Book excerpt: How memetic media—aggregate texts that are collectively created, circulated, and transformed—become a part of public conversations that shape broader cultural debates. Internet memes—digital snippets that can make a joke, make a point, or make a connection—are now a lingua franca of online life. They are collectively created, circulated, and transformed by countless users across vast networks. Most of us have seen the cat playing the piano, Kanye interrupting, Kanye interrupting the cat playing the piano. In The World Made Meme, Ryan Milner argues that memes, and the memetic process, are shaping public conversation. It's hard to imagine a major pop cultural or political moment that doesn't generate a constellation of memetic texts. Memetic media, Milner writes, offer participation by reappropriation, balancing the familiar and the foreign as new iterations intertwine with established ideas. New commentary is crafted by the mediated circulation and transformation of old ideas. Through memetic media, small strands weave together big conversations. Milner considers the formal and social dimensions of memetic media, and outlines five basic logics that structure them: multimodality, reappropriation, resonance, collectivism, and spread. He examines how memetic media both empower and exclude during public conversations, exploring the potential for public voice despite everyday antagonisms. Milner argues that memetic media enable the participation of many voices even in the midst of persistent inequality. This new kind of participatory conversation, he contends, complicates the traditional culture industries. When age-old gatekeepers intertwine with new ways of sharing information, the relationship between collective participation and individual expression becomes ambivalent. For better or worse—and Milner offers examples of both—memetic media have changed the nature of public conversations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of our universe is the greatest mystery of all. How do we find ourselves existing, let alone enveloped in a cosmos enriched with such order and complexity? For religious philosophers, despite the incredible advances of modern physics, we are no closer to a scientific explanation of where the universe came from. 'God', they affirm, 'is the best solution to the mystery.' Yet, there are those who call for patience. The new atheists remind us that science has a habit of explaining what was once unexplainable. In the meantime, we should not delude ourselves into contentment. 'Religion', they say, 'is the opium of the people and the enemy of progress. In fact, God may be the nastiest idea in human history.' This book is a short, engaging and accessible guide to the mystery of existence. Featuring remastered interviews and original essays from the world's most influential and respected thinkers, Philosophers on God explores the most fascinating and innovative research in all of philosophy and science. In doing so, it sheds new light on the nature, purpose and ultimate destination of our universe. Contributors: Susan Blackmore, William Lane Craig, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Daniel J. Hill, Jessica Frazier, Silvia Jonas, Asha Lancaster-Thomas, Stephen Law, Casey Logue, Yujin Nagasawa, Richard Swinburne, Jack Symes, Mohammad Saleh Zarepour.

Book excerpt: Justice Jesters Jesus: Stuck in Yesterday with the God of Yesterday Today and Tomorrow presents a true story of a family undergoing an arduous encounter with the justice system. The author, writing under the nom de plum A.J. Rozalyn, tells the story of Doug Kain and Mindy Morris, a Catholic man and a Methodist woman, who meet, fall in love, conceive a child, reject advice to seek abortion or adoption, and make plans to marry in the Methodist Church. As their lives head down a road that grows bumpier the further they travel, they reach the point, because of concerns about child abuse, where the justice system intervenes. As it narrates this journey, Justice Jesters Jesus offers Scriptures that share consolation and comfort, aiding any who would identify with the familys travails. This encourages trust in God, whose protection extends to all in need, no matter how horrific their circumstances may become. Justice Jesters Jesus: Stuck in Yesterday with the God of Yesterday Today and Tomorrow does not share a story easily told or read. Even so, when one spends time with Doug and Mindy and the others in their lives, one can find strength in trusting that Godwho is the same yesterday today and tomorrowis the God of whom a prophet wrote, For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians say that Jesus Christ had two natures – divine and human. What would that be like? According to Carl Jung, we are all Jesus Christ. Our human part is our ego, the center of our consciousness, while our divine part is our Self, the unconscious center of our entire psyche. With Jesus Christ, both natures – divine and human – were conscious in one person. According to Jung, the problem for humans is that our divine nature is unconscious and our conscious human nature is, for the most part, completely unable to communicate with our inner God. If it could, we would all be Jesus. Instead, the human mind is at war with itself. The part that is truly connected to reality is our unconscious Self, the God inside us. The part that is prone to making up reality – the part that lives in a fantasy world of its own devising – is our conscious human part. For Jung, the ego (consciousness) has to undergo a process called individuation to make proper contact with the Self (the divine unconscious) and thus reach the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Dreams are where our inner God attempts to speak to us, but people are hopeless at interpreting their dreams. The more successful you become at individuation, the better sense you can make of your all-important dreams. If the conscious ego and unconscious Self have a poor relationship, disaster usually follows. Two of the biggest dangers are "inflation" and "alienation". These are currently happening on an epidemic scale and infecting the whole world with madness. The Mind War can end only if the two natures of Jesus – human and God – can at last learn to be on the same page, and understand each other's role. Come inside and find out what has to be done.

Yahweh is a crotchety old deity with a pantheon of family problems. His wife, Frigga, has basically stopped talking to Him, except to nag Him about retiring. His son, Jesus, suffers from crippling depression. Oh, and Jesus' estranged wife is planning a terrorist attack to start a holy war. God is fed up with all the drama. He's perfectly tired and infinitely irritable. Though God doesn't seem to care about human problems, Joe's little, mortal life isn't perfect, either. In fact, it's a comedy as black as God's coffee.

These range from hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to the exotic statistical argument that this reality is a simulation and the ramifications of that from an "operational magick" point of view. In between there are detailed investigations of the effects of electromagnetic fields on the brain, as well as low level direct electrical stimulation in the alteration of consciousness. Modern paranormal, or Psi, effects are detailed with regard to Remote Viewing (and influencing) as well as contemporary seance practices, physical mediumship, aspects of Ultraterrestrial (UFO) and inter-dimensional communications and their relationships to traditional demonology.
