Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Fox Having been asked by my friend, the Editor of this series, to write the life of George Fox, I have completed the work to the best of my ability, though I am aware of the disadvantage under which I labour in not having for some years made that period a subject of special study. The reader will no doubt perceive that I am myself a member of the Society of Friends, to which my ancestors have belonged since its first foundation by George Fox; but I trust that this fact has not caused me to swerve from that absolute fidelity of portraiture which ought to be the aim of every biographer. There are some lines in the portrait which, out of love to Fox's memory, I would gladly have omitted; but loyalty to the Truth, which has ever been the watch word of the Society of Friends, forbade me to do so. Only I may repeat a remark which has been often made, that his faults (especially his polemic bitterness) were, for the most part, faults characteristic of his age, while his nobler qualities, his courage, his conscientious ness, and his intense love of truth, were emphatically his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personality of George Fox IN the sketch that follows, readers will find a picture of George Fox which satisfies the requirements of Cromwell's famous direction with regard to his own portrait. If we do not exactly see Fox warts and all, we do become acquainted with him in his rugged vigour and homespun simplicity as we read some of those illuminating touches found in the original sources which of late years have been opened up. Even those who are already familiar with the life and work of Fox can hardly fail to gain from this sketch some fresh and Vivid impression of his Vigorous personality. Those who have not previously studied his character will find these pages a_better avenue to a close acquaintance with him than' most extant lives provide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of George Fox The "Great Leaders' Lives" aims to meet the needs of moral and religious secondary education. Adolescence is pre-eminently the period of Idealism. The naive obedience to authority characteristic of childhood is to a large extent supplanted at this time by self-initiative; - by self-determination in accordance with ideals adopted or framed by the individual himself. Furthermore, the ideals of this period are concrete rather than abstract. They are embodied in individual lives, and, generally, in lives of action. Hence biographies of great leaders appeal strongly to the adolescent. They furnish examples and stimulus for conduct along the higher lines. The "Great Leaders' Lives" will include a large number of volumes devoted to the study of some of the greatest moral and spiritual leaders of the race. Although designed primarily for use in the class-room, they will serve admirably the purposes of a general course of reading in biography for youth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1957, The English Woman in History displays the place women have held and the influence they have exerted within the changing pattern of English society. Ever since the days of Queen Elizabeth I the position of women in English society has been a matter of general debate. In the seventeenth century many men produced books in praise of women, following the example of Thomas Heywood. Most of these books were devoted to the praises of individual women, but their authors generally produced arguments against subjection of all women to the unthinking dominance of men. While married women were still legally subject to their husbands and no women were allowed to take part in public affairs it was impossible to write objectively about women’s place in the world. The women who at the end of the seventeenth century began to write were generally fired by a sense of injustice, and men tended to write condescendingly of charm and beauty, which interested them more than intelligence and wit. Now that women are bearing public responsibilities with success it is possible for historians to look back dispassionately over the centuries and trace the stages by which this position has been won. It is a survey of this nature which Lady Stenton has attempted in this book. This is a must read for students and scholars of women’s history, gender studies and women’s movement.
