During the Safavid-Mughal periods hospitals were still tied to Avicennian medicine. However, in Qajar Iran and British India hospitals became important instruments for the spread of modern Western medicine. The papers in this volume present a significant panorama on the history of medicine and medical institutions in Iran and India during the early modern and the modern periods. The portrait that emerges is not homogeneous, but instead shows ambivalent and contrasting images. Hospitals can be seen as powerful symbols of the Muslim scientific civilization and then of modern medicine, nevertheless, they remained institutions relegated to the fringes of society – regarded with suspicion and usually reserved for the poor. With this book, renowned scholar Willem Floor, who has written more than fifty books on Iran's history and culture, corrects this lacuna. He details the development of the education of modern physicians starting in the 1850s. And highlights the important and influential role of American physicians in helping shape the culture of Iranian hospital care, including making it acceptable to Iranian patients. American missionary hospitals played a crucial role through the founding of the first medical school in 1885 in Urumiyeh. There were also two other medical training programs at American hospitals in Hamadan and Tehran. By 1930, most Iranian physicians trained in Western medicine had been educated either at the American University of Beirut, medical schools attached to American missionary hospitals, or in Europe. In 1915, American physicians also began the first school to train nurses. Later, in 1936, the government of Iran asked American missionary nurses to direct and run the five government schools for nurses. American and British physicians were the first to establish a rigorous ob-gyn program with pre- and post-natal care, including baby clinics to combat the high child mortality rate in Iran. This model was later adopted by all Iranian hospitals. American physicians also introduced the X-ray machine, the hospital laboratory, and other techniques to enhance medical diagnosis and treatment. All these were established through an environment of cooperation, collegiality, and professional cooperation with their Iranian colleagues through seminars, and the creation of medical societies in Mashhad and Tehran. The final chapter tells the history of leprosy in Iran, and the establishment and functioning of the first leprosarium in Mashhad by American missionary physicians in collaboration with the Imam Reza Shrine Foundation. This book will reward those interested in the development of modern medicine in Iran and the role of women in its health care system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although in the last few years the study of painting in 19th century Iran has made considerable progress it still remains somewhat tradition bound. It would seem that art historians find it difficult to go beyond oil paintings, lacquer, and enamel. In 1998, Robinson, the doyen of Qajar art history, wrote: "Qajar painting found its most prestigious outlets in oil painting, lacquer, and enamel." In this study it is shown that paintings were probably the most important form of expression for painters for many centuries and as prestigious as the other forms of painting. Mural paintings were very popular and were to be found on various types of buildings ranging from the royal palaces, private homes, bath-houses to a religious shrine. Painting was a craft and a business that was actively pursued by artisans in most major towns in response to a general demand for-figurative art. As to the themes depicted these remained basically limited to (i) dynastic and epic (Qajar 'family portraits'; battles, hunts; Shahnameh scenes), (ii) sensual (flora, fauna, erotic), and (iii) religious (prophets, lmams, 'olama) subjects. These subjects occurred in any type of building irrespective of its function. The wide use of figurative representation in religious buildings and practice is of great interest. People almost invariably assume that Moslems until recent times did not tolerate paintings and the like of humans and animals adorning public and private buildings and publications. This study shows otherwise. There is even evidence of the use of paintings as religious icons, which is a totally neglected subject. Rock reliefs and other forms of sculptured works in and on buildings and its accessories such as doors show a similar development as mural paintings. Although information is even less copious than for wall paintings, it is clear that the depiction of living beings in the forms of sculptures was very widespread and pre-dates the Qajar period. The nature and form of murals were influenced by the increased contacts between Persia/Iran and the outside world, in particular Europe and India. This holds in particular for the use of prints and the occurrence of European scenes in frescos and other forms of paintings. Willem Floor has written extensively on many aspects of social, economic, and art history of Iran.

Khwarizmi developed the Arabic numerals, based on the Hindu numeral system and Indian mathematics. The Western world adopted his numeral system. The term "algorithm" is the invention of Khwarizmi. Algorithm defines the steps for calculation for the solution of a problem. Razi was born in the city of Rye in Iran in the year 854 C.E. He went to Baghdad and studied medicine and invented the science of chemistry that resulted in the invention of Alkohol. Razi became a well-known physician and chemist who invented Alkohal. Abu Rayhan Bironi was born in 973 C.E in the Khwarazm region of Khorasan during Samanid empire. The Samanid resurrected the Persian language and made it the official court language in Iran. Rudekhy is the first Persian poet during this era. Samanid established centers of learning in Bukhara, Samarkand, and Nishapour. Ibn Sina was born 980 C.E and was educated in Bukhara. He is known as a prince of modern medicine. Also during the Ghaznavid rule, Ferdowsi wrote his masterpiece," The Book of Kings." The zenith of the golden age of Iranian contribution to knowledge was during Seljuk Empire (1037-1194) with Khayyam, mathematician, and astronomer who designed the Persian Solar calendar. After devastation by Genghis Khan, the age of science and medicine ended in Iran.
