We have seen that want Of practice is not accompanied by any deficiency in noble daring. There is much in the career of Sir Thomas Picton for the young soldier to study with ad vantage. His rise was slow; he encountered many dif ficulties; he was the subject Of a violent persecution, which for a time cast a cloud upon his name and pros peets; by steady perseverance he surmounted Opposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Most Eminent British Military Commanders, Vol. 2 Had the plan proposed by the English general been adopted, French Flanders and Brabant would have become at once the seat of war; but to a measure so hold the states would by no means consent. They had set their hearts upon the reduction of Bonn; and to gratify them, Marlborough gave up with a good grace his own well-matured opinions. By the middle of April, after leaving an adequate force to cover Liege, he was in full march towards the point Of attack; on the 3d Of May the trenches were opened, and on the 1 5th the place was surrendered by Capitulation. All this occurred ere Villeroi could well believe that the allies were in a condition to set even upon the defensive. But no sooner was he made fully aware of his error, than he hastened to retrieve it, by pressing vigorously upon Over. Kill: and the corps which protected Liege. Marlbo rough, however, was not slow in coming to the assistance of his colleague. Without so much as waiting to receive the submission of the governor of Bonn, he contented himself with signing the convention, and hurried back to Maestricht, at a convent in the vicinity of which he fixed, on the 17th, his head-quarters. Grant, Vol. 1 of 2 In preparing these volumes for the public, I have entered upon the task with the sincere desire to avoid doing injustice to any one, whether on the National or Confederate side, other than the un avoidable injustice of not making mention often where special mention is due. There must be many errors of omission in this work, because the subject is too large to be treated of in two volumes in such way as to do justice to all the officers and men en gaged. There were thousands of instances, during the rebellion. Of individual, company, regimental and brigade deeds of heroism which deserve special men tion and are not here alluded to. The troops en gaged in them will have to look to the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of those deeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rough Recollections of Military Service and Society, Vol. 2 of 2 It has been much the fashion to consider General Havelock as simply a stern Puritan soldier. Stern as a disciplinarian he certainly was, Puritan as regards the purity of his motives and actions he undoubtedly was, - but the writer is glad of this opportunity to bear witness to those gentle and unobtrusive social qualities which endeared him SO much to those who knew him intimately, and rendered him so beloved, even by men who had not otherwise much in common with him. His proselytism was that of example, not of talk. He lived the life, there fore his influence was great. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.
