That work had its origin in a Lecture delivered at the Schools, and was intended to create an interest in the history of the Parish, more particularly the Church, with a hope that the sacred edifice might be restored, as the fabric had fallen into a lamentable state of disrepair. The results of the efforts then made were soon apparent, for within a couple of years after the issue of the volume already named, the alterations and improvements therein suggested and advocated, were carried into effect in a manner which none, even of the most sanguine, would have ventured to expect. The restoration of the "Barn of Kent," to something like its pristine grandeur, appears to demand a second volume to complete our Parochial History. My Father, the Rev. F. F. Haslewood, Curate and Rector of Smarden for a Quarter of a Century, having had considerable experience in similar undertakings, again exhibited his untiring zeal and energy, and encouraged by the generous support of his Parishioners, boldly determined to repair and set in order, the fine old Church, of which he was ever proud. Whilst the work was in hand an opportunity was afforded me of carefully watching its progress. Notes by an eye witness of the Restoration may interest the present generation and prove useful hereafter.
