Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of a Brother The real fact is, that nations, and the families of which rations are composed, make no parade or fuss over that part of their affairs which is going right. National life depends on home life, and foreign critics are inclined to take the chronicles of our Divorce Court as a test by which to judge the standard of our home life, like the old gentleman who always spelt through the police reports to see what the people were about. An acquaintance, however, with any average English neighbourhood, or any dozen English families taken at random, ought to be sufficient to reassure the faint-hearted, and to satisfy them that (to use the good old formula) the Lord has much work yet for this nation to do, and the nation manliness and godliness enough left to do it all, notwithstanding superficial appearances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hugh Memoirs of a Brother Moreover, his family affection was very strong; when he became a Catholic, we all of us felt, including himself, that there might be a certain separation, not of affection, but of occupations and interests; and he himself took very great care to avoid this, with the happy result that we saw him, I truly believe, more often and more intimately than even before. Indeed, my own close companionship with him really began when he came first as a Roman Catholic to Cambridge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brother Sister: A Memoir and the Letters The Memoir of Henriette Renan, which precedes her correspondence with her brother, is the exact reproduction of a pamphlet of which Ernest Renan had a hundred copies printed in September 1862 under the title, "Henriette Renan: A Memorial for those who knew her." In its opening lines the following sentence will attract attention: "These pages are not intended for the general public, and will never be offered to it." In 1883 Ernest Renan thus expressed himself in the Preface to his "Souvenirs d'Enfance et de Jeunesse" - "The person who has had most influence on my life - my sister Henriette - scarcely appears in this work of mine. A year after the death of that beloved being, in September 1862, wrote a little pamphlet, consecrated to her memory, for the benefit of the few who had known her. A hundred copies only were printed. I had to make the garden, milk the cows, bring in wood and churn. Of course there was a lot of fun about it all - more than I knew of at the time. In the winter I hunted rabbits with an old army musket, and brought home so much bunny meat that the whole family went on a strike, and declared I should study my books more and not hunt rabbits quite so much. Greater as their brightness undoubtedly was, the names mentioned above were not the only ones worthy of universal record and remembrance. Around those Chieftains stood, in each of the three countries, a host of writers second only to them in importance, and Often great enough in themselves to have won wider fame, had they not been overshadowed by greatness surpassing their own. Among these a conspicuous place was held by the man whose work hereby for the first time is introduced to the English-speaking world. Such will be found in the lives and writings of the two Brothers here presented: men whose pursuits, though not dazzling to their fellow travellers, were yet connected with the real progress of society, as well as its quiet enjoyments; for we agree with Mr. Carlyle, who says, that man's function is not to taste sweet things, but to do noble and true things. The reader will find the two Wiffens to have been men whose deep and yet wide views, and graceful thoughts, in advance of their generation in their own society, are worthy of permanent record for the future use and pleasure. He had been driven forth by his fierce old grandfather with threats of the most awful nature if he should return without the goat. The tears were not yet dry on Patsy's small face. He had kneaded them in with his knuckles, but the smears caused by the process were not visible in the moonlight, even if there had been any one to see them. It was not only the hardship of being driven out when the meal of hot potatoes was on the table, to search for that ould divil of a goat, and his sense of the injustice which had put the blame of the goat's straying on to his narrow shoulders. The old, in Patsy's knowledge of them, were crabbed and unjust. That was something for the young to take in the day's work. It was Patsy's fears of the supernatural that kept him creeping along in the shadow of the hedge, now and again stopping to weep a little over his troubles, or to listen fearfully like a frightened hare before going on again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Elder Brother, His Biography Living in a neighborhood where he could have access to fourteen hundred thousand books, he discovered that the book world for the most part presents the life of our Lord in Chronological rather than Topical arrangement, and through Expository rather than Devotional treatment. TO meet his own needs, therefore, the Author selected a few hundreds of volumes, and took years enough to study them with great care and then he arranged his notes along the lines indicated in the first ten books Of the Table Of Con tents Of this work, What Jesus Christ is to Me. Hap pily, however, in later reading, more material was found that was already classified under one or another of the topics alluded to. He ought to be, considering the number of paper-bags, labelled "Stewart's Assorted Candies," he consumed per week. Of as little use to say he was a child: there were some children who didn't put newspapers on the strings of their sister's piano, and play it was a banjo. Oh! he would outgrow it, would he? Then, why wasn't he sent away somewhere till he did? Or put into something, and locked up? Or put under somewhere, - a large barrel, for instance, with the head knocked out to give him air, as they do with young tomatoes and pieplants till they arrive at an age when they can come to the table? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Gerald Griffin: By His Brother I have many apologies to offer to the public, for the serious interruptions and delays which the following Memoir met with in its progress through the press. These were principally owing to the pressure of professional avocations, generally of a very distracting character, and so constant in their operation as to give the nature of a task to that which would otherwise have been a pleasing relaxation. The same circumstances have, I Also fear, affected, in no inconsiderable degree, the manner in which the work has been executed, I cannot help thinking there is but little of a brother's partiality in the opinion, that it was a noble subject for one who had the ability to do it justice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir and Letters Rudolf Cecil Hopkinson was born at Holmwood, Wimbledon Common, on July 10th, 1891. He was the sixth and youngest child of his parents. From both of them he had the advantage of unblemished heritage and high example. His father's name is among the great ones of Science. There was no great difference in age among his elder brothers and sisters; but there was a gap of eleven years between him and the one before. His advent, therefore, was a great experience to the rest of the family, particularly to his three sisters, enthusiastic school girls, who lavished observation and devotion on him. Thus he had more than the ordinary share of baby worship. It made little conscious difference to him. He accepted it as part of his daily life. It did not spoil him in the ordinary sense of the word, though it may have increased the old-fashioned, absent-minded tendencies which were his as a child. It also may have developed his very sweet temper and his extreme reasonableness, since he was seldom treated crossly or unreasonably and seldom behaved so. He was quite aware of his importance; yet it was in no spirit of arrogance that, on an occasion in his fourth or fifth year, when a cousin knocked him down, he said gravely, without any anger: "You must not do that; I am too precious." This detached impersonal view of himself was a characteristic which lasted throughout his life. It was exemplified before he won the famous long distance ski-ing race in Switzerland for the "Roberts of Kandahar" challenge cup in 1911.
