It is made Of Cape Ann granite from the quarries of Jonas French 85 Co., according to plans drawn by Daniel Wood bury of Boston, architect, who superintended its construction and erection. The die is Six feet in height, with Slightly inclining sides, its top measuring three feet four inches square and its bottom four feet, and weighs seven tons. The base is seven feet square and the sub - base ten feet. The whole struc ture rests apparently upon a grass - covered mound, slightly raised above the general level of the ground about it, while having a substantial and durable foundation underneath. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial of Adin Ballou: Containing a Biographical Sketch, Some Account of the Funeral Services, Tributes From Friends, and Condensed Notices of the Public Press, Also a Sermon Written by Himself to Be Read at His Own Funeral "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright." "They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever." "When the ear heard me then it blessed me, and when the eye saw me it gave witness unto me. Because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless and him that had no helper. The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. I was eyes to the blind and feet was I to the lame; I was a father to the poor, and the cause I knew not I searched out." "The memorial of virtue is immortal, because it is known with God and with men. While it is present men take example of it, and when it is gone they earnestly desire it. It weareth a crown, and triumpheth forever." "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven." "The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance." Book excerpt: 2019 marked notable anniversaries for two of the most widely recognised icons of the philosophy of nonviolence, representing seventy years since the birth of Dr Martin Luther King Jr and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. Both brought significant, constructive, and far-reaching social and political change to the world. This volume offers an innovative perspective, placing them, their beliefs and theories within the chronology of the tradition of nonviolence, beginning with Lev Nikolaevicz Tolstoy and encompassing the likes of Óscar Romero, Nelson Mandela, Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan. This collection of essays explores diverse understandings of the concepts of nonviolence in a philosophical and religious context. It also highlights the application of the techniques of nonviolence in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: This book is offered for consideration and critical reflection primarily by political science scholars throughout the world from beginning students to professors emeriti. Neither age nor erudition seems to make much difference in the prevailing assumption that killing is an inescapable part of the human condition that must be accepted in political theory and practice. It is hoped that readers will join in questioning this assumption and will contribute further stepping stones of thought and action toward a nonkilling global future.
