Migrants and minorities respond to these difficulties in multiple ways — as active agents in the pedagogical, political, social, and scientific processes that position them in this or that cultural sphere. On the one hand, they reject ascribed cultural attributes while striving towards integration in a variety of social spheres, e.g. school and workplace, in order to achieve social mobility. On the other hand, they articulate demands for cultural self-determination. This discursive duality is met with suspicion by the majority culture. For societies with high levels of migration or with substantial minority cultures, questions related to the meaning of cultural heterogeneity and the social and cultural limits of learning and communication (e.g. migration education or critical multiculturalism) are very important. It is precisely here where the chances for new beginnings and new trials become of great importance for educational theorizing, which urgently needs to find answers to current questions about individual freedom, community/cultural affiliations, and social and democratic cohesion. However, such research presupposes a definition of dominance, which is far from being settled. This gives rise to considerable differences in the operationalization of the concept across studies. Though a unified story cannot emerge for such a complex subject, interesting new venues are explored including the impact of dominance shift during L1-re-exposure, comparisons of different types of bilingual groups, or operationalization of dominance through experiential measures. They address the processes, potential merits and drawbacks of language spread as well as the marginalization of minority languages, language endangerment and revitalization, contact-induced language change, the emergence of mixed languages, and identity issues. An emphasis is on the dominance of non-Western languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and, particularly, Russian. Ich persönlich bin ebenfalls bilingual erzogen worden, da ich erst mit dem fünften Lebensjahr nach Deutschland gezogen bin und hatte im Kindergarten meinen ersten Kontakt zur deutschen Sprache. In der heutigen Gesellschaft wachsen immer mehr Kinder in einer mehrsprachigen Umgebung auf und erwerben zwei Sprachen von Geburt an oder bald danach. Dafür muss man heute nicht mehr in ein anderes Land ziehen. Es gibt immer mehr staatliche Einrichtungen wie zweisprachige Kindertagesstätten und bilinguale Schulen, die die Mehrsprachigkeit fördern. Auch Mehrsprachige Tagesmütter werden immer beliebter. Dies kann als Vorteil angesehen werden und als Chance für die Kinder, mehr als eine Muttersprache zu erwerben. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es auch heute noch Bedenken, Kinder zwei oder mehr Sprachen ab der Geburt auszusetzen, da sie sie sprachlich, kognitiv und emotional verwirren könnten. Eltern befürchten, dass die Sprachentwicklung ihrer Kinder verzögert werden könnte und dass die Kinder nicht in der Lage sind, ihre beiden Sprachen auseinander zu halten. Die zunehmende sprachliche und psycholinguistische Forschung über die Mehrsprachigkeit in den letzten 20 Jahren hat dazu beigetragen, einige Bedenken zu beseitigen und den Fall der zweisprachigen Kinder zu unterstützen. Um einen Hintergrund für die Diskussion zu schaffen, werde ich den Begriff „Bilingualismus“ bzw. die Mehrsprachigkeit versuchen zu definieren und die unterschiedlichen Formen zu beschreiben. Weiter werde ich auf die simultane - und die sukzessive Mehrsprachigkeit näher eingehen um im Anschluss den Spracherwerb bei Kindern und Erwachsenen zu unterscheiden. Zum Schluss beleuchte ich die Vor- und Nachteile der bilingualen Früherziehung.

Against this background, both early and late bilinguals face an arduous learning task which differs in complexity. Couched within a generative framework, the empirical study focuses on 257 participants with different levels of proficiency in Spanish ranging from low to advanced, and through a series of tests aims to discover which extra-linguistic and intra-linguistic factors act as triggers for non-native outcomes in adult heritage speakers and L2 learners. The observed morphological variability is argued not to stem from a representational (i.e. syntactic) deficit, but rather from a mapping problem in L2 learners and heritage speakers. Successful attainment in terms of gender is possible but dependent on the interplay between various extralinguistic and linguistic factors.

The main innovation of this approach is the focus on the feature composition of lexical items. From this perspective, the loss of past participle agreement in Catalan is analyzed on the basis of newly collected data as a consequence of the grammaticalization of formal features. The emergence of syntactic formal features through grammaticalization is understood as a last-resort repair mechanism for pragmatically costly derivations. Further far-reaching implications of this proposal under discussion are: the interplay between (re-)parametrization, economy, cyclicity, and grammaticalization; the characterization of free variation under a modified version of the Interface Hypothesis; and the precedence of syntactic over morphological change. This book is not only of interest to specialists in Romance languages but also to anyone working on diachronic linguistics.
