Book excerpt: To celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan Order, Franciscan scholar and historian Dominic Monti tells us the beautiful and inspirational story of Francis of Assisi and his followers—the Order of Friars Minor, or the Lesser Brothers—from its beginnings to current times. This history emphasizes not only the medieval developments of the world's most beloved band of men but also the internal evolution and mission efforts of the friars during the modern period, from the sixteenth century to the present. Monti gives particular emphasis to the history of the order in the English-speaking world: first England and Ireland and then North America and the twentieth-century expansion of the order to other English-speaking countries. Chapter topics include: medieval Christian society; the First Lesser Brothers; expansion and transformation of the Order; the Franciscan mission; internal crisis in the Order; Observants and Conventuals; friars during the Reformation and Baroque Eras; mission to the world; the challenges of modernity; Franciscans in the United States, Canada and Australia; rebuilding the Order in Europe; and recovering a charism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the enduring ironies of medieval history is the fact that a group of Italian lay penitents, begging in sackcloths, led by a man who called himself simple and ignorant, turned in a short time into a very popular and respectable order, featuring cardinals and university professors among its ranks. Within a century of its foundation, the Order of Friars Minor could claim hundreds of permanent houses, schools, and libraries across Europe; indeed, alongside the Dominicans, they attracted the best minds and produced many outstanding scholars who were at the forefront of Western philosophical and religious thought. In The Poor and the Perfect, Neslihan Şenocak provides a grand narrative of this fascinating story in which the quintessential Franciscan virtue of simplicity gradually lost its place to learning, while studying came to be considered an integral part of evangelical perfection. Not surprisingly, turmoil accompanied this rise of learning in Francis's order. Şenocak shows how a constant emphasis on humility was unable to prevent the creation within the Order of a culture that increasingly saw education as a means to acquire prestige and domination. The damage to the diversity and equality among the early Franciscan community proved to be irreparable. But the consequences of this transformation went far beyond the Order: it contributed to a paradigm shift in the relationship between the clergy and the schools and eventually led to the association of learning with sanctity in the medieval world. As Şenocak demonstrates, this episode of Franciscan history is a microhistory of the rise of learning in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franciscan Story is varied and engrossing work which spans more than eight centuries. Beginning with St Francis, Maurice Carmody examines: . How the first Order grew rapidly after the time of St Francis (1182-1226), and how a simple brotherhood became an organised religious order which spread throughout Europe and beyond to implement papal policy in Church reform, missions, higher education and diplomacy. . How disagreements over whether Francis would have approved led to division and, from the sixteenth century onwards, how new orders formed - Conventual, Observant and Capuchin Franciscans as well as Riformati, Recollects and Alcantarines. . How women of the second Order, founded by Clare of Assisi (1194-1253) and her friend St Francis, have adapted and shared Franciscan ideals in a monastic setting since the thirteenth century. . How the third Order, which comprised laity and vowed religious men and women living in community, embraced the same values - a simple lifestyle, respect for creation and peaceful living - in ways that often profoundly influenced the society in which they lived. The Franciscan Story is an in-depth and deeply researched account of a religious movement that has influenced both Church and society in many countries since St Francis, il poverello, began it eight hundred years ago.
