Book excerpt: Medical Musings is a thought-provoking collection of writings which considers a wide range of critical issues facing medical doctors - and their clients. Robert T Sataloff, a prolific author, professional singer, and a leader in his field, considers a wide range of critical themes - from politics and the need for doctors' involvement, through education, employment, and clinical practice issues, to medical insurance. In his own words, the book is intended to 'provide perspectives on education, publication, healthcare delivery, and other topics relevant to leadership in medicine, and more importantly to inspire thought and provoke debate'. This is not just a book for MDs; every one of us is, or will be affected by the issues addressed here, whether politician, educator, journalist, lobbyist, insurer, or healthcare consumer.

Book excerpt: Musings on Medicine, Myth, and History: India's Legacy is a collection of fourteen short essays. It presents a holistic view of ancient medical history and Indian developments in ophthalmology, the authors' medical specialty. Deep respect for their homeland is apparent, as is their concern for sighted and visually impaired patients at home in the United States or on service trips abroad. Readers may be surprised to learn that cataract surgery was first described and performed in India nearly three thousand years ago. Much of current practice in ophthalmology can be traced to medical pioneers in Ancient India. This book is sure to broaden your perspective of India's contributions to modern health care. But also, in the process, you will become better acquainted with many other aspects of India, which was once the world's leading economic "superpower."

Book excerpt: I had always believed in the healing power of our Lord, and viewed my life as one of service to Him via the practice of medicine. But, in retrospect, I had a deeper trust in the power of modern medicine and science than I did in Jesus Christ and His fully accomplished work on the Cross. My thinking was flawed, but, as I grew in my walk with the Lord and meditated on Scripture more fully, I began to see the superiority of faith over the limited interventions modern medical science had to offer, and that this interplay between faith and science was not mutually exclusive, but complimentary, for the spiritual aspects of our lives illuminate and empower the carnal aspects of intellect and physical senses. I began jotting notes to myself related to this interplay of faith and healing and science, and just filed them away...for years. IThen, in December of 2017, a baby was born to a first time mother of mine, his little body riddled with the most fulminant form of acute lymphoblasic leukemia, almost always fatal. His absolutely miraculous healing was the impetus to start putting these thoughts into writing, in the form of weekday morning emails entitled “A Christian Doctor’s View of Healing, Faiith, and Science”. It was soon made clear to me that these writings were to take the form of a year long devotional book, comprised of short weekday messages that are intimately linked, such that they can be read through as a book. And that book was to paint a picture, and that picture was to be of a face, and the face was to be that of Jesus, for He is the source of all healing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-part collection of poems chronicles a tumultuous and intense phase in my life. Dashed into the throes of life its ecstasies and its agonies and a close witness (in my work as a medical doctor) to the human condition, I found solace in expressing the restless inferno raging within my psyche. The poems were written as they arrived, sometimes after ward-rounds and frequently on public transport. Occasionally, they would arrive in the shower, forcing me to leap out and rapidly pen whatever words did flash upon that inward eye, before they vanished into nothingness. I wrote on inspiration and the objects of my reflection always proved a most wonderful muse.

Book excerpt: With thirty-five years of clinical experience as a Canadian family physician and a master's degree in bioethics, Barry explores the practice of medicine like a scientist studying a new-found species: Homo sapiens. Using countless anonymized clinical stories, he leads the reader through an exploration not only of the health care system but the human condition as well. Going right back to the big bang, he takes the reader on a search for how we got here, who we are now and where we might be heading as human beings attempting to care for one another in a complex world. Be warned: Barry breaks down a lot of barriers in his investigation of what makes us tick. Expect to be surprised, entertained, and challenged. And be prepared for outside-the-box thinking, where nothing is out of bounds, not even death. All profits of this book are being donated to individuals needing financial assistance to attend addiction rehabilitation facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurolaryngology brings together in one volume the latest concepts in this important and developing field. In order to make this text as useful as possible for clinicians, selected chapters on general concepts important to clinical care have been included, including chapters on history, physical examination, clinical voice laboratory assessment, common diagnoses and treatments, and other topics important to all voice patients, including those with neurolaryngological complaints. Starting with a perspective on modern voice medicine, including neurolaryngology and a brief historical overview of the development of laryngology, the text goes on to describe neuroanatomy and physiology, laryngeal function, and the role of chaos in voice disorders. It contains fascinating new ideas on applications of nonlinear dynamics to voice care and research, a topic of great relevance in neurolaryngology. Beginning the section on clinical assessment of voice disorders is a description of the current approach to history and physical examination recommended for patients with neurolaryngological voice disorders. The text contains the most current research and references throughout, presenting the latest information about many conditions, including some rarely covered in the laryngologic literature; it highlights diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of motor and sensory disorders that may impair voice. The interdisciplinary expertise of numerous authors has been invaluable in the preparation of this text; however, every effort has been made to maintain style and continuity throughout. Clinically relevant and thought provoking, Neurolaryngology is the definitive encyclopedic reference in this new subspecialty of laryngology.

Book excerpt: Eve Shapiro has been writing about patient-centered care, physician–patient communication, and relationships between doctors and their patients since 2007. In Joy in Medicine? What 100 Healthcare Professionals Have to Say about Job Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction, Burnout, and Joy, Eve turns her attention to those on the healthcare delivery side of this "sacred interaction." These healthcare professionals share their enthusiasm, joys, frustrations, disappointments, insights, advice, stories, fears, and pain, explaining how it looks and feels to work in healthcare today no matter who you are, where you work, or what your position is in the organizational hierarchy. The healthcare professionals who provide patient care deserve our collective interest in their humanity. Without some insight into who they are and the forces with which they struggle every day, we cannot fully appreciate the obstacles to providing the care we all want for ourselves and our families during the best of times, let alone in the uncertain times that lie ahead.

Book excerpt: How did menopause change from being a natural (and often welcome) end to a woman's childbearing years to a deficiency disease in need of medical and pharmacological intervention? By examining the history of menopause over the course of the twentieth century, Houck shows how the experience and representation of menopause has been profoundly influenced by biomedical developments and by changing roles for women and the changing definition of womanhood.
