Book excerpt: The drive toward Cape Girardeau had been through unfamiliar country; and as the late afternoon light grew golden and half-dreamlike I realized that I must have directions if I expected to reach the town before night. I did not care to be wandering about these bleak southern Missouri lowlands after dark, for roads were poor and the November cold rather formidable in an open roadster. Black clouds, too, were massing on the horizon; so I looked about among the long, grey and blue shadows that streaked the flat, brownish fields, hoping to glimpse some house where I might get the needed information.

He comes across a rundown plantation house and finds the only inhabitant is an emaciated old man called Antoine de Russy. The narrator asks if he can spend the night in the house: the old man agrees and begins to tell the tale of the place. He explains that he inherited the estate from his grandfather and married in 1885. He had a son Dennis who, as a young man, was sent to the Sorbonne in Paris. There Dennis met an artist, Frank Marsh from New Orleans, and the two men became involved in a mystical cult. Dennis became infatuated with the head of the cult, a woman called Marceline and married her. Around 1916 Dennis returned to Missouri with his new wife, but Antoine and his servants found her strangely repulsive.

An old man answers his knock and introduces himself as Antoine de Russy. De Russy suffers from spinal neuritis and hasn't been able to keep up the place; he must stay on, however, to guard--something. A storm's coming, so narrator asks Antoine to house him overnight. Antoine's surprised, as locals won't even visit Riverside now. He leads narrator to a sitting room, less shabby than the rest of the house. Our adventurous narrator's wish to plumb the de Russy mysteries is soon satisfied, for Antoine seems eager to tell his story.

Book excerpt: “Chasing Bright Medusas should appeal to anyone — novice or expert — ready to explore Cather’s life and work in the company of a critic so alert to the shimmering subtlety of her style and the hard years of effort that went into crystallizing it.” —The Washington Post A tender biography of one of the greatest authors of the twentieth century and an elegant exploration of artistic endurance, as told by a lifelong lover of Willa Cather’s work The story of Willa Cather is defined by a lifetime of determination, struggle, and gradual emergence. Some show their full powers early, yet Cather was the opposite—she took her time and transformed herself by stages. The writer who leapt to the forefront of American letters with O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918) was already well into middle age. Through years of provincial journalism in Nebraska, brief spells of teaching, and editorial work on magazines, she persevered in pursuit of the ultimate goal—literary immortality. Unlike Hemingway, Faulkner, and Fitzgerald, her idealism was unironic, and she stood alone among the great modern authors—at odds with the fashionable attitudes of her time. Combining intricate analysis with an empathetic, lyrical voice, Benjamin Taylor uncovers the reality of Cather’s artistic development, from modest beginnings to the triumphs of her mature years. His book is simultaneously an homage to her character, a warm consideration of her work, and a case being made to read Cather with renewed vigor.

Book excerpt: Twelve stories, fraught with an unapologetic voice of firsthand experience, that pry the lock off of the addiction, fanaticism, violence, and fear of characters whose lives are mired in the darkness of isolation and the horror and the hilarity of the mundane. This is the Deep South: the dark territory of brine, pine, gravel, and red clay, where pavement still fears to tread. Contains interior illustrations by Ryan Murray and Patrick Traylor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Schuler Benson writes like the spawn of Chuck Palahniuk and Barry Hannah. While approaching his subjects with empathy, humor, and a keen eye for detail, he creates a world of snake-charming preachers, meth heads, and spurned lovers. This collection will make you laugh, make you anxious, and keep you turning the pages. Read this damn book." -Kody Ford, The Idle Class Magazine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "A Breece D'J Pancake of the plains, Benson writes with a hell of a knack for dialect. His characters are dirty, flawed, and all-too familiar. There are no heroes here. Yet in these stories, Benson manages to lift his people to another plane; someplace where they might achieve a little redemption." -Eric Shonkwiler, author of Above All Men ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Schuler Benson has a playwright's ear for dialogue, a poet's eye for scene, and a comic's sense for when the sane is actually crazy, the crazy actually sane. The Poor Man's Guide to an Affordable, Painless Suicide announces Benson's place in the tradition of Wells Tower, Barry Hannah, and Mark Twain: here comes another great documentarian of the agonized and hilarious souls who inhabit Rural America." -Brian Ted Jones, Electric Literature ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Find out more about Alternating Current Press at http://www.press.alternatingcurrentarts.com.

Book excerpt: Renowned philosopher and cultural theorist Kristeva (Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection) offers an extended consideration of artistic figurations of the severed head, the organizing theme to an exhibition she coordinated at the Louvre in 1998. Though she follows a single historical trajectory, moving from Paleolithic skull cults to antique Greek sculpture to the Surrealist drawings, Kristeva eschews the disciplinary constraints of art history, instead employing psychoanalysis to explore the intertwined problems of representation and mortality posed by the severed head. For Kristeva, the capacity to figure the life of the mind first requires a confrontation with this horrific object that stands at the boundary between life and death, registering not only the loss of corporeal form but also subjective interiority. Though this book does not engage with recent images of decapitation, it is not without contemporary political-cultural import; for Kristeva, these cruel artistic figurations offer us the capacity to contemplate the sacred within a technology-driven contemporary visual culture. Verdict While a challenging text, this beautifully written and richly layered meditation on mortality and representation will undoubtedly appeal to those readers interested in semiotic and psychoanalytically informed readings of art.-Jonathan Patkowski, CUNY Graduate Ctr.(c) Copyright 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In researching his biography, Lovecraft, L. Sprague de Camp unearthed and read a number of non-fiction writings by the late horror writer, Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Some of these had been published in Rhode Island newspapers as early as 1906 when Lovecraft was still in high school. Editor de Camp has divided To Quebec and the Stars into four sections: Science, Philosophy, Literature and Esthetics, and Travel, Description, and History. Much of the material included is of substantial value to Lovecraftians and is most revealing of this strange and unfathomable writer of horror tales. Included is "Description of the Town of Quebeck", the longest thing that Lovecraft ever wrote.
