Book excerpt: The main objective of this program is to develop a membrane process for the separation of hydrogen sulfide and other impurities (carbon dioxide and water vapor) from low-quality natural gas. The overall program involves development and parametric testing of appropriate membrane materials in the form of thin-film composite membranes. These membranes will then be made on a larger scale and incorporated into modules which will be tested first in the laboratory, and then at different field sites. A technical and economic analysis of the membrane process will then be performed and compared with existing, processes. In Phase I of the program, an extensive experimental study has been performed to assess the performance of our membranes under various feed conditions. Composite membranes made from four different polymers were investigated to determine their hydrogen sulfide/methane and carbon dioxide/methane selectivity. Two polymers were then selected for a further parametric study. Effects of the following variables were studied: the feed compositions of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, the presence of water vapor in the feed gas, and the feed gas temperature. Experiments were performed at pressures in the range 400--1,000 psig. Also as part of the Phase I evaluation, Hoechst Celanese Corporation will perform a complete economic analysis for the removal and recovery of a 1 Ton sulphur/day plant. In Phase II of the program, a bench-scale system will be constructed and long term tests will-be performed. Also, this skid-mounted system will then be field-tested at one or more different field sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osmotically driven membrane processes (ODMPs) including forward osmosis (FO) and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) have attracted increasing attention in fields such as water treatment, desalination, power generation, and life science. In contrast to pressure-driven membrane processes, e.g., reverse osmosis, which typically employs applied high pressure as driving force, ODMPs take advantages of naturally generated osmotic pressure as the sole source of driving force. In light of this, ODMPs possess many advantages over pressure-driven membrane processes. The advantages include low energy consumption, ease of equipment maintenance, low capital investment, high salt rejection, and high water flux. In the past decade, over 300 academic papers on ODMPs have been published in a variety of application fields. The number of such publications is still rapidly growing. The ODMPs' approach, fabrications, recent development and applications in wastewater treatment, power generation, seawater desalination, and gas absorption are presented in this book.

Book excerpt: Objective was to develop a membrane process for separating hydrogen sulfide and other impurities (CO2, water vapor) from low-quality natural gas. A membrane material was identified with very high H2/CH4 selectivity in the range of 40--60; membrane production was scaled up to commercial size rolls; high-pressure membrane and module development and optimization were completed; and a membrane permeation flux of 4 x 106 cm3/s·cm2cmHg, twice as high state-of-the-art cellulose acetate membranes, was achieved.

Book excerpt: Membranes already have important applications in artificial organs, the processing of biotechnological products, food manufacture, waste water treatment, and seawater desalination. Their uses in gaseous mixture separations are, however, far from achieving their full potential. Separation of air components, natural gas dehumidification and sweeting, separation and recovery of CO2 from biogas, and H2 from refinery gases are all examples of current industrial applications. The use of membranes for reducing the greenhouse effect and improving energy efficiency has also been suggested. New process intensification strategies in the petrochemical industry have opened up another growth area for gas separation membrane systems and membrane reactors. This two volume set presents the state-of-the-art in membrane engineering for the separation of gases. It addresses future developments in carbon capture and utilization, H2 production and purification, and O2/N2 separation. Topics covered include the: applications of membrane gas separation in the petrochemical industry; implementation of membrane processes for post-combustion capture; commercial applications of membranes in gas separations; simulation of membrane systems for CO2 capture; design and development of membrane reactors for industrial applications; Pd-based membranes in hydrogen production; modelling and simulation of membrane reactors for hydrogen production and purification; novel hybrid membrane/pressure swing adsorption process for gas separation; molecular dynamics as a new tool for membrane design, and physical aging of membranes for gas separations. Volume 1 focuses predominantly on problems relating to membranes.
