Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Harvard Dead in the War Against Germany, Vol. 1 In this first volume of Memoirs of the Harvard Dead only those thirty men are included whose deaths occurred before the United States entered the European War, April 6, 1917. They were The Vanguard, the men who sealed with their blood the pledge of that overwhelming senti ment in favor of the Allies which in time was to make our country an active participant in the fight. They deserve a volume to themselves. Those who give their all before any thing is asked must be held in separate remembrance and gratitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Field of Honor: A Collection of War Letters and Reminiscences of Three Harvard Undergraduates Who Gave Their Lives in the Great Cause Larry returned to the division just before we started the push on the 96th of September in the Argonne. It was mighty rough sledding, but we managed to keep the Hun on the go toward the rear. On the ninth day out, Larry and I were holding a position along a sunken road just beyond Apremont our men huddling together in the same little fox holes. About noon Larry had an order to move his men forward and occupy an outpost about five hundred yards to the flank and front. W e parted with the expectation of seeing each other in a day or so at most. That night the Boche kept us under a continual bombardment of gas-shells which there was no escaping, and the surgeon ordered many of my company evacuated to hospitals in the rear for treatment. I was sent to Bor deaux, and while there had several letters from Larry and was very glad to hear that he came through the drive untouched. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Marshall was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. He drafted this manuscript while he was in Washington, D.C., between 1919 and 1924 as aide-de-camp to General of the Armies John J. Pershing. However, given the growing bitterness of the "memoirs wars" of the period he decided against publication, and the draft sat unused until the 1970s when Marshall's step-daughter and her husband decided to publish it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1898 the American Regular Army was a small frontier constabulary engaged in skirmishes with Indians and protesting workers. Forty-three years later, in 1941, it was a large modern army ready to wage global war against the Germans and the Japanese. In this definitive social history of America's standing army, military historian Edward Coffman tells how that critical transformation was accomplished. Coffman has spent years immersed in the official records, personal papers, memoirs, and biographies of regular army men, including such famous leaders as George Marshall, George Patton, and Douglas MacArthur. He weaves their stories, and those of others he has interviewed, into the story of an army which grew from a small community of posts in China and the Philippines to a highly effective mechanized ground and air force. During these years, the U.S. Army conquered and controlled a colonial empire, military staff lived in exotic locales with their families, and soldiers engaged in combat in Cuba and the Pacific. In the twentieth century, the United States entered into alliances to fight the German army in World War I, and then again to meet the challenge of the Axis Powers in World War II. Coffman explains how a managerial revolution in the early 1900s provided the organizational framework and educational foundation for change, and how the combination of inspired leadership, technological advances, and a supportive society made it successful. In a stirring account of all aspects of garrison life, including race relations, we meet the men and women who helped reconfigure America's frontier army into a modern global force.

Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
