Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, American civil society got upended and reordered as many social, cultural, political, and economic institutions were changed forever. Pretty People examines a wide range of Hollywood icons who reflect how stardom in that decade was transformed as the nation itself was signaling significant changes to familiar ideas about gender, race, ethnicity, age, class, sexuality, and nationality. Such actors as Denzel Washington, Andy Garcia, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, and Antonio Banderas became bona fide movie stars who carried major films to amazing box-office success. Five of the decade’s top ten films were opened by three women—Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, and Whoopi Goldberg. “Chick flick” entered the lexicon as Leonardo DiCaprio became the “King of the World,” ushering in the cult of the mega celebrity. Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise defined screen masculinity as stark contrasts between “the regular guy” and “the intense guy” while the roles of Michael Douglas exemplified the endangered “Average White Male.” A fascinating composite portrait of 1990s Hollywood and its stars, this collection marks the changes to stardom and society at century’s end.

Book excerpt: ONLY IN HOLLYWOOD COULD THINGS THIS UNBELIEVABLE HAPPEN As any actor, producer, director, or screenwriter can attest, working in the movie business isn't easy. After Jack Nicholson filmed his first screen test for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, studio mogul Louis B. Mayer politely told him afterwards: "I don't know what we can use you for, but if we ever do need you, we'll need you real bad." In the late 1960s, Paul, John, George, and Ringo–better known as The Beatles–were set to star in a movie version of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings, until Tolkien objected over the loudness of their music. Steven Spielberg snubbed Charlton Heston for the lead role in Jaws believing his "save the day" disaster movie performances would overshadow the movie's real star–the killer shark. In prepping for his role of the psychotic Vietnam veteran-turned cab driver in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, Robert De Niro obtained a New York taxicab driver's license and learned how to drive a cab working 12-hour shifts and picking up passengers for a New York cab company. What does this unbelievable stuff have in common? Scores of these and other tantalizing tidbits and scintillating stories that really happened to famous film stars and in the movies are meticulously detailed in one fun, fact-filled volume, REEL FACTS. This fascinating, full-color copiously illustrated treasury offers an inside the Hollywood grapevine look at it all—classic movie star rejections, remarkable movie ideas that misfired (or the greatest movies never made), amazing extremes actors have undertaken in preparing for film roles, unforeseen calamities that disrupted or delayed movies in production, fantastic film foolery perpetrated in popular movies on audiences, notable casting mishaps, the worst screen kissers, and much more. For avid movie lovers and film buffs alike, this entertaining chronicle shows filmdom's favorite stars and movies in general like you have never seen them before.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking, cross-cultural reference work exploring the diversity of expression found in rituals, festivals, and performances, uncovering acting techniques and practices from around the world. Acting: An International Encyclopedia explores the amazing diversity of dramatic expression found in rituals, festivals, and live and filmed performances. Its hundreds of alphabetically arranged, fully referenced entries offer insights into famous players, writers, and directors, as well as notable stage and film productions from around the world and throughout the history of theater, cinema, and television. The book also includes a surprising array of additional topics, including important venues (from Greek amphitheaters to Broadway and Hollywood), acting schools (the Actor's Studio) and companies (the Royal Shakespeare), performance genres (from religious pageants to puppetry), technical terms of the actor's art, and much more. It is a unique resource for exploring the techniques performers use to captivate their audiences, and how those techniques have evolved to meet the demands of performing through Greek masks and layers of Kabuki makeup, in vast halls or tiny theaters, or for the unforgiving eye of the camera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This current book describes my belief (with input from a great many people) as to how this country got to where it is today, where I fear it is going, and my absolute terror that the American people will elect Hillary in 2008. Why terror at her election? Because that will launch the country toward a totalitarian government. We no longer can believe that our elected officials are patriots. They are more acclimated to power and less concerned about the people and the country's history. The book is a departure from the others. It came to mind when watching a TV discussion group talking about whether Hillary would run for President in 2004. I was terrified that she would run and win. I then thought about it and decided I had some excellent reasons why she would not run in 2004 but would wait until 2008. The book goes into depth concerning the dangers to the Country of electing Hillary. My first three books: There Are No Bad Kids, "Never Underestimate the Arrogance or Stupidity of Government and High On Life were all published by 1st Books Library. The first was written as a result of a traumatic experience in our lives and the second describes what I believe created that trauma. "High On Life" creates a completely different atmosphere. The title came as the result of one of my children becoming hooked on cocaine. I faithfully believe that no one needs a narcotic to get high -- Life is the only high necessary!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why so much pain? Why do so many people pretend to care? It is that preposterous, absurd, irrational and ridiculous, which deception presents; that they really do. Darkness persists because you have not yet been given the power. Sadly to say, over the years it becomes, even more blink. No one has remotely explained this journey to you, and things will get worse before they become better. Frustrated, because you can’t identify with what is actually happening to you. You’re much too young, uneducated and inexperienced to begin to fix it. Looking for guidance and knowledge, by reading books, doesn’t quite cut it.. You escape into theatres, you mix into fashions, and you pretend to know what a man or woman should be and/or should look like. Your last result: SHOUT, “Over Here” I need YOU. Still on a ‘Merry Go Round’ of life, yet you hope for clarity, you long for guidance, your very soul cries out, “O GOD HELP ME”. It took trials of debasing, sorrow and sicknesses for you to see that, “Ye are a chosen generation a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people that ye must show forth the praises of Him, who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” God Himself can transform you into, The Predestined being you were made to become. Jesus, “The Anointed One” is who we strive to be like. He is the expression of POWER, God’s Power; He is The Messiah, our Savior; He is The Propitiator for the whole world. Talk with Him: The High Imperial Majesty, Creator of the Universe, Sea and the Sea beneath, Eternal, Immortal and Invisible God; “Make Him your Fear, make Him your Dread.” Don’t fake it, for when you do, no one will be blessed, especially YOU. Here Gloria is contended with being the outcast of her family. She makes mistakes over and over again. Gloria, just can’t seem to get it together, no matter how many jobs, businesses, apartments, towns, cities, and many friends. When does she escape that ‘Merry Go Round’ ride? “Not until I had gone CLEAN through” For Questions and Bookings Please

Sijan Cates, Hollywood’s biggest star and favorite bad boy, is ordered by his movie studio to stay out of the tabloids. No problem. He heads back to his small, sleepy hometown of Climax, NC, to spend time with his brothers and lie low. It should have been a great plan. Avery Danford, desperate to track down her estranged family to help her sister, squeezes into a dress two sizes too small and photobombs the biggest movie star in the world. While posing as his #1 fan. All to catch her tabloid-loving mother’s attention. It’s a crazy-pants plan. Made crazier by an amazing kiss--caught by the paparazzi. Aaaand... that's how Sijan and Avery end up *fake-engaged*. The new plan is to quietly "break up" when the paparazzi loses interest. A plan that should work... If Sijan doesn’t feel a burning need to give Avery a starring role in his personal life. For real. If Avery doesn’t fall hard and fast and into bed with last year’s World’s Sexiest Man. But you know what they say… The best-laid plans of Hollywood stars and fake fans oft go astray. Which is to say explode in their faces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Reader, When we asked the beloved award-winning comedian and actor Robert Klein to write a book, you can imagine our utter surprise when he told us that he wanted to write about sixth-century Chinese pottery. Thankfully, he hit a creative brick wall (since he doesn't really know anything about pottery from China or anywhere else). Then came similar failures to write books about sea turtles, circumnavigation of the globe, building jet engines at home, the sociology of chickens, or fungi of the skin. Luckily, Mr. Klein's paramount concern was the consumer. He knew that if we, his publishers, were going to boldly ask you to purchase his book (see above for price), he would have to write something so good, so worthwhile, so meaningful as to make you want to send additional money to your bookseller in gratitude for having allowed you to partake in this reading experience. So Mr. Klein set out to write about what he knows best: himself. This book is about the adventures of a child who becomes a young man: how he thinks and dreams and lusts and fears and laughs and handles adversity. From the beginning of his distinguished career as a comedian, Robert Klein established himself as a pioneer in observational humor and razor-sharp routines that are infectiously funny. Now -- for the first time -- Klein brings his trademark humor and honesty to the printed page. In this portrait of a comic as a young man, Klein takes us back to the people and streets of his Bronx neighborhood, the eccentric cast of characters in the Catskills hotels and bungalow colonies where he worked, the college dorms where he received more than an academic education, the 1964 World's Fair where he fell in love, New York City and Chicago in the 1960s as he developed his talent, and Los Angeles just as he was about to embark on a show business career. Throughout, Klein reveals the hilarity of growing up and explores the mysteries and his own foibles in sex and relationships. He recounts with wit and poignancy losing his virginity with a prostitute, bringing home a German girlfriend to his Jewish family, and the amorous adventures of the busboy he once was. With an ego more fragile than Chinese pottery, Robert Klein has written a funny and evocative coming-of-age memoir -- well worth the price (if we say so ourselves). Enjoy. All the best, The Publisher
