Book excerpt: When President Thomas Jefferson dispatched Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their great exploratory expedition of the lands west of the Mississippi, the journey was destined to become the most famous and significant American land expedition in history. Jefferson must have realized the timeless importance of the mission, for he urged the captains to keep multiple records of all they saw and experienced during the journey. Those records, dutifully kept from the departure of the expedition in 1803 to its conclusion in 1806, provided invaluable information about the wonders of the American West. In the next 150 years the journals were published in several versions scrupulously authentic, dubiously revised, and complacently counterfeit. This book is the first comprehensive account of the various versions and of the persons responsible for them. It tells of the dedicated scholarship, inspired judgment, and exciting discovery of new materials, as well as the misguided enthusiasm and journalistic skulduggery that marred the publishing history of the journals, field notes, and letters of members of the expedition. The author breaks new ground in his use of previously unpublished letters written by the editors of the two major editions. An appendix introduces a recently discovered manuscript version of the journal kept by one of the expedition members. The book also includes an appraisal of books and articles written about the expedition and a resume of the illustrative materials, sketches, and maps that enriched the accounts. A History of the Lewis and Clark Journals is thus itself a significant expedition into a historic period in America's past.

Book excerpt: Best known for his short stories, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip van Winkle, Washington Irving was a prolific essayist, biographer, and historian, as well as a member of the American diplomatic staff. The three volumes of his Journals provide detailed accounts of Irving's travels, experiences, and observations, creating an enlightening backdrop to both his literary and historical works. Noteworthy for his descriptions of his travels in Europe, of particular interest is Irving's perspective on 19th century American culture and politics, including his beloved New York, as well as his commentary on the treatment of Native Americans and their culture. vol. 2 of 3

Book excerpt: Pierre Clément de Laussat was the last representative of a foreign power to exercise authority in Louisiana. Appointed colonial prefect by Napoleon Bonaparte, Laussat departed for Louisiana in January 1803 to preside over the formal retrocession of the colony from Spain to France, only to have his mission altered entirely by the Louisiana Purchase on April 30, 1803. These memoirs, covering the period from January 1803 to July 1804, provide a unique firsthand perspective on the momentous transaction that doubled the size of the United States. Laussat pens very personal observations on Louisiana's people and customs, Spanish and American officials with whom he had frequent contact, the local physical environment and economic system, and the formalities involved with the transfer of the colony to the United States. Memoirs of My Life furnishes rare insights into culture, politics, and everyday life in early-nineteenth-century Louisiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **** BCCL3 cites the 4-volume classic (Macmillan, 1952) of which this is an abridgement. Strong, an attorney, reveals much about the practice of law in New York City. He was also a trustee of Columbia University, a vestryman of Trinity Episcopal Church, a close follower of local, state, and national politics, and a lover of music. His diary reflects these interests during the period from 1835 to 1875. In the 1970s, the definitive twelve-volume Danish edition of Andersen's diaries was published. In preparing a one-volume selection of the diaries for an English-speaking audience, Conroy and Rosell (both Scandinavian languages and literature, U. of Washington) have chosen excerpts that show many facets of Andersen's personality and his artistic world. The volume includes an introduction, annotations, and a detailed index, and is illustrated by a selection of Andersen's charming sketches. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Late in 1802 Governor King of New South Wales sent the schooner Cumberland to survey King Island in Bass Strait and Port Phillip to the north of it.The purpose of the survey was to establish whether or not either location might prove a su itable site for a new settlement. The Cumberland 's party included her commander Charles Robbins, the surveyor Charles Grimes, and James Fleming , a gardener. In January and February 1803 Grimes carried out the first complete survey of Port Phillip, during which his party discovered the Yarra River.Fleming, who kept a detailed journal of the survey, later reported that the land around the river offered 'the most eligible place for a settlement', but Grimes' assessment of Port Phillip was not encouraging, and more than 30 years were to pass before Melbourne was established.Fleming's journal of the survey is accompanied by Grimes' field notes and his chart of Port Phillip.
