinkers from a range of different backgrounds. They define 'spirituality' not just as a religious concept but as the fulfilment of the universal human need for purpose, values and relationships - a sense of wholeness in life. This spiritual dimension helps people face the emotional and psychological challenges of growing older, such as memory loss, dementia, bereavement and fear of death. Existing systems of social care often focus on the material and physical needs of older people; this collection proposes that the spiritual needs of older people are as vital a consideration for their welfare. Through their spirituality, older people can attain a fuller appreciation and understanding of life, which can also inform and enrich the lives of others.Spirituality and Ageing will be an invaluable resource to carers looking for a holistic and more reflective approach to work with older people.
Book Synopsis Preaching as Spiritual Leadership by : Michael E. Connors, CSC
Download or read book Preaching as Spiritual Leadership written by Michael E. Connors, CSC and published by Liturgy Training Publications. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique resource, Fr. Michael E. Connors, CSC, gathers and expertly guides the collective wisdom of experienced preachers and homilists to provide a unique resource that examines the preacher’s unique role as shepherd and a spiritual leader. The chapters will investigate these dual roles according to the roots of the Catholic spiritual tradition and provide practical advice for priests, deacons, seminarians in homiletics classes or preaching classes, retreat leaders, RCIA catechists—all who preach. Preaching as Spiritual Leadership provides solutions to the following questions: How is preaching embedded in the Church’s pastoral mission? What does it mean to be a shepherd and spiritual leader for others? How can a preacher flourish in the role of spiritual leader? How can we lead others into committed discipleship through preaching? To be a shepherd and spiritual leader, the preacher must be in some sense a mystic, who is filled with the Lord’s gracious presence, a presence to be shared with others. Homilists are a sacramental people, they must also be a mystagogues: ministers who can both lead the community’s ritual celebrations, and help the People of God to plunge into the liturgy with lively faith, to touch the holy realities behind them.

Book excerpt: Spiritual Dynamite addresses: “What are Christians and religious people going to do when God’s creation is replaced with algorithms?” Be stunned. When parents have done virtually everything right for their kids, many parents wonder why their children won’t carry forward the family religion or religious values to their children. Technology and social media have rewired human brains to dismiss the importance of religion. Spiritual Dynamite provides examples of trailblazing prayer and intention experiments. There are futuristic scenarios where artificial intelligence could be a tremendous godsend for mankind. You could also conceptually presume Divine Intelligence is the antipode of artificial intelligence. Our subconscious has its own cancel culture. People often talk themselves out of enjoying their memories of supernatural and intuitive moments. These moments are often followed by an internal canceling from memory of supernatural moments. The Quality of thoughts is upheld to be a prelude to a better society. You will find dynamite information in this book you won’t find anyplace else.

Book excerpt: A great master once said, “The shortest distance between a human being and truth is a story.” In Experiencing Spirituality, Ernest Kurtz and Katherine Ketcham take readers on a journey through storytelling as a means of self-discovery. Recounting and interpreting great wisdom stories from all ages and all cultures, as well as telling many of their own, the authors shed light on such experiences as awe, wonder, humor, confusion, and forgiveness. In story after story, seekers look to those whose lives reveal a special quality—sometimes called spirituality—and ask the masters what they must do to attain that same quality. The answer is simple: “Come, follow me, and see how I live.” Experiencing Spirituality teaches through the example of human experience.
Book Synopsis Good & Truth: The Art of Spiritual Balance by : Clayten Tylor
Download or read book Good & Truth: The Art of Spiritual Balance written by Clayten Tylor and published by Clayten Tylor. This book was released on 2023-08-06 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of love, hopefully includes romance, sex, and reciprocity. Yet, the archetypal idea of love, brings a greater-use into the love-act, and when that good-use gets developed within each of us as individuals, there is a greater chance of manifesting the outer riches we are seeking. The Archetypal idea of love has a higher use, besides manifesting in individuals as good-use. The goal is for it to build a permanent home in us. Yet, most times the body does not live a full life, or long enough to achieve it. An inner permanent home gets made from the affection of love in proportion that an individual dwells on it, and hopes for it. A good-use would be using the affection of archetypal love, to unite all levels of our being, and to begin a new relationship from within. Even the idea developed while you read this book is enough to attract the affections that cause our own spiritual regeneration. We are reaching into the archetypal world where it all began, looking to align ourselves inwardly spiritually, equally to the feelings of love and acceptance that we are seeking outwardly. Once we balance the inner with the outer, the polarity of the body shifts to the center, and the archetypal love as intuition restores our memory of what we truly are. In that memory of ourselves, a feeling radiates out from our body as big as the universe. The mind begins to understand concepts of archetypal love. We immediately comprehend that the more we enclose others in our affectionate love, the more the good-use can make a permanent home in our body. When the inner center strengthens, all mind-chatter ends. Every time we make ourselves feel as big as the universe, we are filled with the memory of the One Self. Yet, each time we bring ourselves back to thinking of ourselves in a body, we attract the pleasurable feeling of Conjugial love.
