This year s report covers 3 additional economies, bringing the total number of economies covered to 181. Now included are the Bahamas, Bahrain, and Qatar. The report also adds a preface on Doing Business methodology, as well as in-depth analysis throughout the report on the main trends and findings of the past six years of Doing Business. Doing Business is an invaluable resource for entrepreneurs, investors, advisors, academics, professionals, and policymakers. The indicators benchmark regulation across 10 areas of a typical business lifecycle, and are used to analyze economic and social outcomes that matter such as equal opportunity, unemployment, poverty, and growth. Download or read book Doing Business in 2005 written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Business in 2005: Obstacles to Growth is the second in a series of annual reports investigating the scope and manner of regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it. New quantitative indicators on business regulations and their enforcement can be compared across more than 130 countries, and over time. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms have worked, where and why. Topics in Doing Business in 2005 include: Licensing and Inspections: Having registered a business, now what? In most countries, firms face a myriad of sector specific licenses as well as inspections to enforce compliance. The Doing Business database constructs two sets of indicators on the regulation of operations. One measures the steps, time and costs of complying with licensing and permit requirements for ongoing. The other assesses the enforcement of regulations through two of the most common types of inspections-labor and tax. Registering Property: Property registries were first developed to help raise tax revenue. What was good for the tax authorities has since proven to be good for strengthening property rights-the registries strengthen incentives to invest, facilitate trade, and expand access to credit. New indicators cover the steps, time and cost to register property. Measures of the legal provisions that strengthen property rights and the efficiency of property registries are also developed. Protecting Investors: Corporate governance issues are often thought to affect only publicly listed companies in developed countries. In fact, corporate governance is relevant for every large privately held company that has more than one owner. New indicators examine several possible types of shareholder expropriation, including related-party transactions, guarantees and loans to company managers and directors, mergers and acquisitions, disclosure of ownership information, and treatment of conflicts of interest. Including a new emphasis on gender, Doing Business not only provides insights into business constraints throughout the world but highlights particular barriers faced by women. Doing Business is a comprehensive resource that no investor, economic adviser, business developer, or economic policymaker should be without.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides empirical evidence on the determinants of long-term growth performance in a sample of 55 developing countries grouped by income levels. The evidence indicates that a model incorporating the savings rate, export performance, expenditures on human capital development, the growth of population, and the real interest rate on external debt, explains the growth performance of these countries remarkably well. The model also suggests policies that would lead to higher long-run rates of growth.
Book Synopsis A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture by : Dr Elie G Haddad
Download or read book A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture written by Dr Elie G Haddad and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-03-28 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive, critical overview of the developments in architecture from 1960 to 2010. The first section provides a presentation of major movements in architecture after 1960, and the second, a geographic survey that covers a wide range of territories around the world. This book not only reflects the different perspectives of its various authors, but also charts a middle course between the 'aesthetic' histories that examine architecture solely in terms of its formal aspects, and the more 'ideological' histories that subject it to a critique that often skirts the discussion of its formal aspects.
Download or read book Moderns Abroad written by Mia Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume studies the architecture and urbanism of modern-era Italian colonialism (1869-1943) as it sought to build colonies in North and East Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Mia Fuller follows, not only the design of the physical architecture, but also the development of colonial design theory, based on the assumptions made about the colonized, and also the application of modernist theory to both Italian architecture and that of its colonies. Moderns Abroad is the first book to present an overview of Italian colonial architecture and city planning. In chronicling Italian architects' attempts to define a distinctly Italian colonial architecture that would set Italy apart from Britain and France, it provides a uniquely comparative study of Italian colonialism and architecture that will be of interest to specialists in modern architecture, colonial studies, and Italian studies alike.

Book Synopsis The Battle for Modernism by : David Rifkind
Download or read book The Battle for Modernism written by David Rifkind and published by Marsilio. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The other side of twentieth-century architectural history in Italy and Europe. The short-lived cultural journal Quadrante transformed the practice of architecture in fascist Italy. Over the course of three years (1933-36), the magazine agitated for an "architecture of the state" that would represent the values and aspirations of the fascist regime, and in so doing it changed the language with which architcts and their clientele addressed the built environment. Quadrante rallied supporters and organized the most prominent practitioners and benefactors of Italian rationalism into a coherent movement that advanced the cause of specific currents of modern architecture in interwar Italy. Through a detailed study of Quadrante and its circle of architects, critics, artists, and patrons, the book investigates the relationship between modern architecture and fascist political practices in Italy during Benito Mussolini's regime (1922-1943).
