Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Somerset The object of the present volume is to provide a conspectus of the principal historical and archaeological interests of the country of Somerset These, however, are so rich and varied that the Editor has found it beyond his power to include between its covers all the attractive topics that might be treated. Still, the work, if not actually encyclopaedic, is fairly comprehensive, and its scope is certainly wider than that of any similar publication while it is far more authoritative. The different writers have attempted to deal with their subjects in a literary, as well as scientific, spirit. Nothing has been assumed that a person of good education may not be reasonably expected to know; and, conversely, as the writers, in most instances, are either well-known authorities or particularly acquainted with their respective subjects, it may be confidently anticipated that the results of their labours will be to a "make the bounds of knowledge wider yet," even for those residents possessing an antecedent familiarity with some of the topics. All the papers, with two exceptions, have been specially written for "Memorials of Old Somerset," and, conformably with the aim of the series, in a manner adapted to the cultivated general reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Devonshire The Editor takes this opportunity of rectifying two omissions in his preliminary sketch. Owing to some accident, he failed to refer to the defence of Dartmouth against the attack of Du Chastel in 1404. This event was memorable on account of the active part taken by the women, who, Amazon-like, hurled Hints and pebbles on the French, and thus expedited their retirement. The other omission concerns the abortive Cavalier rising of 1655. Penruddock and Groves, the leaders in the afiair (for which they suffered death at Exeter), were both Wiltshire men, but it is certainly interesting that an attempt which might have antedated the Restoration by five years was initiated by the proclamation of Charles II. At South Molton - a town of the county of which George Monk, to whom the Merry Monarch owed his crown, was a native. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bygone Somerset His volume is not a county history nor a county guide; but either directly or in cidentally it covers the history of all the principal places in Somerset. The object of the editor and his coadjutors has been to treat of antiquities and romance, rather than of events which, however important in their way, have no special interest for the general reader. Each chapter is complete in itself, but it will be found that where possible each follows the other in relative sequence. The plan adopted in previous volumes of the Bygone Series has been maintained in this, an effort being made to treat antiquarian subjects without recourse to technicalities, and to bring into as great pro minence as possible the romance associated with localities. At the same time it is hoped that no historic facts in connection with the county and people of Somerset have been wholly overlooked, and that the volume, if it achieves its main object of entertaining the general reader, will also be found not lacking in value to the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials, Vol. 1 In the evenings of the summer of 1885 my Father and I were much alone, my Mother having died in the April of that year, and he then told me more than I had before known of his own father and his early life; and when we went to Siena the following August, I asked him to write these recollections, that we might possess them. He took with him to Siena an accumulation of unsorted family letters, and in reading them and writing these Memorials he lived over again the life which made him. Beginning with his parents, he naturally passed on to his home, and in granting our request as to writing some record of his own life also, he could not write of himself apart from his brothers and sisters and friends, and, above all, from my Mother. For as he did not live for himself, so he did not live in himself; and as his heart was filled with the love of his people and his country, he could only write of himself as affected by these relationships.
