Book excerpt: In Ancient Greece, sometimes death is only the beginning… Medusa’s human form, granted by the virgin goddess, has always been enough for her. Until now. No longer a virgin, Medusa now faces banishment from the temple and Athena’s legendary wrath. Perseus’s love for Medusa breeds poison when kept a secret from all who live on Mt. Olympus. To have a life together, the couple must air the truth, even if it shakes the foundation of the Parthenon. Medusa struggles to embrace her monstrous past, as Perseus is faced with a choice – to embrace a hero’s life, or to follow his heart’s desire. The collision of their destinies forces them into a world that neither imagined.

Book excerpt: 'Escapism of a high order.' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 'A slyly intelligent page turner.' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY AN AURELIO ZEN MYSTERY When a group of Austrian cavers in the Italian Alps come across human remains at the bottom of a deep shaft, everyone assumes the death was accidental - until the still unidentified body is stolen from the morgue and the Defence Ministry puts a news blackout on the case. The whole affair has the whiff of political intrigue. That's enough to interest Aurelio Zen's boss at the Interior Ministry, who wants to know who is hiding what from who and why. The search for the truth leads Zen into the murky history of post-war Italy and obscure corners of modern-day society to uncover the truth about a crime that everyone thought was as dead and buried as the victim. 'As the plot quickens, we are soon deep in Dibdin's favourite territory: the murky political conflicts of Italy's past and the oily chicanery of its present.' SUNDAY TIMES 'Dibdin's misanthropic wit finds plenty to play with.' GUARDIAN 'A terrific detective story.' 5* reader review 'Beautifully written . . . You get a real sense of the turbulence in the Italian state during that era.' 5* reader review 'MEDUSA is the best I've read so far, with a complex but pleasing plot.' 5* reader review PRAISE FOR MICHAEL DIBDIN AND THE INSPECTOR ZEN SERIES: 'He wrote with real fire.' IAN RANKIN 'A maestro of crime writing.' SUNDAY TIMES 'One of the genre's finest stylists . . . And Zen himself is a masterly creation: he is anti-heroic and pragmatic but obstinate, cunning and positively burdened with integrity.' GUARDIAN 'Dibdin tells a rollicking good tale that you want both to read fast, because of its gripping storyline, and to linger over, to savour the evocative descriptions of place and mood.' INDEPENDENT 'One of British crime fiction's most distinguished and distinctive voices.' ANDREW TAYLOR 'Dibdin has a gift for shocking the unshockable reader.' Ruth Rendell 'Zen is one of the greatest creations of contemporary crime fiction.' OBSERVER 'I love the way these books capture the atmosphere and contradictions of Italy.' 5* reader review 'Aurelio Zen novels are a great treat.' 5* reader review 'There is no better writer than Dibdin. His books are a joy to read.' 5* reader review 'Love these books . . . I am sure you will get hooked too!' 5* reader review

Lulled there by inconceivable desire, it is a clandestine meeting that will forever alter her fate. Wishing only to capture the love of a god, she instead commits a grievous act of sin against an angry goddess and sets in motion a chain of events that not only tears her world apart, but those that love her as well... In a world ruled by men, and explained by myth, two brave sisters must break the rules and embark on a perilous journey. Divided by difference, yet united by a singular cause, they must go out into a world that is at once cruel and capricious; a world which often views and treats women as being no better than slaves It is a journey that will take them across the width and breadth of ancient Greece. From the highest of mountains, to the deepest of valleys; to the most fabled of lands where myths come to life and futures are told, and finally, to the dark confines of the Underworld itself in search of answers. It is a journey that will see them pitted against unforeseen challenges and dangers, and at times against each other. But as their journey of struggle and discovery unfolds, something unusual begins to take shape, and the question of what happened to their sister is invariably replaced with one of a much deeper meaning How far would you go to save the soul of someone you love?

The author of this work begins by questioning the strategies with which male writers depict powerful women. Although Spenser's Britomart, Shakespeare's Cleopatra, and Milton's Eve figure selfhood very differently and to very different ends, they do have two significant elements in common: mirrors and transformations that diminish the power of the female self.

Book excerpt: This book examines the central role of casuistry - the science of resolving problems of moral choice, known as 'cases of conscience' - in Elizabethan religious, political, and literary culture. In the process, that author develops a theory of casuistical hermeneutics in a synthesis of new historicist and post-structuralist methodologies, a synthesis made intelligible in terms applied within the discourses of ideological and epistemological crisis that late-sixteenth-century casuiatry both addressed and provoked. Casuistry gained unprecedented notoriety in the last two decades of Elizabeth's reign, emerging as an ambiguous practice that continued to be claimed as a heuristic procedure while it also came to function as a locus of moral and epistemological uncertainty. The author shows the equivocal nature of casuistry to be the effect of the inherently dialogic activity of the word 'conscience'. Believed to be a sacred repository of truth as well as a hermeneutic operation, conscience both embodied the culture's received norms and subjected to scrutiny the social and political negotiations that produced and maintained these norms. The author examines the application of casuistry in wide-ranging but interrelated documents: Elizabeth's two speeches to Parliament concerning the fate of Mary, Queen of Scots; representative manuals of casuistry; accounts of the secret movements of the English Catholic mission and Walsingham's intelligence network; the 'Siena Sieve' portrait of Spencer's The Faerie Queene. The author establishes casuistical hermeneutics as a central organizing principle of Spenserian narrative and charts the connection between Spenserian narrative and novelistic discourse (in Bakhtin's sense of the term). These documents yield new insights into the politics of ambiguity and misreading in the Elizabethan period, variously exploiting the casuistical doctrines of equivocation, 'honest dissimulation', and mental reservation, as well as what the author calls the rhetoric of inviolability, which was associated with the voice of conscience and appropriated by monarch and dissidents alike. That rhetoric depended on a politic self-censorship that proved indispensable to the maintenance of the culture's norms, producing narrative structures that represent scandalous - and theoretically unrepresentable - insights. Reading the text of casuistry in the Renaissance illumines the pivotal, complementary processes of reading and writing the texts through which Elizabethan culture defined itself - its texts of power, its hierarchy of values and norms, its taboos, and its tacit or naturalized protocol for determining canonical texts and 'good' readings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are You Ready to Read the Best Pandemic Science-Fiction Novel of the World? Could there be an important secret that has been hidden for thousands of years in the symbol of the snake climbing the tree, which is the symbol of medicine? Can the source of diseases be the Devil? Could it be a coincidence that the snake figure in the scriptures is also a symbol of Devil? Moreover, could this most evil creature of all ages have been hiding underground, somewhere in the world, using the name of a mythological being the snake-headed 'Medusa'? Moreover, could Hell have actually been there as well? Yes, in fact, everything on Earth began with the first beginning of humanity; with the story of Devil setting him up, that is, being expelled from Heaven. However, everything in our story began at the end of the 1980s, when a group of German scientists digging underground in the depths of the Bavarian forests in southern Germany heard some strange sounds and screams coming from underground. As a result of many years of excavation and drilling, they discovered a tunnel extending thousands of kilometers underground. This tunnel was actually a gate to Hell and Devil. Upon hearing and recording these horrible sounds, they were frightened, and after a while the project was left unfinished. In the early 2020s, a health organization with the world's most secret and evil power, under the leadership of a horrible evil man, Dr. Cornelli, nicknamed 'Frankenstein', in order to reach the source of this sound and communicate with it, he continued this project, which was left unfinished after 40 years, and started a big project called 'Medusa'. This horrible person, who also introduces himself as the 'White Angel of Death', has been secretly managing this project for years in order to develop new species and viruses that will destroy life and humanity on earth through genetic studies by conducting animal experiments among various species in a laboratory. On top of that, his only purpose now is to follow the orders of this Devil that lives underground. By the 2040s, there is no scientific explanation for the cause of rapidly spreading virus outbreaks all over the world. Billions of people are in quarantine, and many have died in these epidemics. Moreover, a series of murders and assassinations, especially involving medical doctors and professors, began at that time. Everyone connected with Herbert Johnson, a professor of History and Mythology who is trying to uncover the truth of the virus, begins to be killed by a horrible chain of assassinations. Prof. Herbert Johnson and everyone he wants to help fight this evil are now waiting for death as a victim in the goal of this evil force, along with billions of people fighting in the grip of the virus. In contrast, the American Archaeologist John Smith and his Russian friend, Professor of Archaeology, Prof. Gregory Kravnik is the only one who can stop them, albeit at the cost of their lives, and for this they have to fight with them. Moreover, if they cannot stop them and this unseen evil force, now their own lives are in danger along with billions of others. The only way to stop this impending Apocalypse is to find a lost statue of Medusa, the location of which no one knows, located at the entrance to the tunnel leading to this underground hell. Because a secret gate inside this statue of Medusa is the beginning of a long and difficult path towards Devil, the source of all these evils and diseases. The Medusa Code will drag you to one of the 7 gates of Hell in the underground. Are You Ready Gate to Hell?
