Book Synopsis The SAGE Handbook of Writing Development by : Roger Beard
Download or read book The SAGE Handbook of Writing Development written by Roger Beard and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing development is currently the focus of substantial international debate because it is the aspect of literacy education that has been least responsive to central government and state reforms. Teaching approaches in writing have been slower to change than those in teaching reading and pupil attainment in writing has increased at a much more modest rate than pupil attainment in reading. This handbook critically examines research and theoretical issues that impact on writing development from the early years through to adulthood. It provides those researching or teaching literacy with one of the most academically authoritative and comprehensive works in the field. With expert contributors from across the world, the book represents a detailed and valuable overview of a complex area of study.

Book Synopsis Comprehension of Graphics by : W. Schnotz
Download or read book Comprehension of Graphics written by W. Schnotz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-08-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphic displays such as charts, graphs, diagrams, and maps play in important role today in the design and presentation of instructional materials education. There is also a strong need in scientific, technical and administrative fields to visually present facts, laws, principles etc. The increasing use of computer-based learning environments has also become an important field where the visual presentation of information plays a central role. Despite the importance of graphical displays as a means of communication and the fact that research about learning and cognition has advanced rapidly in the past two decades, the comprehension of graphics is still a rather unexplored area. The comprehension of graphics is not only a stimulating topic in the fields of science and instructional psychology, but also in related disciplines such as semiotics, and artificial intelligence. Research on the comprehension of graphics complements the scientific investigation of cognitive processes in text comprehension, which has contributed much to our understanding of human cognition and learning. Ultimately, a better understanding of the cognitive processes involved in the comprehension of graphics will have an impact not only on cognitive theory, but also on educational practice.
Book Synopsis Translation of Thought to Written Text While Composing by : Michel Fayol
Download or read book Translation of Thought to Written Text While Composing written by Michel Fayol and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation of cognitive representations into written language is one of the most important processes in writing. This volume provides a long-awaited updated overview of the field. The contributors discuss each of the commonly used research methods for studying translation; theorize about the nature of the cognitive and language representations and cognitive/linguistic transformation mechanisms involved in translation during writing; and make the case that translation is a higher-order executive function that is fundamental to the writing process. The book also reviews the application of research to practice -- that is, the translation of the research findings in education and the work-world for individuals who interact with others using written language to communicate ideas. This volume provides a rich resource for student, theorists, and empirical researchers in cognitive psychology, linguistics, and education; and teachers and clinicians who can use the research in their work.
Book Synopsis Cognition in A Digital World by : Herre van Oostendorp
Download or read book Cognition in A Digital World written by Herre van Oostendorp and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive changes are taking place in society surrounding the delivery of information to individuals and the way they process this information. At work, at home, and in schools, the Internet and the World Wide Web are altering the individual's work, his leisure time, her workplace, and their educational environments. All of these changes and their consequences have traditionally been investigated largely within the domain of sociology, semiotics, mass communication, and computer science. The perspective from cognitive psychology has been lacking. The purpose of this volume is to fill this gap. The focus of the book is the cognitive effects of the modern digital environment. In addition, questions are raised about what cognitive conditions must exist for adequately processing information in multimedia environments. Internet use routinely involves the exchange of factual information but also a large amount of information with an interpersonal character is communicated. A socio-psychological perspective is needed to understand both kinds of communication, also to be able to design appropriate support tools. In Cognition in a Digital World, the emphasis is on the psychological analysis of interactive and continuing communication and discourse, rather than on the technical aspects of the individual's interaction at the interface. The three main themes of this volume are: *conditions and consequences of multimedia information processing by the individual; *socio-psychological characteristics of information transfer over the World Wide Web; and *analysis of computer-mediated collaborative communication. Cognition in a Digital World will be of interest to a wide audience of researchers and students in the fields of cognitive science, education, communication sciences, computer science and the arts (discourse analysis).
Book Synopsis Written Documents in the Workplace by : Denis Alamargot
Download or read book Written Documents in the Workplace written by Denis Alamargot and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-01-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided into three parts, the first of which provides a linguistic definition of professional documents, describing their different types and genres. This definition necessarily takes into account both the formal characteristics of these types of document (e.g. nature of linguistic units involved) and their functional goals (the way these linguistic units are used to fulfill the text’s communicative aim). The second part focuses on the mental mechanisms involved in written production in the workplace. One of the aims of a professional writer is to compose a text which can be understood. Text composition involves specific processes and strategies that can be enhanced. One way of doing this is to give the writer suitable instructions, while another is to provide him/her with a suitable writing environment. This last aspect leads us to devote the third and final section to the comprehension of written documents in the workplace. Awareness of the strategies implemented by different readers (with more or less domain expertise) in order to understand technical and professional documents can enhance the latter’s readability. *Contributions from linguists, psychologists and ergonomists from various countries ensure international scope and comprehensiveness *Bridges the gap between fundamental research into writing and reading and the issue of the efficiency of written communication in the workplace *Enables better content creation for professional writers
Book Synopsis Heritage and School Language Literacy Development in Migrant Children by : Raphael Berthele
Download or read book Heritage and School Language Literacy Development in Migrant Children written by Raphael Berthele and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses literacy development in heritage language speakers and presents the results of four different quantitative studies that investigate the transfer of literacy skills in bi- and multilingual language development. The empirical studies focus on different populations of pupils, most of them located in various parts of Switzerland, and emphasise the potential residing in shared or transferred resources between their heritage languages and the languages spoken in the region to which their family has immigrated. The goal of all studies was to gain an understanding of the factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic in nature, that contribute to the development of language skills in both the heritage and school languages. Theoretical assumptions are put to the test via hypothesis testing and the generally shared assumptions on bilingual education are questioned based on the data. Furthermore, methodological problems in the investigation of linguistic interdependence are discussed. This book contributes to the scholarly investigation of potential beneficial effects in academic proficiency across languages in migrant children.
Book Synopsis Lecture à l'université by : Jean-Pascal Simon
Download or read book Lecture à l'université written by Jean-Pascal Simon and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
