Book Synopsis Ahab's Rolling Sea by : Richard J. King
Download or read book Ahab's Rolling Sea written by Richard J. King and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick is beloved as one of the most profound and enduring works of American fiction, we rarely consider it a work of nature writing—or even a novel of the sea. Yet Pulitzer Prize–winning author Annie Dillard avers Moby-Dick is the “best book ever written about nature,” and nearly the entirety of the story is set on the waves, with scarcely a whiff of land. In fact, Ishmael’s sea yarn is in conversation with the nature writing of Emerson and Thoreau, and Melville himself did much more than live for a year in a cabin beside a pond. He set sail: to the far remote Pacific Ocean, spending more than three years at sea before writing his masterpiece in 1851. A revelation for Moby-Dick devotees and neophytes alike, Ahab’s Rolling Sea is a chronological journey through the natural history of Melville’s novel. From white whales to whale intelligence, giant squids, barnacles, albatross, and sharks, Richard J. King examines what Melville knew from his own experiences and the sources available to a reader in the mid-1800s, exploring how and why Melville might have twisted what was known to serve his fiction. King then climbs to the crow’s nest, setting Melville in the context of the American perception of the ocean in 1851—at the very start of the Industrial Revolution and just before the publication of On the Origin of Species. King compares Ahab’s and Ishmael’s worldviews to how we see the ocean today: an expanse still immortal and sublime, but also in crisis. And although the concept of stewardship of the sea would have been entirely foreign, if not absurd, to Melville, King argues that Melville’s narrator Ishmael reveals his own tendencies toward what we would now call environmentalism. Featuring a coffer of illustrations and an array of interviews with contemporary scientists, fishers, and whale watch operators, Ahab’s Rolling Sea offers new insight not only into a cherished masterwork and its author but also into our evolving relationship with the briny deep—from whale hunters to climate refugees.

Book Synopsis Trying Leviathan by : D. Graham Burnett
Download or read book Trying Leviathan written by D. Graham Burnett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-04 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Moby-Dick, Ishmael declares, "Be it known that, waiving all argument, I take the good old fashioned ground that a whale is a fish, and call upon holy Jonah to back me." Few readers today know just how much argument Ishmael is waiving aside. In fact, Melville's antihero here takes sides in one of the great controversies of the early nineteenth century--one that ultimately had to be resolved in the courts of New York City. In Trying Leviathan, D. Graham Burnett recovers the strange story of Maurice v. Judd, an 1818 trial that pitted the new sciences of taxonomy against the then-popular--and biblically sanctioned--view that the whale was a fish. The immediate dispute was mundane: whether whale oil was fish oil and therefore subject to state inspection. But the trial fueled a sensational public debate in which nothing less than the order of nature--and how we know it--was at stake. Burnett vividly recreates the trial, during which a parade of experts--pea-coated whalemen, pompous philosophers, Jacobin lawyers--took the witness stand, brandishing books, drawings, and anatomical reports, and telling tall tales from whaling voyages. Falling in the middle of the century between Linnaeus and Darwin, the trial dramatized a revolutionary period that saw radical transformations in the understanding of the natural world. Out went comfortable biblical categories, and in came new sorting methods based on the minutiae of interior anatomy--and louche details about the sexual behaviors of God's creatures. When leviathan breached in New York in 1818, this strange beast churned both the natural and social orders--and not everyone would survive.

Download or read book Ufo Sightings: Paranormal Ufo Sighting Cases That Still Mystify Non-believers (The History of Accounts of Unidentified Flying Objects From Antiquity to the 20th Century) written by Steven Richardson and published by Steven Richardson. This book was released on 101-01-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ufo sightings have been the topic of debate for over 200 years.these are well documented events and their findings. But are they real? You decide. The evidence presented within this book will show a clear, unbiased description of these events and what some people believe to be the most realistic evidence of another life, another world. It’s this disregard for our human understanding of the laws of nature that gives them an otherworldly, almost supernatural quality. It’s not hard to imagine why so many people worldwide believe these ufos to be alien spacecrafts—how else would one explain their ability to perform maneuvers that no human vehicle or pilot could ever dream of doing? That doesn’t stop experts from forming their educated guesses, however. A wide range of explanations are proposed to explain away these flying phenomena whenever they appear. Weather balloons. Ball lightning. Optical illusions. Malfunctions of radar and cameras. Much has been said about the possibility of alien life, but very little has been proven. The subject remains one of the most talked-about, yet enigmatic subjects in the modern world. Do aliens exist? Have they been to earth? Is there any way to get to the bottom of this riddle?
