Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of membrane separation technology is presently in a state of rapid growth and innovation. Many different membrane separation processes have been developed during the past half century and new processes are constantly emerging from academic, industrial, and governmental laboratories. While new membrane separation processes are being conceived with remarkable frequency, existing processes are also being constantly improved in order to enhance their economic competitiveness. Significant improvements are currently being made in many aspects of membrane separation technology: in the development of new membrane materials with higher selectivity and/or permeability, in the fabrication methods for high-flux asymmetric or composite membranes, in membrane module construction and in process design. Membrane separation technology is presently being used in an impressive variety of applications and has generated businesses totalling over one billion U.S. dollars annually. The main objective of this book is to present the principles and applications of a variety of membrane separation processes from the unique perspectives of investigators who have made important contributions to their fields. Another objective is to provide the reader with an authoritative resource on various aspects of this rapidly growing technology. The text can be used by someone who wishes to learn about a general area of application as well as by the knowledgeable person seeking more detailed information.

Book excerpt: New Methods and Sensors for Membrane and Cell Volume Research, Volume 88 provides an overview of novel experimental approaches to study both the cell membrane and the under-membrane space – the cytosol, which have lately began drawing renewed attention. The book's overall emphasis is on fluorescent and FRET-based sensors, however, other optical (such as variants of transmission microscopy) and non-optical methods (neutron scattering and mass spectrometry) also have dedicated chapters. This volume provides a rare review of experimental approaches to study intracellular phase transitions, as well as anion channels, membrane tension and dynamics, and other topics of intense current interest. Describes novel FRET-based membrane sensors Reviews selected non-optical approaches to membrane structure and dynamics Describes traditional and modern aspects of cell volume research, such as phase transitions and macromolecular crowding

Book excerpt: Membrane Characterization provides a valuable source of information on how membranes are characterized, an extremely limited field that is confined to only brief descriptions in various technical papers available online. For the first time, readers will be able to understand the importance of membrane characterization, the techniques required, and the fundamental theory behind them. This book focuses on characterization techniques that are normally used for membranes prepared from polymeric, ceramic, and composite materials. Features specific details on many membrane characterization techniques for various membrane materials of industrial and academic interest Contains examples of international best practice techniques for the evaluation of several membrane parameters, including pore size, charge, and fouling Discusses various membrane models more suitable to a specific application Provides examples of ab initio calculations for the design, optimization, and scale-up of processes based on characterization data

Book excerpt: The complex dimensions of the Mediterranean freshwater resources, their fragility and their scarcity have been highlighted and have received considerable attention as a primary priority issue politically, technically and scientifically. Membrane technology, with its different applications in water treatment (desalination, potable water treatment, wastewater treatment and reuse) has showed to be a powerful tool to abate the water crisis in the Mediterranean region. The primary objective of Membrane Technology in Water Treatment in the Mediterranean Region is to support the current research and development activities in membrane technology focused on water treatment in the Mediterranean area, providing an international stage to local research organisations and universities devoted to the development of membrane technologies in the following areas: municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, surface water purification and brackish and sea water treatment for drinking purpose. It covers the identification, mapping and evaluation of the on-going research, in order to propose future research and co-operation strategies. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RichardJ. Winzler died ofa heart attack on September 28, 1972. He was a versatile, internationally renowned biochemist, gifted with bound less energy and a great breadth of view. After early work on respiratory enzymes, he developed a lifelong in te rest in complex carbohydrates and, particularly, glycoproteins. He early recognized the important role of the latter substances in membrane function and developed the now widely accepted model for the structure of major erythrocyte membrane glyco pro teins. He expanded this model to include the possible general roles of membrane glycoproteins in specific membrane functions, particularly cell recognition phenomena. Richard Winzler possessed a broad and critical perception of the ftux of biomedical progress. He thus appreciated very early that general recognition of the complexity of membrane-associated phenomena would foster a new, rapidly expanding, interdisciplinary membrane technology. He also recognized the need for means to bridge the communication barriers inevitably genera ted by such an evolution, and this conviction largely stimulated us to write this book. Membrane technology is a vast field and we cannot treat all its aspects. Instead, we concentrate on those areas that, in our view, have evolved most rapidly. In this, we pay primary but not exclusive attention to the plasma membrane, but where relevant, consider other biomem branes and diverse model systems. Moreover, we focus on animal cells, but include information derived from microbial and artificial membranes where germane.
