Book Synopsis Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights by : Bychawska-Siniarska, Dominika
Download or read book Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights written by Bychawska-Siniarska, Dominika and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Convention on Human Rights – Article 10 – Freedom of expression 1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises. 2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary. In the context of an effective democracy and respect for human rights mentioned in the Preamble to the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of expression is not only important in its own right, but it also plays a central part in the protection of other rights under the Convention. Without a broad guarantee of the right to freedom of expression protected by independent and impartial courts, there is no free country, there is no democracy. This general proposition is undeniable. This handbook is a practical tool for legal professionals from Council of Europe member states who wish to strengthen their skills in applying the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in their daily work.

Book Synopsis The Jewish Leaderships in Slovakia and Hungary During the Holocaust Era by : Ruth Landau
Download or read book The Jewish Leaderships in Slovakia and Hungary During the Holocaust Era written by Ruth Landau and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the established narratives surrounding the Holocaust. The focus of this book is the comparative study of the history of two Jewish communities in Central Europe, Slovakia and Hungary, during the Holocaust. The study reveals that, although the Jews of Slovakia and Hungary expected to receive reliable information from their leaders regarding how to behave in view of the Nazis’ decrees, they were deported to the extermination camps without knowing where the journey would take them. In the spring of 1944, the Jewish leaders in both countries were fully informed about Auschwitz-Birkenau. Yet, they kept silent in order not to “create panic,” and did not warn the Jewish people of the impending disaster. Estimates suggest that 83% of Slovakia’s Jews, and 65% of Hungary’s Jews perished in the Holocaust. Almost all the Jewish leaders in these two countries survived the Holocaust. The study further shows that, although one of the leaders, Dr. Rudolf Kasztner, saved 1,684 Jews on the ‘Kasztner Train’, not only did he not share the information in his possession regarding the final destination of the deportees to Auschwitz, but he also disseminated false information in Cluj, the town where he was born. His desire to help German Nazi war criminals, by giving them favorable character evidence at the Nuremberg trials, remains a mystery to this day.
Book Synopsis Secret Agents and the Memory of Everyday Collaboration in Communist Eastern Europe by : Péter Apor
Download or read book Secret Agents and the Memory of Everyday Collaboration in Communist Eastern Europe written by Péter Apor and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of essays in Secret Agents and the Memory of Everyday Collaboration in Communist Eastern Europe addresses institutions that develop the concept of collaboration, and examines the function, social representation and history of secret police archives and institutes of national memory that create these histories of collaboration. The essays provide a comparative account of collaboration/participation across differing categories of collaborators and different social milieux throughout East-Central Europe. They also demonstrate how secret police files can be used to produce more subtle social and cultural histories of the socialist dictatorships. By interrogating the ways in which post-socialist cultures produce the idea of, and knowledge about, “collaborators,” the contributing authors provide a nuanced historical conception of “collaboration,” expanding the concept toward broader frameworks of cooperation and political participation to facilitate a better understanding of Eastern European communist regimes.

This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Rights, State Sovereignty and Medical Ethics: Examining Struggles Around Coercive Sterilisation of Romani Women examines the mobilized use by people and groups of the international human rights law framework to move legal, policy and ultimately social change at national and local level. One particular case study is examined in detail: efforts by Romani women in the Czech Republic and Slovakia to secure legal remedy for coercive sterilization. International legal aspects of these cases are examined in detail. The book concludes by endeavouring to answer questions concerning the nature of international law and the evolution of the post-World War II international human rights framework, the structure of national sovereignty, and the potential impact of both on human autonomy.
